Happy New Year!
On behalf of the entire staff of A.Y. Jackson, I would like to extend best wishes for a
happy and healthy 2015. I would like to welcome Sandra Blakely to the A.Y. Jackson
community as she will be the new school principal starting in February. I have been
privileged to have been part of the A.Y. Jackson school community for the last four and
half years and I would like to thank all of the students, staff, and parents for making my
time at A.Y. such an enjoyable experience. I am proud to be have been a small part of
such a vibrant, caring school community.
With only two weeks remaining before the start of final exams for semester one, students still have lots of opportunities to demonstrate their learning in terms of assessments. Parents are reminded that they can check out what is due in each class by consulting the class calendars on the school website www.ayj.ca.
Teachers will be nominating students for the final credit intervention session of the semester. It will take place on Wednesday, January 14th.
EQAO Math testing for grade nine students will begin on Wednesday, January 14th and
finish on Thursday, January 15th.
A reminder that the January Final Exam Schedule is as follows:
Monday, January 26th– Period 4 classes
Tuesday, January 27th- Period 3 classes
Wednesday, January 28th- Period 2 classes Thursday, January 29th- Period 1 classes
Friday, January 30th—Credit Rescue, Oral Examinations
In the event of a snow day causing bus cancellations, all exams will be moved back one
day.

Cocoa and Cram will be happening in the library on Wednesday, January 14th and on
the following on both Monday, January 19th and Wednesday, January 21st. Cocoa and
Cram is hosted by our J-Crew leaders and provides a place for grade nine students to
work on summatives and study for final exams with the support of senior students.
The following is a list of important dates from our Student Services department. The
Canadian Armed Forces will be visiting A.Y. Jackson Monday, January 12th at lunch
time to discuss career opportunities. The OUAC application deadline is Wednesday,
January 14th. Our Grade Eight Parent Information Night is Thursday, January 15 from
6:30-8:30 p.m. Algonquin College will be holding an Open House Saturday, January
17 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Portfolio Information Sessions are from 12 p.m. until 3
p.m. Night school registration for high school courses is from January 19th –23th.

A.Y. athletes returned from the Holiday Break and were back in action this week. The
Junior Boys Basketball team won both their games over Franco Ouest and Maurice
Lapointe. The Senior Girls Volleyball team and the Senior Boys Basketball team had
the opportunity to practice before returning to action next week.
Students from all grades will have an opportunity to attend A.Y.'s first ever "Make it
Happen" event. This overnight experience, facilitated entirely by students and supervised by staff, will involve skill building (communication, team-building, risk-taking,
conflict resolution), fun competitions for both the mind and body, and a beautification
project at the school. Cost is $70.00, which covers meals and snacks, overnight security guard and Friday night entertainment, as well as supplies for the skill sessions. Registration forms will be available Monday, January 12th, and will be due back by
Wednesday, January 21st. A maximum of 80 students can attend the event, with 10
spots being reserved for each grade. After the grade-specific spots have been filled, applications will be honoured on a first-come first serve basis--applications forms must be
