Wednesday 14 January 2015 Nkhatha to SSU BLOW FOR CHIEFS PREMIER Soccer League leaders Kaizer Chiefs have lost Kingston Nkhatha to SuperSport United and are likely to be forced back into the transfer market again just days after confirming the signing of David Zulu. The Pretoria club have swept Nkhatha away from under Chiefs’ noses by signing a pre-contract with him for next season as Chiefs had not renewed his deal with the Naturena club. Players who have six months left on their current contracts are allowed to talk to, and even sign pre-contracts, with other teams. It has proven somewhat embarrassing for Chiefs to have a key player, who is a favourite of coach Stuart Baxter, so brazenly pinched from their camp and it means they must now seek a replacement as they try to boost their ranks for a difficult second half of the season. Nkhatha is likely to go to SuperSport this month as a deal for his new club to take him earlier than planned is being discussed, Chiefs’ football manager Bobby Motaung has confirmed. Chiefs see no point in keeping him any longer if he is leaving in May and Nkhatha is likely to suffer more abuse from fans. He is often the subject of regular derision when he makes a mistake - likely a major SUPERSPORT UNITED HAVE STOLEN ONE OF STUART BAXTER’S FAVOURITES FROM UNDER KAIZER CHIEFS’ NOSES AND THE PSL LOG LEADERS NOW NEED A REPLACEMENT 0! 0 0,0 0 R2 PINCHED Kingston Nkhatha, pictured ahead of Edwin Gyimah of Black Aces, is likely to transfer to SuperSport United this month and earlier than scheduled after the Pretoria club signed a pre-contract with him for next season. factor in his decision to depart. Although Zulu has beefed up the ranks at Chiefs, they still need another forward for the second part of the current season, which restarts in mid-February. Plus their participation in the African Champions League also begins next month. It means they must now go back in the market searching for a scarce commodity – a goal scorer. Zulu is the first major signing of the January transfer window, but this was a deal that Chiefs and Chippa United had concluded months ago. SuperSport are the only other club who have secured new faces with the signing of Nkhatha and Jeremy Brockie, the New Zealand international. Mamelodi Sundowns, usually the dominant force in the market, have not made any move yet but are expected to add one or two signings, while Orlando Pirates are rumoured to be raiding Platinum Stars for the services of goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane and midfielder Robert Ng’ambi. But all have until the end of the month to conclude their business as the transfer window only closes on Friday 30 January. Certainly a victory was all that could stop this tidal wave, but I’m not optimistic about when we fail again. The pressure coming back is inevitable, and there will be room for error again. Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said he was delighted with Barcelona’s 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday, but quickly added that he was not certain the “tidal wave” of criticism and speculation about his future as head coach is over. Because it’s a team that’s just beginning, there’s a danger of there being a whole focus on me because of this situation, but from being inside it and speaking to the coach regularly, there’s a whole squad of players. There’s David Villa, Josh Saunders, a whole squad. That’s what is going to win us the MLS next year, not whether I trot up in March or June. Frank Lampard, downplaying his absence for the first part of the 2015 MLS season with New York City FC. 2 It has been an unforgettable year and to win a trophy of this kind is something unique. I want to continue working as I have so far, to go on, to win more titles as an individual and in a team. Of course this is something that is always with me. I want to become one of the greatest players of all time and this requires a lot of effort but I hope to get there. Cristiano Ronaldo on Monday night after being crowned World Player of the Year yet again. You have been waiting for the moment to tell me I have the same points as David Moyes . . . it is a bad result. We have to be better. We were the dominating team but you have to create more chances when you are the dominating team. Louis van Gaal after United’s loss to Southampton and being told his team has the same number of points now as at the same stage last season. He will now call on the services of a Zen