THOUGHTS FROM FR. DAN
On this Fourth Sunday of Advent we light a candle which will burn for only a short time. The vigil of Christmas begins after sundown
on Wednesday. With the lighting of this fourth candle, let us pray for perseverance, for the grace to be faithful in good times and in
bad, in season and out of season, as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ:
In the dark of night, Lord, give us perseverance...
In the dead of winter, Lord, give us perseverance...
In the heat of day, Lord, give us perseverance...
On the uphill side, Lord, give us perseverance...
When the odds are against us, Lord, give us perseverance...
When others have abandoned us, give us perseverance...
When we don't know the way, Lord, give us perseverance...
When we can't find your face, Lord, give us perseverance...
When our burdens seem too great, Lord, give us perseverance...
When we suffer for your name, Lord, give us perseverance...
When we hunger for your word, Lord, give us perseverance...
When we thirst for your joy, Lord, give us perseverance...
When our best efforts seem to be too little, give us perseverance...
When those around us have given up, give us perseverance...
When trust and hope unravel, Lord, give us perseverance...
When our faith wears thin, Lord, give us perseverance...
When we're confused and conflicted, give us perseverance...
When one more step seems just too much, Lord, give us perseverance...
In whatever our greatest difficulties might be,
give us perseverance, Lord...
Send your Spirit, Lord, to strengthen our hearts,
to give us new purpose, to stir up our faith,
to light our path, to show us the way and,
to give us perseverance, Lord... Come, Lord Jesus, come! Amen.
A Blessed, Joyful, Peaceful and Hopeful Christmas to you!
Religious Education News
We will not have Religious Education classes this Sunday (December 21st) or next Sunday (December 28th). We will return on the
Feast of the Epiphany, Sunday, January 4th. But until then we will be in communication with our families through e-mails and by
phone. Some of our Religious Education first graders will dress as shepherds and angels to join the SJA School first graders in the
Christmas Eve Pageant at the 4 PM Mass this coming Wednesday, and many of our RE families will attend either that Mass or the
other Masses on the 24th and 25th.
We want our RE families to experience the parish as their spiritual family, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus as part of a Holy Family,
nurtured and protected by his parents and raised in a community of people who knew him almost from birth. And even before his
birth, as Jesus grew in his mother’s womb, he was nestled within a family. In today’s Gospel (Luke 1:26-38) we hear the familiar
story of the Annunciation, when Mary is visited by the Angel Gabriel and agrees to be the Mother of our Savior. It is a touching,
memorable story, but we shouldn’t stop there: The verses after the Annunciation (Luke 1:39-56) follow Mary as she leaves her home
and goes to visit her older relative, Elizabeth, who is also expecting a child (and at an age beyond the usual parameters of pregnancy).
These two women ---one young; one old---seek each other’s comfort and support at this most miraculous by challenging times in their
lives. They do not isolate themselves, but reach out to those they love and who can understand the dilemmas and difficulties they face.
Last Sunday, at our workshop for Confirmation Candidates and their Sponsors, we used this text of the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth
to illustrate the cooperative and communal nature of our Catholic faith and the way we assist and support each other in the Sacramental Moments of our lives. Especially at this season of our Savior’s Birth, we encourage our families to visit us here at St. Joan of Arc,
and we rejoice in your coming, as Elizabeth and her growing baby rejoiced at the arrival of Mary and Jesus.

Fourth Sunday of Advent
SJA School News
GOOD-BY AND GOOD CHRISTMAS!
This is my last bulletin insert for St. Joan of Arc School. Mrs. Hampson will be back on January 5th from her maternity leave. It has
been a wonderful two months for me. The students here are so bright and kind; teachers here are so professional and helpful; and the
parents here are so generous with their time and talents. The time has gone by quickly: it’s been filled with field trips, programs,
special events, and mostly with learning. The academics are the most impressive thing about St. Joan of Arc. Being a Blue Ribbon
School is a validation of the rigor of the curriculum and the expertise of the teachers at St. Joan of Arc School.
My wish for you is not only a Merry Christmas but a Good Christmas. Think about what would make your Christmas Good. A Good
Christmas is not about the toys under the tree but about the people around the tree. Think about the people who will be with you
around your tree. At St. Joan of Arc the children add to the meaning of Christmas. They are the ones that make Christmas at St. Joan
of Arc School good. The many service projects that the children complete happily, the advent reconciliation that they participate in
reverently, the Christmas songs they sing joyously, the gifts/art projects that are made lovingly for parents with excitement and
anticipation—all these things made for a Good Christmas for me. I want to thank everyone who welcomed me.
If your child does not attend St. Joan of Arc School, now is the time to think about what this school can do for your child. Registration
will be coming up in January during Catholic Schools Week, January 25th to the 30th. Come to the two Open Houses planned for
Sunday, January 25th after the 10:30 family mass or come to see the classrooms in action on Friday, January 30th from 9:00 to 11:00.
The gift of a Catholic education is the most precious gift that can be under any Christmas tree. It is a gift that lasts a lifetime. Make
it a Good Christmas for your family by investing in your child’s future. The toys will come and go. The faith and values are for a
lifetime!
