MSU ORP GROUP OUTINGS
POLICIES AND INFORMATION
MSU students, faculty/staff, family members and university affiliates are eligible to participate. Each MSU
participant may sponsor one guest, exceptions may be granted. Members of the public may also participate on
a “space available” basis after the MSU priority registration deadline.
Outings which are sponsored by the ASMSU Outdoor Recreation Program operate under a “Cooperative
Adventurer” philosophy. In essence, whenever possible, each person shall have the opportunity to become
involved in the group decision making and problem solving process. Ultimately, individuals shall be totally
accountable for their actions. As each outing is a “Cooperative Adventure”, participants should make every effort
to insure that it is a rewarding and enjoyable experience for the group as well as the individual. Individuals who
are inadequately prepared may be denied participation (refer to Clothing & Equipment Checklist). Participants are
expected to share in all group related responsibilities during the course of the trip.
ASMSU Outdoor Recreation Program will designate a coordinator(s) for each outing. The coordinator’s duties will
be to arrange for transportation, assemble group equipment conduct a pre-trip meeting when deemed
appropriate and contribute to the overall organization of the outing. Sponsored activities are conducted on a
’coordinated’ rather than ‘guided’ basis. The coordinator(s) may not possess training, experience or certifications
commensurate with professional/commercial standards.
Nominal fees are charged which are based on cost recovery of direct expenses primarily including transportation,
group equipment, personnel, special use permits and other incidentals associated with the outing. Unless noted,
participants are responsible for personal gear, meals, clothing and other individual needs. Participants may obtain
some items at reduced rates through the Equipment Rental Service.
Participants must be aware that outdoor recreational activities involve risks and are in fact potentially dangerous.
Each individual must therefore assume sole responsibility for personal safety. Expenses for medical services related
to injury and/or illness, as well as rescue and/or evacuation costs are the responsibility of the participant.
Each person must sign a Contract for Participation prior to departure. Attendance at pre-trip meetings is
mandatory unless other arrangements have previously been made. Persons who are not represented at a pre-trip
meeting may be “zapped” from the trip list and the registration deposit will be forfeited. ASMSU Outdoor
Recreation reserves the right to modify or cancel any trip due to insufficient registration, hazardous conditions or
other extenuating circumstances. Refunds will be issued according to Montana State University Office of Business
Services policies.
Sponsored activities are subject to university, local, state and federal regulations. University vehicles and lodging
accommodations are designated non-smoking areas. In consideration of others, please refrain from cell phone
conversations during transport and participation in the activity.