master to deal with the mental issues he sees within his squad. Wow! I’m not sure where I’ll be next year. I’ve always said that I’d like to finish my career at Barcelona . . . but as Cristiano just said, nobody knows what the future holds and much less so in the case of the football world, where everything can change overnight. Lionel Messi fuelling speculation that he could consider a move away from Barcelona just one day after claiming he had “no intention” of leaving the Camp Nou. From last year I learned the phrase ‘it can happen’- it’s always like that against Juventus. We were in the game on 1-1, but the offside goal changed everything and we had to chase again. Napoli coach Rafa Benitez seems to imply that Juventus will win the Scudetto this season because they benefits from so many refereeing errors. I say that Juventus will win the Scudetto. After seeing so many Juventus games, that is all I can say. I am sorry for Roma, but I realised Juventus will win the Scudetto ... Benitez again. African Nations Cup kicks off and it’s set to produce an upset IT’S ACTION AT LAST AFTER BEING OVERSHADOWED BY THE EBOLA VIRUS, AFRICA’S PREMIER COMPETITION IS ABOUT TO START AND BAFANA BAFANA CAN WIN IT THE weekend kick-off of the African Nations Cup gives the action a chance to supersede the off-field drama after months of controversy with Bafana Bafana among a bevy of legitimate candidates for the title. Equatorial Guinea stepped in as last-minute hosts after Morocco were stripped of the right to hold the tournament when they asked for a postponement over fears of a spread of the Ebola virus. The dreaded disease has overshadowed the build-up to the 16-team tournament, but once the football gets underway on Saturday evening, it is sure the action will dominate the agenda. This is a tournament that is wide open and is likely to produce a surprise winner - as was the case in the last two editions. Zambia upset the formbook with their success in 2012 and Nigeria had a young and inexperienced team going into the 2013 finals, yet emerged after three weeks as the best team in Africa. There are parallels with that Nigerian team and the current South African side who are heading to Equatorial Guinea. They are also young and inexperienced and ostensibly a team being built for the future. Maybe they will achieve the same as the Nigerians did, way ahead of schedule. Algeria are the top-ranked African football nation but will not start as favourites as they are too inconsistent. Ivory Coast have been favourites over the last five tournaments, but now have a reputation as GOOD LUCK chokers. They might emerge from the ashes of previous disappointments now that the burden of expectation is lifted off them. The tournament starts on Saturday and runs until 8 February with plenty of chances for punters to bet on all the games through the Fikile Mbalula, Minister of Sport Recreation, hands over the SA flag to Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba just before the team left South Africa last week en route to the 2015 African Cup of Nations. opening week. The Bundesliga are on a break, but the English, Spanish, Portuguese and Italians provide plenty of key games this weekend. There are difficult away trips for Chelsea, Southampton and Manchester United, while Manchester City entertain Arsenal on Sunday. Barcelona are also away against Deportivo La Coruna, at a time of some vulnerability as they seem distracted by suggestions Lionel Messi is seeking to move away. It seems almost implausible to contemplate a Barca line-up without his genius. 3 HOW DID HE GET IN? SUBSTANCE TO PRINCE’S ELECTION BID PERHAPS the most surprising inclusion in FIFA’s 2014 Team of the Year was Paris Saint-Germain defender David Luiz. The Brazil international was widely criticised for his performances at the 2014 World Cup, and prior to that, spent much of the first half of 2014 on the bench at Chelsea. After transferring to Paris St Germain in July for R750 million, the 27-year-old has made 22 appearances so far this season, being mostly used as a centre back alongside compatriot Thiago Silva, who also earned a spot in the FIFA Team Of The Year, which is voted for by FIFPro, the world players’ union, and included 23,383 votes from 58 countries. TOTTI CLICK TAKES SOME STICK LAZIO president Claudio Lotito described Francesco Totti’s selfie, which he took after scoring the second of his two goals in the Rome derby that ended 2-2 on Sunday, as “inappropriate”. Totti’s