Around half of Novosibirsk’s farmland is used for grain, potato and vegetable growing. For a number of years now, government investments have mainly focused on constructing new and modernising existing lifestock farms and farm machinery for plant production. For location-related reasons, the government is mainly subsidising the dairy and meat industries, the goal being to increase the region’s cattle herds to 300,000 heads by 2020, so as to allow for the production of 40,000 tons of meat annually. The government has also instituted subsidy programmes for regional farmers that allow for the purchase of machinery and supplies and enable these farmers to obtain loans to farm fallow land. The Exhibition AgroExpoSiberia is the most important international agricultural trade show east of the Urals. Germany has participated in the event since 2012 via a joint stand, and in 2013 a French pavilion was added. There are also exhibitors from Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, the US, and elsewhere. The large international attendance in the event reflects the great potential and excellent agricultural outlook for Siberia.
