Keeping Healthy for the Holidays
By the first of December, the holiday season is already
well underway. It’s a season of feasts and parties,
tempting desserts, and freely flowing drinks. Combine
this steady eating with harsh and discouraging
weather, and it is not uncommon to suddenly pack on
a few extra pounds. Fortunately, there are ways to both
enjoy the holidays and stay fit well into the new year.
Despite our best intentions to eat light, it is near
impossible to resist a full holiday table with all the
trimmings. The trick is not to “save” your appetite before
the big meal. Don’t skip breakfast and lunch. Instead,
have four to six mini-meals throughout the day to
sustain your metabolism and keep burning calories.
Then you will be less likely to overeat.
To increase a feeling of fullness and reduce your
appetite, eat water-based foods that are low in calories,
such as brothy soups, fruits, and vegetables. Also,
when dinner arrives, eat slowly. It takes at least 20
minutes for your stomach to signal to your brain that it
is full.
Invited to a holiday potluck? Volunteer to bring a
healthy dish. Do you enjoy preparing the same
traditional family recipes year after year? You can
modify the recipes with new ingredients. Substitute
applesauce for cooking oil or make stuffing with whole
wheat bread rather than white.
Maintaining an exercise routine may be the most
important factor in staying fit. Make a point of
exercising before the big meal or holiday party. Often
you can even find holiday-themed community events
like Turkey Trots or Jingle Jogs. Traveling? Include
exercising in your travel plans. And if the weather
outside is frightful, move your routine indoors, perhaps
even trying new workouts such as stationary bikes,
yoga, or volleyball.

From the Maintenance Desk……
Winter is just around the corner
and you know what that
means……snow and more
snow. We are asking that all
residents who drive, and staff
members who park in the parking lot, please
do not park over the curbs with the front end of
your car. We need to get the tractors down the
sidewalks to clear the snow.
Also, for those residents who park in the
handicap spots and who will not be driving this
winter, would you please move your vehicles
farther out so that those residents and visitors
who drive, who may need those designated
spots, will have a place to park?
Thank you for your cooperation in this manner.

A Visit from Christ
During the Christmas season, most of us are so
distracted by the commercialization of Christmas,
that we forget about the much more important visit
from God, who miraculously entered the world as
a helpless infant over 2, 000 years ago. This
miraculous “visit” lasted over 30 years as our Lord
walked on the earth loving, teaching, and healing
many people. Ultimately, Jesus gave up his life in
order to offer salvation for those who want to live
their life for him. This is the greatest gift man
could ever receive.
The following is a different take on the classic
poem “Twas the Night before Christmas” which
was written by Clement Clarke Moore.
Twas the night before Christmas,
and all through the earth, every
creature was stirring, awaiting a
birth. The time for Messiah was
certainly near, the prophets
foretold it; the Bible was clear.
From the book of beginnings, the very first sin,
God’s word made it clear how His grace entered
in. Born of virgin, He’d come as a man. The
Creator among us, the time was at hand. The stars
were arranged to show marvelous things, setting
Wise Men to journey and find the true King.
Shepherds in Bethlehem gazed on the sky,
longing to see Him, their Lord the Most High. How
could they know that the very next night an angel
of God would speak words of delight? How the
Savior was born, it was news of great joy. In a
cloth and a manger they’d find the dear boy. And
a heavenly host would soon join to sing of the
glory of God and of wonderful things.
He entered creation, set position aside, to show us
how deeply his love did abide. Sin sent us away
from our almighty Lord. He became one of us that
we might be restored.
He’s the Prince of Peace; He’s the one who
makes whole. He is Wisdom Incarnate, a
Shepherd of Souls. He’s the Author of Life; He’s
the Ruler of All.
He can offer salvation, on His
name we call. The shepherds
and Wise Men would bow to
adore, Holy God among men,
our Greatest reward.
All glory and honor is due to this King. Let’s all
join in worship; let every tongue sing. Jesus is
Lord, all creation proclaims. He’s the first and
last, He is always the same.
History turned on the first Christmas day, when
God became man in a humble display. As we
think of the manger in which He was laid, let
our hearts welcome Him to the world He made!

Matthew 1: 21
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt
call his name JESUS: for he shall save his
people from their sins.
Matthew 1:11
And when they were come into the house, they
saw the young child with Mary his mother, and
fell down, and worshipped him:
Luke 2:10 - 14
And the angel said unto them, Fear not, for,
behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy,
which shall be to all people. For unto you is
born this day in the city of David a Saviour,
which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a
sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped
in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And
suddenly there was with the angel a multitude
of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth
peace, good will towards man.