goals came in the second half after Lazio jumped into a 2-0 lead in the first period. “The selfie was an inappropriate gesture that has nothing to do with soccer,” Lotito fumed in an interview with Radio Due. “Totti’s selfie was out of place, and my captain Stefano Mauri would never have done it.” FIFA presidential candidate Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein says he will launch a 10-year programme of reform and change if he manages to unseat Sepp Blatter in May. In his first public comments since his initial candidacy statement, the 39-year-old Jordanian, currently attending the Asian Cup in Australia, says FIFA still has plenty to do to regain trust and credibility. Although under Blatter a significant number of reforms have been put in place, Prince Ali says real transparency is still lacking. For instance, he wants remuneration packages PRINCE ALI BIN AL HUSSEIN of senior FIFA officials to be released and terms of office to be restricted. “FIFA as an organisation tends to be a bit secretive,” Prince Ali told reporters. “We should be open and happy and confident to be engaged with everyone. We have to really focus on restoring people’s confidence in the organisation. That will be our No 1 priority.” FIFA has been under fire over its handling of Michael Garcia’s investigation of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process which led to the American resigning as joint head of FIFA’s ethics committee. Under pressure to release more details, FIFA announced last month it would publish an “appropriate” version of the report but in redacted form. Playing alongside captain Dean Furman, they represent the engine room of the side and are crucial in giving Bafana Bafana the bite in the midfield to not only disrupt opposition play, but also get the side on to the front foot when in possession. Jali has always been a player of great promise since he emerged as a teenager at University of Pretoria during the then second-tier side’s run to the final of the 2009 Nedbank Cup. He does have the potential to divide, though, his natural confidence often mistaken for arrogance, and he has sometimes rubbed even fans of Pirates up the wrong way, which has subsequently made him media shy. Comparatively small in stature, he is surprisingly strong and plays with plenty of heart. There is no doubt he has stepped up his game following his move to Europe, where he is a key figure for his club. He moved from Orlando Pirates to Belgian side KV Oostende in January last year and now displays more finesse and polish. He seems to have been around forever, but is still only 24 and can thank a legend of South African football for plucking him from obscurity and putting him on the path STRONG Andile Jali might be small but he is a strong midfielder who must play a big role if Bafana Bafana is to progress in the African Nations Cup. to international football. Born in Matatiele in the Eastern Cape in the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains, he was spotted by ex-Bafana Bafana coach Clive Barker during a youth tournament. Barker immediately recommended Jali to his nephew Steve Barker, then coach of AmaTuks, who had no hesitation snapping up the youngster. After helping the side to the Nedbank Cup decider, where his absence from the final through suspension was keenly felt as AmaTuks lost 1-0 to Moroka Swallows, Jali was signed by Pirates. He somewhat controversially missed out on selection for the 2010 FIFA World Cup due to a mild heart condition, but then helped Pirates to win six trophies in two seasons from 2010 and 2012, as well as reaching the final of the 2013 African Champions League. His newfound good fortune on the field has been matched off it too when he survived a potentially fatal car accident in March last year with barely a scratch, something he admits was a humbling experience. In Belgium he is already a fan favourite and at Oostende they know better than anyone that they should appreciate Jali while he is still around. This Nations Cup could yet hasten his exit from the club with the eyes of many European scouts transfixed on Equatorial Guinea. He has targeted a place in the semi-finals of the tournament and says he is out to enjoy the experience because he has ability to play without pressure. “The experience with Pirates means I’ll never suffer from pressure. We want to show the best of the best and if we reach the semi-finals, we’ll be happy,” he recently told reporters. 