Im interdisziplinären DFG-geförderten Projekt “Quantitative empirische Untersuchung von Effekten des
Ramadanfastens während der Schwangerschaft auf die Gesundheit des Kindes während verschiedener
Lebensphasen” innerhalb des Forschungsschwerpunktes "Interdisciplinary Public Policy" sind ab sofort, zunächst
befristet für drei Jahre, zwei Promotionsstellen (50% der Arbeitszeit; Tarifgruppe TV
L-E 13) zu besetzen.
Die Stellen sind an der Wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Fakultät, Lehrstuhl für Statistik und Ökonometrie (Leitung:
Prof. Dr. Reyn van Ewijk) in Kooperation mit der Universitätsmedizin angesiedelt. Die Arbeitsgruppe beschäftigt sich
mit interdisziplinärer Forschung, wobei statistische Methoden kombiniert werden mit verschiedenen anderen
Bereichen, z.B. Epidemiologie, Versorgungsforschung und Psychologie. Alle Themen haben einen hohen „real-world

Ziel des Projektes ist die Untersuchung von Effekten des Ramadanfastens während der Schwangerschaft auf die
Gesundheit des Kindes, sowohl als Neugeborenes, als auch als Erwachsener. Das Projekt umfasst im wesentlichen
zwei Bereiche, die auf die beiden Promotionsstellen aufgeteilt werden sollen:
1. Quantitative Analysen großer existierender Datensätze mithilfe statistischer Methoden von langfristigen
Auswirkungen des Ramadanfastens während der Schwangerschaft auf die Gesundheit des Kindes: Fokus auf die
statistische Analyse von vorhandenen Daten (Querschnitt-Datenbanken mit Gesundheits-Informationen einer
großen Anzahl von Muslimen sowie Geburtsregisterdaten).
2. Eine Umfragestudie über Ramadanfasten während der Schwangerschaft unter schwangeren Musliminnen in
Deutschland: Fokus auf die Umfragestudie und statistische Datenanalyse der Umfragedaten, sowie auf
statistische Analysen von Geburtsregisterdaten.
Die Forschung basiert auf medizinischen Theorien und statistischen Analyseverfahren und sollte in
wissenschaftlichen Publikationen im medizinischen / epidemiologischen Bereich resultieren. Von beiden Personen
wird erwartet, wissenschaftliche Publikationen in englischer Sprache zu verfassen sowie eine Promotion
anzustreben.
Ihr Profil:
 Master-Abschluss oder gleichwertiger Abschluss in Epidemiologie, Mathematik, Statistik, Psychologie,
Ökonomie oder in einem anderen quantitativen Bereich
 Interesse an quantitativer Datenanalyse und empirischer Forschung
 Erfahrung mit Statistik-Software (z. B. Stata, R, SAS) und Datenmanagement
 Interesse an interdisziplinärer Forschung über Gesundheitsthemen und an dem speziellen Themengebiet
 Sehr gute Englischkenntnisse in Wort und Schrift

2 doctoral positions at the University of Mainz
In the interdisciplinary project “Quantitative empirical investigation into the effects of Ramadan fasting during
pregnancy on the health of the child throughout its life course”, which is funded by the DFG (German Science
Foundation), we are currently looking for 2 PhD students. This project is part of the University Research Priority
Program "Interdisciplinary Public Policy". The positions are to be filled as soon as possible and are fixed-term for a
period of 3 years. Remuneration will be according to a 50% position under the German TVL-E 13 payment scheme.
The PhD students will work within the faculty of Economics, chair for Statistics & Econometrics (Prof. Dr. Reyn van
Ewijk) in cooperation with the University Medical Center Mainz. The research group has an interdisciplinary
orientation, combining statistical methods with various other disciplines including epidemiology, health services
research and psychology, and focuses on topics with a high “real-world relevance”. For more information regarding

Goal of the project is to investigate what effects Ramadan fasting during pregnancy has on the health of the child,
both when it is a newborn, and when it grows up and becomes an adult. The project consists of two parts, each of
which will be covered by one doctoral position.
1. Quantitative analyses of large existing datasets using statistical methods, on the long-term effects of Ramadan
fasting during pregnancy on the health of the child. The focus is on the statistical analysis of existing data (crosssectional databases with health information on large numbers of Muslims, as well as birth registry data).
2. A survey study on Ramadan fasting during pregnancy among pregnant Muslims in Germany. The focus is on the
survey study and statistical analyses of the survey data, as well as on statistical analysis of birth registry data.
The research is based on medical theories and statistical analyses and should result in scientific publications in the
medical/epidemiological field. Both persons are expected to write scientific publications in English and to pursue a
PhD.
Your profile:
 Master degree or equivalent in epidemiology, mathematics, statistics, psychology, economics, or another
quantitative discipline
 Interest in quantitative data analysis and empirical research
 Experience with statistical software (e.g. Stata, R, SAS) and data management
 Interest in interdisciplinary research on health-related topics, and in the specific topic
 Proficiency in written and spoken English
