Tracking Down the
Bushrangers
9 Day Luxury Coach Tour - D e pa rts 6 th Ma rch 2 0 1 5
Itinerary:
There is no better way to understand the bushranger’s stories than to go out and see for yourself; feel
the excitement and adventure where it all happened. All you need is our Stonestreets Coach and
your imagination to take yourself back to those daring and dangerous bushranging days - free from
the worry of being bailed up on the highway too!
Day 1
Toowoomba to Uralla
(Meals D)
Depart Toowoomba at 7:00am to travel south via the New England Hwy to our ‘smoko’ break
at Wallangarra. Adjust watches to Daylight Saving time here! Our first encounter with bushrangers
will be at Thunderbolt’s Hideout near Tenterfield. Thunderbolt pillaged many travellers in the regions
we will be travelling through today, and met a fateful end near Uralla. Learn all about Captain Thunderbolt during an
interesting visit to McCrossin’s Mill!
Day 2
Uralla to Dubbo
(Meals BLD)
A little to the south of Uralla stands a rock formation used by and named after Captain Thunderbolt. It was near this
formation in nearby Kentucky Creek that Thunderbolt met his untimely end. Continuing through Tamworth, we’ll stop for
lunch at the Premer Hotel then travel through Dunedoo in to Dubbo for an overnight stay.
Day 3
Dubbo to Young
(Meals BD)
Day 4
Young to Junee
(Meals BLD)
Day 5
Junee to Beechworth
(Meals BLD)
Day 6
Beechworth and Surrounds
(Meals BLD)
Day 7
Beechworth to Melbourne
(Meals BLD)
The next bushranger to feature on this tour is Frank Gardner. Frank is renowned with his gang, for instigating Australia’s
largest gold robbery back in 1862. We’ll visit Escort Rock, near Eugowra, where this robbery took place. One of the
members of Frank Gardner’s gang was a young fellow named Ben Hall. We’ll track down Ben Hall to where he was
eventually shot near Forbes before being laid to rest in the Forbes cemetery. Spend the rest of the day tracking down
another member of Gardner’s gang, Johnny Gilbert taking a rest in Young for the night.
Today we’ll continue to track down Johnny Gilbert. Travelling from Young we’ll head east to Binalong - that’s as far as
young Johnny made it before being shot. He is buried in the old Police Paddock just outside of the town. Our journey
now takes a southern turn toward the ‘dog on the tuckerbox’ at Gundagai then into the old rail town of Junee. This is a
fantastic place for any sweet tooth as it houses the Junee Chocolate and Liquorice Factory. Following dinner tonight,
brace yourself for a ghostly encounter at Monte Cristo Homestead.
Watch out today for the tracks of Mad Dan Morgan! He was notorious down this way. In fact poor old Sergeant Thomas
Smyth came off second best when he had an encounter with Dan near Henty. We’ll try and locate his grave today. This
afternoon we will start to discover the tracks of Australia’s most infamous bushranger, Ned Kelly in Jerilderie. This is the town
that the Kelly Gang held up. Walk in the steps of the Kelly Gang and see where they held more than 30 hostages while
shouting the bar! Then it’s away to the Victorian village of Beechworth for a two night rest.
More history on the Kelly gang will be uncovered today while exploring the village of Beechworth. Ned Kelly had many
links to Beechworth – he spent time in HM Prison Beechworth and fought a famous boxing bout with Isaiah “Wild” Wright ,
in the back of a local hotel. Travel to Wangaratta and enjoy lunch at the historic Vine Hotel. Legend has it that Ned Kelly
used to hide here, using the tunnel beneath as his escape route. Watch out for Lazy Harry during today’s adventure.
Call into Glenrowan and see the town where Ned Kelly made his last stand. There’s a huge statue of Ned in the main
street. Visit Benalla then Euroa, more towns frequented by the Kelly Gang. See the bank in Euroa which the Kelly gang
held up before driving south to Melbourne for the night.

(Meals BD)
Day 9
Melbourne to Home
(Meals B)
Melbourne is the last place we’ll visit during this tour - it’s also the place where Ned Kelly would spend his last days. Visit
the Old Melbourne Gaol and stand in the cell which housed Australia’s most notorious bushranger. See the gallows where
Ned uttered his final words, “‘Ah well, I suppose it has come to this’ or ‘Such is life’ depending on which version of the story
you’ve heard. Finally a visit to the Victorian Police Museum will complete this tour spent Tracking Down the Bushrangers.
Following breakfast and a transfer to the Melbourne Airport, sit back and relax on your flight back home!
