Letter to all CHAMP Parents - JM McDonald Sports Complex

Dear CHAMP Parents,
Welcome to the NEW CHAMP (Cortland Homer Afterschool Mentorship Program)! Our NEW CHAMP
Afterschool Sports Program is a unique NYS approved afterschool childcare service housed at the JM McDonald
Sports Complex. The new program builds off of a ten year partnership between the JMM Complex and SUNY
Cortland’s Department of Physical Education. The partnership is dedicated to providing affordable – quality (as
little as $6.00 per day!) afterschool programming to the greater Cortland/Homer community.
We are excited to announce that our current CHAMP director, Ms. Alexis Abdo will be back this fall! Ms. Abdo
completed her undergraduate (SUNY Cortland) and Masters Degree (Canisius College) in Physical Education. She is
currently employed part time as an elementary PE specialist in the Onondaga Central School District and has worked
as an adjunct professor at SUNY Cortland. Ms. Abdo is dedicated to improving quality of life and leading a
physically active lifestyle for all children.
As part of the CHAMP program, we are offering a newly decorated classroom, healthy snack choices with daily
health education tips, as well as quality sports programming and afterschool homework help. The program provides a
unique small group (1 v 3) staff to child ratio that creates lasting and positive relationships. SUNY Cortland students
from the Physical Education Department complete service hours as part of a course in their major. The partnership
provides a win/win situation that benefits both student and child.
CHAMP BEGINS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER, 8
The following is a sample CHAMP schedule:
3:30-4:00 - Individualized homework help
4:00-5:00 - Nationally approved quality physical activity curriculum – gross/fine
motor activities, locomotor movements
5:00-5:15 - Healthy snack attack and health food education
5:15-6:00 - Individualized homework help/fine motor activities