5 SOCCER POOLS R11 000 000 paid out every week! Captain Of All aimed at big Cape sprint CAPE TOWN - Grade 1 winner Captain Of All has long had the Betting World Cape Flying Championship as his target and the four-year-old stands out among the 18 entries for the R1-million Grade 1 race over 1000m at Kenilworth on 24 January. Captain Of All won the Gold Medallion as a two-year-old, but was off for 13 months after scoring at Kenilworth in November 2013. He returned to winning ways in last month’s Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes (Grade 2). “He never had any major issues but he had a little stifle injury and then a small joint problem,” SUNDAY 18 JANUARY 2015 MARK VENUE OVAL 24 RACE 1 P6 said trainer Dennis Drier. “It was annoying, but what he needed was rest and time.” Captain Of All beat Copper Parade by less than 0.50 lengths when winning the Diadem Stakes, with Fly By Night 0.75 lengths back third. The Yvette Bremner-trained Computaform Sprint winner and Mike Bass’s Mercury Sprint heroine are likely to be in opposition in this Cape Town highlight. There are 23 entries for the Cape Thoroughbred Sales Book 1 Graduates Race, including Zambezi River, who won the Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes over 200m further in November. Last 5 runs: 09-437 17 Time running out for some big guns in Champions Cup RUGBY 5 TOULON ARE IN DEADLY FORM AT PRESENT AND LOOK SET TO SWEEP ULSTER ASIDE IN SPITE OF THE IRISH HAVING TURNED THE CORNER Saturday 17 January M1 1 M2 2 M3 1 M4 1 M5 4 Cost: 1,2,4 x 1,2 x 1,2,4 x 1,4 R360 x 4,5 SOME of the giants of Champions Cup need to wake up this weekend as Europe’s premier club competition enters its final fortnight. Several of the smaller unions are looking look good, but some of the bigger teams have played themselves into form in the regional competitions over the last few weeks and could be more effective now. Let’s look at the matches in this weekend’s Rugby 5: M1: Saracens v Munster Saracens come into this match desperate for some momentum after their somewhat surprising one-point loss to Gloucester at Kingholm last weekend. That was one of the upsets of the AVIVA Premiership thus far and certainly halted their momentum which was building rather ominously. Munster easily beat Zebre last weekend in Italy with a comprehensive 33-7 victory. There are three points between these teams in Pool 1 with Saracens in second ahead of their Irish opponents. This match becomes so hard to call now because Saracens return home and will be desperate to put last week’s embarrassment behind them. A loss for Munster will be deemed a failure because it all but rules out their chances of progressing. Tough so play wide. M2: Toulon v Ulster Toulon will be strong favourites against Ulster, who have turned the corner since the last match week in Champions Cup. However, they need all results to go their way if they want a smidgeon of hope to qualify for the next round of the competition. Toulon are dominant at the moment – they sit atop Pool 3 and their Top 14 form is deadly. They should win at home. M3: Harlequins v Wasps Wasps have overachieved this season while Quins have been formidable only in this competition and pretty average in the AVIVA Premiership. Wasps do not have an overly great side on paper, certainly not in comparison to their opponents anyway. Wasps smashed Sale last weekend while Harlequins beat lowly London Welsh. Pool 2 is the most open because Harlequins are at the top of the log on 13 points, one ahead of Wasps and Leinster, who should be far ahead. The Irish side should beat Castres so the winner of this match has the inside track to making the next stage. Wasps are narrowly fancied. M4: Toulouse v Bath Toulouse are unbeaten in this com- petition and the French giants are favourites to win. However, Bath are in form and much has changed since these two sides met earlier in the Champions Cup. Whether that will change the result remains to be seen. Toulouse have a litany of stars in their squad, whereas Bath rely heavily on a strong team effort. If this match was at the Rec, Bath would be given a serious chance, but it isn’t and their prospects are compromised. M5: Ospreys v Northampton Northampton are top of Pool 5 and England at the moment after a massive campaign. Ospreys would have looked at this fixture and thought that a win could be attained in Swansea. Suddenly it looks the opposite. This is a case in point about European giants finding their