TIPS FROM THE JCC FRONT DESK

We can’t stress enough,
now that winter is here, if the
weather is bad, before you
head out, please call the JCC
at 732-494-3232 to make sure
we are open or that a program
you want to attend is still on.

Is the information we have
in our computer for you up-todate (address, phone number,
cell phone number and email)? Please check at the front desk. If we need to
contact you about a cancelled program we may not be able to reach you
unless your information is correct.

Please be careful in our parking lot particularly when parents with young
children are present.

We always want to give callers our full attention but certain times are busier
at the JCC front desk and lobby than others. The best times to call the front
desk are before 10:00 AM and after 1:00 PM.

Please try to register for programs before the day of the program.
Registering for a 10:30 class at 10:30 can be difficult for staff and can be
disruptive to the speaker when people walk in late.

Please be patient when waiting for assistance at the front desk. If the
receptionists are busy with another customer or on the phone please know
that they will give you the same attention when it is your turn.

If you are paying for a program or trip with cash at the front desk please try
to have the exact amount. The front desk does not always have change.
Wishing you all a happy, healthy and safe 2015!

A fallen spy
A missing masterpiece
A daring mission
The Heist

Legendary spy and art restorer Gabriel Allon is in Venice repairing an
alterpiece by Veronese when he receives an urgent summons from the
Italian police. The eccentric London art dealer Julian Isherwood has
stumbled upon a chilling murder scene in Lake Como, and is being held
as a suspect. To save his friend, Gabriel must track down the real killers

Sometimes the best way to find a stolen masterpiece is to steal another

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2015 at 10:00 AM— The Train to Warsaw by Gwen
Edelman
Jascha and Lilka separately fled from the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942. Reunited years later,
they live in London where Jascha has become a celebrated writer, feted for his dark
tales about his war adventures. One day, forty years after the war, Jascha receives a
letter inviting him to give a reading in Warsaw. He tells Lilka that
nothing remains of the city they knew and that wild horses couldn’t
drag him back. Nostalgic for the city of her childhood, Lilka prevails;
together, traveling by train through a frozen December landscape,
they return to the city of their past. When they unwittingly find
themselves back in what was once the ghetto, they will discover that
they still have secrets between them.
A riveting story of the nature of desire and the cost of survival, The
Train to Warsaw is a haunting and unforgettable portrait of a man and
a woman who cannot escape their past.

FAMOUS MALE OPERA SINGERS:
THE STARS OF THE PAST AND
TODAY TOO
Throughout the long
history of opera performances
many star singers of different
voice types have supplied their
share of big box-office
personalities. In the complicated equation that brings people into an opera
house –the musical thrills, the romantic stories, the theatrical spectacle the
most potent factor is the charisma of the singers. Although the list of
famous opera singers is legion, the male performer has always, with rare
exception, been in second place, far behind the artists at the top of the
pecking order – the female singer. They’re the stars, the ones with the
glamour, the sex appeal, and because they are usually the damsels in
some kind of distress they are the biggest emotional draw. Join us for a
look at some of the men who have been able to rival some of the female
greats for the male equivalent of “DIVA” status.

BEHIND THE ARTISTS AND THEIR HUMOR
A Two-Part Series with
Presenter: Larry Wolfert
“You don't stop laughing because you grow old. You grow old
because you stop laughing.” Stay young by learning about the people who
made America laugh in the twentieth century – ranging from Charlie Chaplin
to Sid Caesar to Carol Burnett to Jerry Seinfeld and dozens in between. The
primary focus will be on exploring their paths to stardom
and their downfalls – as well as a sampling of some of their
better known routines and scenes. The emphasis will be on
the dynamic changes in comedy from the 1940’s thru
1980’s. As it is said, laughter is the best medicine.
Larry Wolfert has been an instructor at the Osher Lifelong
Learning Institute at Rutgers University (OLLI-RU) for the past several years.
He teaches three different courses and has been noted as one of their most
enjoyed lecturers. His presentations encourage audience participation

Presented by Ted Otten &
Michael Kownacky
Singer and actor Paul Robeson was born in
Princeton, NJ in 1898 and trained as a lawyer at
Rutgers and Columbia, but the racism of the United
States made him turn to Europe to pursue his true
love, a career in the performing arts.
He was named as an enemy of the government in
1947 for his condemnation of the treatment of
American blacks received in America while favorably
commenting on the tolerance he perceived to be
shown by the U.S.S.R. Robeson toured Europe giving concerts and
appeared in several films.
In this lecture, we will be looking at many of his forgotten
performances, some with other “ex-pat” Americans such as Elizabeth Welch.
With over 30 years of experience as radio hosts of WWFM’s The Dress
Circle, Ted Otten & Mike Kownacky, bring the world of the performing arts to
their audiences.

Vocalists of the
1930s, 40s and 50s
with David Aaron
During the 1930s, 40s and 50s every Big Band had at least
one featured vocalist. Many bands has both male and female
singers. It was the job of the singers to add musical variety, and
great appearance to the otherwise bland look of the musicians on
the band stand.
There were countless numbers of singers that sang with the
bands for a very short time then quit, but there were others that
stayed for years.
We’ll listen to the bios and recordings of 28 of the most
famous vocalists from the golden era of the Big Bands.

