“Respecting the path of life.”
Dear Family and Friends,
As we approach the Fourth of July holiday, I found myself reflecting on the symbols of patriotism. The
American flag, bald eagle, and The Pledge of Allegiance are all symbols expressing patriotism for many
individuals.
The seniors, whom reside within Diamond Willow, have a plethora of vivid memories of reciting The
Pledge of Allegiance in their one-room school houses. I am often amazed and humbled as a frail hand
automatically rises to be placed over their heart, while passionately reciting The Pledge of Allegiance.
Even those with memory loss are often capable of reciting this life-long memorized pledge. I have
watched seniors without the physical ability to stand, attempt to rise the moment they hear The Pledge
of Allegiance. Even when the body is no longer physically capable, the mind signals them for the desire
to stand.
Certainly, many of our seniors and/or their family members served in the military. Their service to our
country taught us all the value of freedom. As we gather to watch the beautiful fireworks displays, may
we all pause with a patriotic appreciation for those who defended and are currently defending the freedom of all Americans. It may sound old fashioned, but our aging seniors are counting on us to stand tall
as they have year after hear and proudly recite…
Sincerely,
Natalie Zeleznikar, Vice President of Operations

Did You Know?

Diamond Willow of Proctor opened the first of five homes in 2004 with the Misty Ivy Suite. My grandma Hazel was the first resident admitted for our higher care setting. Now, ten years later, we have cared for over
1,000 seniors through the end of life. We built the home for one grandma, and now have served several
grandmas and grandpas in Alexandria, Baxter, Cloquet, Detroit Lakes, Grand Rapids, Duluth – Lester Park,
Little Falls, Mountain Iron, Park Rapids, as well as Proctor.

Summer Resident/Family picnics have been schedule from June through August in every community.

Our staff appreciation celebrations will be held in August. We celebrate staffs’ years of service in every
community. Ice cream socials will be held to honor staff with service awards.

We would love volunteers in every community. If you know anyone who would like to spend one-on-one
time with seniors visiting, reminiscing, enjoying coffee, spending time on the outdoor patio, singing, etc.
Everyone loves to see someone new, whether it is a family member or community member volunteering.
Please let your RN Executive Director know.
Together, we all make a Difference!

Alzheimer’s Request
Do not ask me to remember,
don’t try to understand.
Let me rest and know you’re with me,
kiss my cheek and hold my hand.
----I’m confused beyond your concept,
I’m sad and sick and lost.
All I know is that I need you,
to be with me at all cost.
----Do not lose your patience with me,
do not scold or curse or cry.
I can’t help the way I’m acting,
I can’t be different though I try.
----Just remember that I need you,
that the best of me is gone.
Please don’t fail to stand beside me,
love me ‘til my life is gone.