feet against a side not expected to uproot any trees in the Champions Cup. A loss for the Welsh side would rule them out of further progress, while the Saints can seal their place in the last eight with a win. That is the expected result. Three Soccer 10 players score big SOCCER 10 fans are continuing to win BIG and last Saturday three Soccer 10 players each won more than R200,000! They were the only players to correctly forecast the outcome of all 10 matches in the pool and they won R209,473 apiece, plus their relevant share from the consolation payout of R3,142 for any nine of the 10 matches correct. The weekend also yielded a big Soccer 13 payout with the 20 winners of the all-13-correct section of last Saturday’s pool each collecting more than R670,000! Soccer 10 costs only R2 for a single entry and Soccer 13 just R1.50. BANKER 18 Bryan Habana’s side, Toulon, is in form and the French side looks a banker when they take on Ulster at home this weekend. De Kock has new Carnival plan NO SAND RUNNERS TRAINER SAYS HE WILL FOCUS ON TURF RACES AFTER HIS CHARGES FLOP ON THE NEW MEYDAN SAND TRACK DUBAI - Trainer Mike de Kock has revised his strategy for the 2015 Dubai World Cup Carnival after seven of his 11 runners at the first Carnival meeting on Thursday last week finished downfield. He said on his website mikedekockracing.com that the results would put his Dubai team on the “right track” going forward. “I’m not worried at all. After tonight we can be certain that there is a track bias so now we know exactly where we stand. You can draw lines through all the poor sand runs. Unless there are absolutely no other options, we won’t have another entry on dirt this season. “To win on this track you need runners with good gate speed that can jump and lead or sit up second or third. Otherwise you may as well stay at home. “Our contenders just couldn’t match their better-suited rivals for early speed. The kickback from just behind the front rank is bad, the slower horses get it in the face and sometimes it’s so severe they battle to breathe. “The only proven sand racer in our string is Pylon. I’m not even going to consider giving any of our other South African arrivals a try on the surface. “There are no true sand gallopers among them and while we will now have fewer racing opportunities, we’ll do what we have to do. We may end up with several of our runners in the same events on the turf track, but we’ll exercise our available options to the best WOODRUFF 1-2 benefit.” While he won’t have many runners on the new Meydan sand track, he said it would serve as an excellent training surface. “The track surface is actually very good, it’s kind to horses working hard in training. But we’re badly in need of a good rain shower here. It’s a young track and still a bit loose. That’s why there’s so much kickback. It needs a chance to settle, it will improve with more racing.” The trainer was pleased with the good showings posted by his turf runners. Newcomer Ajeeb ran on solidly after a lengthy absence to finish fourth in a 1000m sprint, a trip now well short of his best. Mushreq and Sanshaawes both made the frame in the Listed Singspiel Stakes over 1800m and Merhee just needed his 1400m outing, getting beaten less than five lengths Killua Castle leads home a Woodruff 1-2 in last Sunday’s Grade 3 London News Stakes at Turffontein. He beat stablemate Sabadell by 2.50 lengths. by a smart Godolphin horse. De Kock was especially happy with Mushreq’s second to Godolphin’s True Story. “True Story always looked a cut above and was going to be hard to beat. He comes from the leading Group 1 ranks in Europe and that’s exciting because Mushreq is at best a top Group 2 horse from South Africa. That he acquitted himself so well proves again South African-breds are able to hold their own anywhere in the world.” In other news from the stable, the team was pleased with Ertijaal’s win in the Listed Sea Cottage Stakes at Turffontein on Sunday, his third win from as many starts. Assistant trainer Mathew de Kock said: “It was a nightmare between this run and his last run. Ertijaal missed a lot of work prior to the Sea Cottage Stakes and we were in two minds whether to run him, but we had to because of our plans to go to the Cape Derby at the end of the month. “Ertijaal is not suited to the tight inside track and for him to come and win a race like this after his interrupted preparation against some decent three-year-olds says a lot. He is way above average.” He