Generally speaking, it’s not a particularly good sign when a restaurant advertises Indian, Japanese and Thai cuisine all at the same time. The San-Qi, however, proves that this is not necessarily always the case. The restaurant is as chic as a modern-day express train and despite its not inconsiderable size radiates all the serenity of a temple. Japanese interior design studio Super Potato is responsible for the San-Qi’s open kitchens, sleek lines and an air of contemporary elegance that cannot be found in this elaborated form anywhere else in Mumbai. There’s nothing particularly special about this café. A few tables shielded from the road by a little greenery, wicker chairs, and the kind of lunch menu you might well find in Sydney, too. What’s striking about the Bagel Shop, though, is the large number of very good-looking guests. For some reason all the models, the ad folk and the photographers have made it their favourite meeting spot. Which is quite something, really. It’s all a little bizarre, but the sound is good and somehow the club is far too chic for this kind of hippie music. Everyone is happy and enthusiastic in this cool establishment with its modernist seating areas. The programme features just about everything from indie bands through jazz, electro and folk right up to techno, house and Indian fusion (in this instance Prem Joshua). Excellent meals are served, too. When you have escaped, tired and thirsty, from the narrow lanes of Crawford Market with your arms full of bags containing exotic spices and fruit, the Badshah is just the spot to head for. Duck your head (the ceilings really are extremely low), get inside and enjoy the fun! The two-storey café has become an institution in town and is righteously famous for its delicious desserts.
