Neighbors Helping Neighbors . . .
What could be
better than that? It all
started about 27 years
ago, when a concerned school bus
driver began baking
muffins and collecting
The sign says it all . . . coats for cold and hungry children who rode
her bus. Soon after that, it developed into some tables
with boxes of food, set up by friends and even thoughtful
passers-by. In 2002, the current building was completed
in Moriarty, with 8,000 square feet to house the mission
that now offers a thrift store, a clothing bank, and food
pantry, as well as other services such as programs for the
elderly and disabled.
Nowadays, this caring enterprise feeds over
20,000 people a year, representing over 700 families. In
2013, emergency clothing was provided to over 2,500
families, and 1,500 folks in need received warm coats.
Last year Bethel served people from 23 local towns, and
also helped travelers from 25 states on their way through.
Serving this volume of clients from the East Mountain/Greater Estancia Valley area (approximately 4,500
square miles), requires 8 regular staff and many volunteers, particularly this time of year, when they will see
2,000 in November, and a similar number in December.
You can participate in the blessing by giving in
several ways. Volunteer orientation is every Thursday at
10 a.m. You can jump in and donate your time; most
days they need about 9 volunteers around the mission, so
opportunities abound. You can give money (Bethel is a
501(c)3 organization and registered nonprofit with the
state of New Mexico). This will be used to purchase food
for the pantry, and treats and toys for Christmas stockings
for clients’ families. Bethel also accepts gently used
clothing and household goods for the clothing bank and
thrift store.
A new opportunity in giving: donate your vehicle,
running or not. Proceeds will return to Bethel and be
used here for your East Mountain neighbors in need. Just
call the number below.
In December, Bethel Community Storehouse has
planned a Children’s Shopping Day so clients’ kids ages 4
to 12 can purchase gifts for family members. This event
will be Saturday the 13th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There
will be crafts and refreshments, with an appearance by
Santa at noon, and Jimbo’s music at 2 p.m.
The following day, they are partnering with the Moriarty Lions Club at the Lions building to provide Christmas toys. Children can see Santa and receive a gift, and
also a filled stocking from Bethel.
Please visit Bethel’s website for details, photos,
and current mission news. www.bethelstorehouse.org
Other contact information: Phone (505)832-6642. They
are located at 1719 4th Street (P.O. Box 968), Moriarty,
NM 87035.
Last year’s Children’s Shopping Day was a huge success.

"Epicurean Peas"
That was the name of this
dish in the magazine where
my mother-in-law discovered
it many years ago. It became
a holiday staple in their home,
and now has been passed along to the extended family, where we affectionately call it "Sherry
Peas" after that ingredient.
2 & 1/2 cups of peas (20 oz.) canned,
frozen or fresh
1 cup heavy cream
4 strips bacon
1/2 large onion, chopped
1 cup mushroom slices (canned or fresh)
1 Tbsp flour (more as needed)
Salt, pepper, and Worcester sauce to taste
1/4 cup sherry
If your peas are uncooked, cook as normal and
set aside.
Fry bacon, then remove it, reserving the grease
in the pan. Crumble/chop bacon and set aside.
Sauté onions in bacon grease until brown (pour
off a little grease if necessary).
Add flour and cream, stirring constantly over low
flame. When thickened and smooth, add
seasonings, sherry, mushrooms, and pieces of
bacon.
Add peas last; fold in gently.
And, as always, do enjoy!!
