1.5yo ewes hit $123 at Premier ewe sale
REPORT FROM THE RAIL
by
CAITLYN BURLING
BUYERS wouldn’t have
wanted to blink at the
Landmark Corrigin/Wickepin
State Premier ewe and wether
lamb sale, or they would have
risked missing the
opportunity to purchase some
exceptional lines of sheep.
The favourable
combination of good seasonal
conditions and a positive
sheep market had sheep
producers out in droves to
firm up their numbers before
summer.
Red-hot demand and fastpaced competition on every
line of mainly Merino ewes
and wether lambs saw prices
rise across the board, peaking
at $123 in the Corrigin lineup for a line of 276 1.5yo
ewes offered by the Hewett
family, Corrigin.
The combined sale saw the
Landmark team offer a total
of 12,836 Merino and Dohne
ewes, plus 2099 Merino
wether lambs from local
vendors across the Corrigin
and Wickepin areas.
One of the best yardings
seen in years contributed to
the Corrigin sale achieving

at $123 were buyers Landmark Mt Barker agent Charlie Staite (left) and Owen Sounness, Mt Barker. Mr

the slightly higher average for
ewes at $96, while the
Wickepin portion of the sale
offered a top quality ewe
yarding that averaged $94.
The wether lambs were
only available at the Corrigin
sale and achieved an average
of $76, with 81 buyers

registering across the two
towns keen to compete for
this year’s ewes and wether
lambs.
❐ Corrigin
Kicking the proceedings off
for the successful day were
5285 Merino and Dohne ewes
at Corrigin, the majority of
which were 1.5yo Merino
ewes with a few older lines
2.5-5.5yo still attracting solid
values.
It was the fourth line of
276 Merino ewes based on
Claypans bloodlines that
topped both sales at $123.
The line of ewes was
offered by regular vendors
John Hewett and family, Chas
Hewett & Co, Corrigin, and
purchased by Owen
Sounness, RO & AP
Sounness, Mt Barker.
The stand-out line of 1.5yo
July shorn ewes had caught
the attention of Mr Sounness
for their large frames, plain
bodies and clean, white faces,
the ideal combination for this
year’s replacement breeders.
Mr Sounness said he
intended to use the ewes in
his crossbreeding program
and would use Suffolk rams
to produce first cross lambs
and had purchased some
replacements at the sale once
before.

support from the buyers.
In the end it was knocked
down for the sale’s second
top price of $122 after BJ
James & Sons, Hyden, were
willing to go the extra bid to
secure the very even line of
classy ewes.
The line was also based on
Claypans breeding and had
been shorn in July.
Others paying around the
$100 mark for 1.5yo ewes
included T O’Brien, who

Other lines making good

included a draft of 301 MPM

offered by S & E Mills, when
it was knocked down at $98

Richards & Son.
Just falling short of the
Mills’ draft in terms of price
was a line of 187 1.5yo
Karingal blood ewes, when it
was sold at $96.
These ewes, which had
been shorn in September,
were offered by Careema
Farms and purchased by
Mallee Rise Pty Ltd.
There were a number of
other vendors which saw
their lines of 1.5yo ewes sell
for $90 or better.
These included Ranchview

Transport, Mt Barker.
Also making better than
$90 was a draft of 131
maidens, which were offered
by NB & DL Talbot and
purchased by T O’Brien at
$91.
The ewes were based on
Claypans breeding and had
been shorn in July.
Regular sale vendors FL
Abe & Sons, Corrigin, were
once again rewarded when
they received $90.50 for a
line of 165 1.5yo ewes that
had been shorn in July and
were based on Gatepines
West breeding.
The line was purchased by
Wickepin operation Snow &
Co, which recognised the
potential in the youngsters.
There was one line of 148
F2 Dohne ewes in the sale
which was offered in the
1.5yo section.
These were offered by
Rockwell Farms and based
on Chirniminup breeding.
In the end after some
quick-fire bidding the line
was purchased by Mal and
Matt Cunningham, ML &
BM Cunningham, Pingelly,
for $101.
When it came to the older
lines of ewes, top dollar was
paid for a line of 205 2.53.5yo Merino ewes offered
by Colin and Jacinta Holmes,
Coljac Farms, Hyden, after
fellow Hyden farmer BW
James & Sons thought they
were worth the $113.50 price
tag.
The line of proven matrons
were based on Seven Oaks
South breeding and carried a
long jacket after being shorn
in March.
Processor Hillside Meats
bought four of the seven lines
of wether lambs, one of
which was unshorn, totalling
1009 and paying an average
of $74.
But the $87.50 top price
for the section was paid for

