Steven Emmanuel (*1982, GB): The Good Life?!
„Als Teil des Projekts „The Good Life?!“ habe ich von dem gelebt,
was die Natur bot. Ich habe weder Gas noch Strom genutzt,
Essen gesammelt, mir Wasser beschafft, einen Schutzraum
gebaut und in dieser Überlebenssituation fast vier Wochen
ausgedauert. Mein Ziel war es, die direkte Umgebung zu nutzen
und zu verstehen, um mir ein nachhaltiges Maß an Autonomie zu
sichern und zu überleben. Die Arbeit war zum Teil Performance,
zum Teil Experiment und Trainingsübung (anstelle eines Katastrophenszenarios) und auf einer anderen Ebene auch ein „cri de
coeur“. Ich habe diese Zeit auf dem Gelände der Zeche Zollverein
verbracht - früher ein wichtiger Ort der Energiegewinnung, heute
UNESCO Weltkulturerbe. Jeden Tag habe ich dort die Ausstellung
„zur Nachahmung empfohlen“ aufgesucht und mittels einer Tafel
Beobachtungen oder Überlegungen zu meinen Erfahrungen
kommuniziert. Diese Tafel wurde zu einer Sammlung meiner Gedanken und Gefühle, die täglich aufs Neue vollständig gelöscht
und überschrieben wurde. Nun, am Ende des Projekts, werde ich
meine Erfahrungen in einem Künstlerbuch verarbeiten.“
“This summer, I lived off the land as part of the project „The
Good Life?!“. During nearly a four week period I lived within
a survival situation without consuming gas or electricity:
foraging, collecting water, building a shelter. Equipped with
a minimum of tools, I had to learn to utilize and understand
my immediate environment to achieve a sustainable level of
autonomy and survival. The work was partly a performance,
partly an experiment, partly a kind of training exercise (in lieu
of a worst-case-scenario situation) and on some levels a cri de
coeur. I did this performance at Zeche Zollverein. In former
times a big coalmine and an important place of energy in the
Ruhrgebiet, today its part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
During this period of living outdoors, I entered the exhibition
space „examples to follow!“ on a daily basis and wrote on a
blackboard. Each day, extemporaneous messages, observations
and reflections related to my experience were communicated
through this blackboard. This space acted as a palimpsest-like
repository for my thoughts and feelings, erased and replenished
on a daily basis throughout. Now, at the end of the project, I‘m
going to publish all the experiences in an artist book.“

Lucas Buschfeld (*1983, D): Die Schönheit der Energie
Die Arbeit „Mendy“ von Lucas Buschfeld ist in ihrem Wesen
Energie, vermittelt das Sublime ihrer Natur und hat einen
sehr poetischen und meditativen Charakter. Sie öffnet dem
Betrachter einen großen Raum sinnlicher Erfahrung für das
Phänomen elektrischer Energie, welche heute nicht mehr als
etwas Magisches wahrgenommen wird, sondern sich allenfalls in der Betrachtung ihrer alltäglichen Nutzung offenbart.
Der Fokus der Arbeit liegt auf ihrer Allgegenwärtigkeit, ihrer
ästhetischen, mystischen, magischen und romantischen
Qualität. Die für VISIT realisierte Installation wurde erstmals
in Bochum und Weimar gezeigt.
Lucas Buschfeld (*1983, Ger): The Beauty of Energy
The work „Mendy“ by Lucas Buschfeld is, in essence, energy,
conveys the sublime of its nature and has a highly poetic and
meditative character. In the eye of the beholder it opens up a large space of sensual experience for the phenomenon of electrical
energy which is no longer perceived as something magical today
but reveals itself at most in its daily use. The focus, however, is
mainly on the sensual experience of its ubiquity, its aesthetic,
mystical, magical and romantic qualities. “Mendy” was finalized
in July 2014 and was on exhibition in Bochum and Weimar.
