Ava Sine Jr. Miss Dance of Ohio 2014 Carie Jurcak Carie grew up in Michigan where she trained under the direction of Joanne Zavisa as part of Dance Masters of America Chapter #46. In her time with Great Lakes Regional Dance Masters she was both regional Teen and Miss Dance. She then attended the University at Buffalo where she graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Honors College with a BFA in Dance. While at the University, Carie was a member of Zodiaque Dance Company, the university’s most prestigious performance company. During this time she performed works choreographed by John Lehrer, Tom Ralabate, Chanon Judson, Barbara Denny, and many more faculty and guest choreographers. Carie also danced and presented choreography in many venues throughout her college years. She performed as a featured tap dancer with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in their rendition of Funny Girl. Carie moved to NYC to pursue her dance career and was on Contemporary Faculty at Broadway Dance Center. She has taught BDC’s Absolute Beginner Workshop in Contemporary as well as teaching Master classes in improvisation. Carie collaborated with Victor Sho, a stepper and Hip Hop dancer, to create a fusion piece for BDC’s 2013 Student Showcase. She has been traveling the country teaching and judging for dance competitions and conventions, as well as visiting studios for workshops and Master classes. She has taught at regional and national competitions for DMA and DEA. Carie also has assisted Tom Ralabate, Larraine Susa, Karen Georger, Tressa Gorman-Crehan, and Michael Lambert at DMA’s SHIP program and TTS in Buffalo. Carie loves giving back to the dance world in which she grew up. Ying Lei Pham Petite Miss Dance of Ohio 2014 Denise Gillman Ms Gillman began her early training in Michigan with Marjorie B. Randazzo. She was the recipient of the Hammond Scholarship allowing her to continue as a full time student at the National Ballet School of Canada. Ms. Gillman is a frequent guest teacher in the US and Europe, including faculty positions at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School, Carnegie Mellon University, Louisville Ballet School, the International Summer School of the Cecchetti Council of America, and the Kate Simmons School in England. She is familiar with Balanchine technique and has trained in the Vaganova and RAD methods of teaching, although her teaching preference is the Cecchetti Method. Through many years of continued education, dedication and love of dance, Ms Gillman has achieved an associate diploma from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and her Cecchetti Diploma as a dancer and teacher. She is dedicated to the continuation of the art of ballet and ballet education. For the past 17 years, she has grown her dance studio into a many locations serving the Greater Louisville community. Gillman’s Dance Academy is also home to the MAGIC, Inc. a youth dance company founded by Ms. Gillman and community members who are invested in the non profit, MAGIC – Making Art Grow in Children. Richard Ashworth Pizza Party Congratulations to Our Winners Richard Ashworth (Chicago, IL) is an internationally recognized teacher, choreographer, and performer whose technical abilities and historical knowledge have made him a sought after resource in the urban and rhythmic dance communities. Richard attended the University at Buffalo receiving a BFA in dance in June 2007. During his time at UB, Richard performed and choreographed for the university’s Zodiaque Dance Company under Tom Ralabate as well as the Zodiaque Studio Ensemble and Young Choreographers Showcases. He has apprenticed the Lehrerdance Company, was a guest principle of the Configurations Dance Theatre and has performed with the Pick of the Crop dance company. He has also established himself as a teacher, joining the faculty of several dance education organizations including DMA, CNADM and the Interdanza organization of Mexico. Richard also participates in international hip hop battles and has professionally busked (street performed) on street corners around the world. Rich currently acts as rehearsal director for Mark Yonally’s Chicago Tap Theatre and freelances as a performer/choreographer throughout the Chicagoland Area. He has choreographed and performed for Chicago Dance Crash, Second City Chicago’s e.t.c. stage, and Hope College’s Insync Dance Theater. By joining Chapter 16 as an adult member, you automatically become a member of DMA, and you are required to take an examination. You are also required to take an Oath of Obligation and must adhere to the Principles and Code of Ethics of the organization. Those who are 18 years of age or over and have taught for 3 years and can pass the required examinations become a member of ODM & DMA and certificates will be awarded.