saleyards.
❐ Wickepin
When the sale moved to
Wickepin, some fresh faces
joined the crowd but
Landmark auctioneer Mark
Warren didn’t skip a beat,
knocking down all of the
7651 Merino ewes drafted.
Again there was strong
buying support from the
Landmark network, but the
top price of $114.50 was paid
by Conrad Flavel, CT Flavel,
Wickepin, for a beautiful line
of 229 1.5yo ewes.
The August shorn ewes
were based on East Mundalla
bloodlines and were offered
by Stephen and Linley Rose,
Wickepin.
Mr Flavel said he had been
looking for big-framed ewes
to join to Prime SAMM
rams, working towards his
efforts to produce an F1 ewe
as a breeding base and was
pleased that he had found
such a top quality line.
Once again the sale
consisted mainly of the
younger 1.5yo ewes which
tended to attract the higher
values, such as 300 March
shorn ewes also based on
East Mundalla breeding
offered by EI & SM Astbury
that were bought for $113.50
by Landmark Pingelly.
The Thomson family, DW
& RJ Thomson, Tincurrin,
offered close on 1000 1.5yo
ewes in the sale over three
lines and buyers bid up
strongly on them.
Their biggest line of 639
Collinsville blood ewes,
which were August shorn,
were purchased at $110 by
return buyer JS & EN
Bagshaw, Boyup Brook.
Ngaree Farm offered
another impressive line of
261 1.5yo ewes which were
purchased at $108.50 by R &
K Drage, Mt Barker.
The line of classy maidens
had been shorn in August and
were based on Rutherglen
bloodlines.
Mal and Matt
Cunningham, ML & BM
Cunningham, Pingelly,
followed the sale from Corrigin
and purchased a line of 449
1.5yo July shorn, Ronern blood
ewes for $103.50 from
Brooklands Park.
Just failing to make the
$100 price tag were two lines
of 1.5yo ewes offered by
Cuballing operation NH
Whittwer & Co.
Both lines, which
contained 310 head each,
were pencilled in on the
clerking sheet at $99.50 with
Elders Finley, Finley,
Victoria, recorded as the
buyer.
The ewes offered by the
Cuballing operation were
August shorn and based on
Eastville Park bloodlines.
Another line just falling
short of the magical $100
mark at $97.50 was offered
by ML & CB Talbot,
Wickepin.
The big line of 474 1.5yo
East Strathglen blood,
August shorn ewes, were
headed south when WJ Hunt
& Co, Mt Barker, had the
final bid on them at $97.50.
Also heading south through
the bidding of Landmark Mt
Barker agent Charlie Staite,
was a draft of 288 1.5yo
September shorn, Rutherglen

blood ewes offered by RJ &
SM Elson, Yealering.
Mr Staite purchased the
ewes at $95.50 for SA & CA
Beech, Mt Barker.
Return vendors Roger and

their ewes make more than
$90 when their line of 170
1.5yo September shorn,
Nepowie blood ewes was
knocked down at $93.50 to
Landmark Pingelly.
Regular sale vendor Colin
Turner, CJ Turner, Wickepin,
offering in his last sale also
sold his line of 1.5yo ewes to
make good money.
The line of 210 Eastville
blood, September shorn ewes
sold at $91.50 to CJ
Saunders, Narrogin.
A mixed line of 111 1.5yo
and 2.5yo ewes offered by
DC & DM Kirby, stayed
locally when it was
purchased at $96 by Dews
Excavating, Wickepin.
The Kirby’s ewes were
based on Collinsville blood
and September shorn.
Values stayed strong as the
ewes got older, with a line of
98 3.5yo September shorn
ewes based on Eastville
bloodlines offered by Colin
Turner, CJ Turner, bringing
in $101 after it was knocked
down to RA & D Page,
Pingelly.
Jangering Pty Ltd offered
304 2.5yo July shorn ewes
based on Rutherglen
bloodlines, and these were
snapped up by Landmark
Lake Grace agent Gary Prater
on behalf of AW Cameron &
Son, Lake Grace, for $93.50.
Mr Prater also purchased
three lines of older ewes on
behalf of JD & JG Smith,
Lake Grace and began with
184 2.5-3.5yo September
shorn ewes from Elsegood &
Son for $89.
He quickly followed up by
buying 349 4.5yo September
shorn, Eastville blood ewes
from Colin Turner, for $88
before finishing with 191 3.55.5yo September shorn,
Collinsville blood ewes from
DC & DM Kirby for $87.

❐ The Landmark team selling the $114.50 top-priced pen of 1.5yo ewes at Wickepin.
What the agent said:
LANDMARK Corrigin agent Tony
Douglass said the outcome of the sale
was fantastic, with the Corrigin yarding
in particular offering a top quality
selection of outstanding lines.
“Every line attracted solid
competition and the good sheep sold
very, very well,” Mr Douglass said.
“It’s the best yarding we’ve seen here
in a while and all credit to the vendors
on presenting first class sheep.
“The sale was strongly supported by
both buyers and the Landmark network
across both venues and helped it live up
to the title of the State Premier ewe and
wether sale.”
Landmark auctioneer Mark Warren
was equally pleased with the result and
believed good seasonal conditions in the
area combined with a positive sheep
market were key factors to success.
“Once again it was an outstanding
line-up across both venues from repeat
vendors, who always put together an
outstanding offering for this sale,” Mr
Warren said.
“Overall both venues were above
expectations and a reflection of the
exceptional quality of ewes and lambs
yarded.”
