SMA RAPID SHUTDOWN BOX
ON ROOF WITHIN 10’ OF PV
What is the Rapid Shutdown System?
The SMA Rapid Shutdown System is comprised
of two components: the Rapid Shutdown
Box and the Rapid Shutdown Controller
emergency disconnect switch. It is designed to
comply with the rapid shutdown requirements
outlined in 2014 NEC 690.12.
When will the UL listed Rapid
Shutdown System become available?
SMA’s Rapid Shutdown System will be
available in early 2015.
Where can an installer purchase it?
The Rapid Shutdown Box will be available
through SMA’s Authorized Distributor network.

Is this Rapid Shutdown System
available for all TL-US inverters?
Yes, it is compatible with all TL-US with Secure
Power Supply (SPS) models ranging from 3
to 7.7 kW.
How does it work?
DC module strings are connected to the SMA
Rapid Shutdown Box, installed within 10 feet
of the array per 2014 NEC requirements. This
solution also eliminates the need for a separate
junction box before the homerun to the inverter
and uses standard MC4 connectors. The Rapid
Shutdown Controller is installed next to the
inverter or AC main and communicates with
the Rapid Shutdown Box via a low voltage
communication line. When emergency
responders activate the switch, contactors
open inside the Rapid Shutdown Box, ensuring
no high voltage DC outside of the array.
What differentiates this solution
from third-party solutions?
The TL-US series features the world’s only
Secure Power Supply, capable of providing
up to 1,500 watts of power in the event of
a grid outage. Because the Rapid Shutdown
Box uses DC electricity from the array to power
itself, it eliminates the need for external AC
power. This enables the SPS feature to function
in the case of a grid outage – something thirdparty solutions are unable to do.
Will it function with SPS?
Only SMA’s solution allows the SPS feature
to function in the case of a grid outage.
Where will the Rapid Shutdown
System be produced?
The Rapid Shutdown System will proudly
be assembled in the USA at our production
facility in Denver, Colorado.