also believes Mutamakkin, another promising three-yearold who won the last race at the meeting, is starting to progress. “Mutamakkin is a talented horse and also wasn’t course suited. We were disappointed in his previous run so we fitted him with blinkers and he won a nice race.” The second Dubai World Cup Carnival meeting is this Thursday and De Kock has seven runners. South African racing fans will also be interested to see how Slumdogmillionaire does in his international debut for Doug Watson in Race 7. SAVANNAH SONG BADLY BRUISED AFTER KENILWORTH FALL SAVANNAH Song, who suffered a crunching fall when clipping heels and doing a cartwheel in front of the grandstand in Race 5 at Kenilworth last Saturday, is “badly bruised and a bit sore, but fortunately nothing serious”, according to her trainer Vaughan Marshall. According to the stipendiary stewards’ report: “CASTLETHORPE (K Neisius) shifted out slightly away from HAPPY FOREVER (P Strydom), which rolled out slightly in the latter stages, which resulted in MUSCATT (R Fourie) becoming cramped for galloping room, having to ease for a number of strides when awk- wardly placed between the heels of CASTLETHORPE (K Neisius) and EQUITY KICKER (G van Niekerk). SAVANNAH SONG (*X Carstens), which was following MUSCATT (R Fourie), clipped the heels of MUSCATT (R Fourie) and fell shortly before the finish. After reviewing the patrol films from various angles the board was of the opinion that no individual rider could be held responsible for this incident and took no action.” Savannah Song narrowly missed falling on apprentice Xavier Carstens, who “bounced up like a rubber ball and tried to get more rides on the day”. 19 Legislate found to have lung infection after Queen’s Plate FULL OF MUCUS CAPE TOWN - Reigning Horse Of The Year Legislate’s abysmal run in last Saturday’s L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate was explained by “the dirtiest lung wash” trainer Justin Snaith has seen. It was apparent early in the straight that the hot favourite for the country’s premier weight-forage 1600m race was in trouble. He had over-raced early off a very slow pace and looked lack-lustre in the straight, plodding home to finish last behind third-favourite Futura. As Richard Fourie told reporters afterwards, “Legislate didn’t quicken like he normally does and I realised then that he was not himself.” After coughing later, Legislate was given a lung wash this week and “he was full up with mucus”, said Snaith. This performance and subsequent diagnosis will lead racing fans to question whether he can win the R2.5-million J&B Met (Grade 1) over 2000m on 31 January. Snaith, however, warned: “This is not a bad infection and animals fight off bugs very fast. With the right medication he’ll be okay - most drugs nowadays have no withdrawals, so he will be drugfree going into the Met. He’s in the paddock and in a few days, he’ll be fine.” The ruling champion trainer said Futura had suffered from the same malady in the lead-up to the Queen’s Plate and that anyone who wrote Legislate off in the Met at the end of the month would be “mak- JUSTIN SNAITH SAYS LEGISLATE SHOULD RECOVER QUICKLY AND THAT ANYONE WHO WRITES HIM OFF FOR THE J&B MET WILL BE MAKING A BIG MISTAKE NEW FAVOURITE ing a big mistake”. “I just have to freshen him up and then get him ready for the race.” Snaith did have four winners at Kenilworth last Saturday but the successes were marred by what he described as “some shocking bad luck”. “We were expecting a very big day, but all the signs were there leading up to Legislate with runners getting scratched (like Caesour’s Ides and Villa Del Largo) and others getting interfered with (like Muscatt who nearly came down in a heart-stopping Race 5, in Futura (Bernard Fayd’Herbe) is now 18-10 favourite for the J&B Met after beating Louis The King in last Saturday’s L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. which Savannah Song and Xavier Carstens fell spectacularly shortly before the post),” he said. “Hopefully the stipendiary stewards will be stricter on Met Day and warn the jockeys beforehand that there will be zero tolerance for any interference. They must ride like they want to see another day!” Astro News, a new recruit to Snaith’s string, was the only horse supplemented into the Met on Monday. He had his first run for Snaith in the 1400m HP Security Pinnacle Stakes at Kenilworth on 25 October and went on to finish third in a Fairview feature in December.
