Statement:
It is a great honor to be nominated to serve on the executive committee
of the IMU as a member-at-large. The program to promote international
cooperation in mathematics is one of central importance to me. With
all of the national conflicts today, mathematics serves as a universal language around which we can all unite. The breadth of exciting topics
which will be discussed at the ICM in Seoul provides a clear demonstration of this.
I have been impressed with the work of the CDC in furthering opportunities for students in developing countries. This is a particular strength of
the IMU. If elected to the executive committee, I would look forward to
working with these programs, to strengthen mathematics worldwide. As
a member of the National Academy of Sciences, I would work to coordinate these efforts with existing American initiatives. Finally, the IMU is
a member of the International Council for Science (ICSU). I would look
forward to promoting our involvement in the initiatives of that organization. Mathematics permeates the world of science, and I look forward
to promoting both the freedom and responsibilities of mathematics and
science globally.
Thank you.