During World War II, more than one thousand women volunteers completed the
WASP military pilot training program. They endured terrible Texas weather, snakes, spiders
and scorpions, as well as the hostility of some male instructors. Graduating WASPs piloted
every kind of military aircraft, tested new and overhauled airplanes (some with defective
parts or dangerous reputations), delivered more than 12,000 planes, and flew over
60,000,000 miles (sometimes towing targets that soldiers shot at with live ammunition!)
Thirty-eight of them died serving their country. Then they were told that men needed their
jobs and they were dismissed and forgotten.
Carol Simon Levin tells the story of the amazing WASPs through the eyes of Ann
Baumgartner Carl, the Jersey girl who trained as a WASP, became the only American
woman to test-fly experimental planes during the war, and the first woman in the world to fly
a jet airplane!

Presented
by
Robert
Butts
George Gershwin constantly strove to bring his compositions and shows to new
artistic levels. Starting as a songwriter whose songs were the hits of reviews, he began
working with his brother Ira in 1920 on their first major show: Lady, Be Good. Together
they contributed hit songs to the leading shows of the 1920s. Working with writers like
George Kaufman, Gershwin created shows that had a satiric social commentary edge to
them like Strike up the Band and Of Thee I Sing. In 1935, he bridged the gap between
Broadway and opera with Porgy and Bess. At the same time, Gershwin composed
music for the concert stage, starting with Rhapsody in Blue in 1924, composed for a
concert of modern music arranged by his colleague Paul Whiteman. The success of
Rhapsody in Blue led to commissions for the Piano Concerto, An American in Paris and
other works that have become part of every orchestra's repertoire.

Albert Einstein:
His Life and
Connection to
Judaism and Israel
PRESENTER: DR. BARBARA ROSOFF
Einstein’s name is synonymous with the word “genius”. He is well-known for having received a
Nobel Prize in physics, being a scientist, physicist, a humanitarian, a patent examiner and a world
statesman. But how many people know of his strong connection with Zionism and the State of Israel or
the fact that when Chaim Weitzman, the first president of Israel died, Einstein was offered the chance to
become president by Israel’s ambassador to Washington, Abba Eban with the caveat that he leave
Princeton and move to Israel? And how many people know of his negative relationship with his German
homeland, about renouncing his German citizenship two times and breaking off his friendships with
colleagues who supported anti-Semitism and not allowing his books to be sold in Germany or his name
to be placed on the rolls of any German scientific society?
Dr. Rosoff is currently on the faculty at the McCauley Institute for Lifelong Learning at Georgian
Court University, Lakewood and is a curriculum writer and teacher at the Rabbi Jack M. Rosoff
Hebrew High School, Congregation B’nai Israel, Rumson. She has published in secular and
Judaic journals, lectured on subjects ranging from education and psychology to secular and
Judaic feminism. She is currently focusing on “Albert Einstein: His Life and Universe”. She
received her doctorate at Rutgers University.

Helena Rubinstein:
Beauty is Power
Join us on this trip to the Jewish Museum which will include a docent-led
tour of the Helena Rubinstein: Beauty is Power exhibit.
This is the first exhibition to explore the ideas, innovations, and influence
of the legendary cosmetics entrepreneur Helena Rubinstein (1872 – 1965).
Madame (as she was universally known) helped break down the status quo of
taste by blurring boundaries between commerce, art, fashion, beauty, and
design. Through 200 objects Beauty Is Power reveals how Rubinstein’s unique
style and pioneering approaches to business challenged conservative taste and
heralded a modern notion of beauty, democratized and accessible to all.
Rubinstein rose from humble origins in small-town Jewish Poland to become a global icon of female
entrepreneurship and a leader in art, fashion, design, and philanthropy. As the head of a cosmetics empire
that extended across four continents, she was, arguably, the first modern self-made woman magnate. The
exhibition reunites selections from Rubinstein’s famed art collection, dispersed at auction in 1966, featuring
works by Pablo Picasso, Elie Nadelman, Frida Kahlo, Max Ernst, Leonor Fini, Joan Miró, and Henri Matisse,
among others, as well as more than thirty works from her peerless collection of African and Oceanic art.
Other highlights include Rubinstein’s beloved miniature period rooms, jewelry, and clothing designed by
Cristóbal Balenciaga, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Paul Poiret. Rubinstein’s savvy for self-promotion is seen in
portraits of her made by the leading artists of her day, from Marie Laurencin to Andy Warhol. Also on display
are vintage advertisements, cosmetics products, and promotional films related to her beauty business.
We will be divided into 2 groups for the 45 minute docent tour. Group 1 tour will start at 1:00;
Group 2 tour will start at 1:30. The Café at the Museum is currently closed with no opening
date announced. Weather permitting you are free to go for lunch on your own in the vicinity
or bring your lunch and eat on the bus.
