EVENT NOTES


All paddles start at 10am unless otherwise stated
Waterways licences are required on inland rivers and canals within England (these are relatively inexpensive; further advice
below)
Please ensure you understand the trip definitions and the expectation of you and a member of the group (refer to definitions
below)
It is important the Organiser of each trip knows you are intending to attend, otherwise they may leave without you, or decide a
slight change in plan due to weather or water conditions.
The easiest way to book yourself on to an event is by completing the online booking form, found here
http://www.piratescanoeclub.com/events_booking.html
Peer-peer paddles may be coordinated directly by email, text or phone as these are more relaxed
Please note that if you are a non member i.e. you have not paid the annual membership fee (due by end of April), the cost for
each and every organised paddles will be £10.
PLEASE TELEPHONE THE EVENT ORGANISER FOR MORE DETAILS OR TO ADVISE OF YOUR
ATTENDANCE AND KIT REQUIREMENTS DETAILS AT THE END OF THIS PROGRAMME
EVENTS GUIDE
If you’re considering joining a trip it’s important you understand what type of trip it is - this is so you know what is expected of you,
what level of support and guidance you can expect from others and ultimately so you can judge if the trip is of a type suitable for your
level of experience and skills.

Coached trips
1) Informal events – identified in red
These events offer the least level of organisation - the event organiser will help get everyone in the same place at the same time. They
will not do any trip planning or provide any direction or focus on the water. An example of this would be someone booking a campsite
by a beach with the intention of going sea kayaking/pub accommodation near a river/canal etc, but leaving the kayaking side of things
for individuals to sort out when they get there. Anyone can organise such an event. Social events and meetings are also classified as
Informal events.
2) Peer trips – identified in blue
Peer trips mean that everyone takes full responsibility for themselves, their safety and their kit, while behaving in a responsible way that
does not put other members of the group at risk. Nobody takes overall responsibility for the safety or wellbeing of the group, because
the experience and skill level is expected to be similar – you are paddling with a group of peers. Group members are expected to look
out for each other, while staying within their own limitations, but there is no onus to support anyone else if you do not feel confident
doing so in any given situation.
Club equipment can be borrowed but arrangements for transportation of this must be made by the individual.
There will be a ‘trip organiser’, their role is to organise the logistics for the trip to help get everyone in the right place at the right time.
They will also suggest the route of the trip. But to reiterate, they are not leading or taking responsibility for the group.
Those going on trips must expect to take part in making it happen and contribute to decisions that need making as part of the trip (e.g.
is the suggested route sensible? Is it safe to go on/should the group turn back?). Participants can not expect others to make decisions
for them or on behalf of the group.
Who can organise a peer trip? In theory anyone who has completed the BCU 3* training. However, people will need to be aware of
their limitations. People must not be organising trips on water types or grades they have little or no experience of.
3) Leader guided trips – identified in green
Unlike ‘peer trips’ one person will lead the group and, within reason, take responsibility for the group. A leader must have a relevant
leader qualification (e.g. BCU 4*), except in specific circumstances (see below).
Leaders will be able to discuss with and advise individuals if the trip will be suitable for them. These types of trips are good for people
with no or little experience of planning trips, limited paddling experience, or those who wish to push their limits under the guidance of
the leader.
Certain 3* paddlers may be sanctioned by the PCC Committee to lead trips in a limited range of circumstances where the risks are
considered to be low. Each leader must be approved by the committee.
4) Coached trips – identified in yellow
Hints and tips can be picked up from peers and leaders on any type of trip and time may be set aside for practising skills. However,
some trips may be organised to coach specific skills. Particular qualifications are needed to lead/coach such trips. If there is a need for
these they could run in conjunction with the Coaching Officer.
Waterways Licence
Paddlers using their own/borrowed boats on the river require a waterways licence to allow them to paddle rivers and canals in England.
Fines can be imposed by the river authorities much in the same way as fishing. You can obtain a waterways licence by joining Canoe
England. Details can be found at the Canoe England website http://www.canoe-england.org.uk/membership/waterways-licences/ Canoe
England members are provided with a membership card which also serves as the waterways licence. A lanyard is also provided for ease
of display. As a general guide a waterways licence is not required on tidal estuaries and coastal locations though you should always
check local requirements.
The club maintains around 20 waterway licences for specified club boats which are used in coached sessions as part of the clubs BCU
affiliation. If a member borrows a boat from the club it is recommended that they hold their own waterways licence in case a waterways
licence has not been attached to the selected boat. However please discuss with the organiser.
Pool Sessions/Polo Training
This occurs every Monday evening (except bank Holidays) at Kingswood Pool, Ashford (the old
Police Training College by Bybrook Barn). Places are limited and fill quickly so please contact
George Dunn if you wish to attend.
Equipment can be provided upon request.
