The Wingfield Society
The international ‘Wingfield Family Society” was founded in Ashland,
Virginia, in May 1987. There had been local and regional Wingfield family
organizations in the past, but this was the first international society
encompassing all members including now in the United States, Canada,
England, Ireland, Australia, France and Costa Rica, and previously in Wales,
New Zealand and Italy.
Wingfield Family History
All Wingfields are believed to be descended from either the prominent
Saxon family that lived in Suffolk, England both before and at the time of
William the Conqueror (in England 1066-d.1087), or the landowning family
that lived near North Wingfield and South Wingfield in Derbyshire, England
(about 130 miles northwesterly of London) in about 1295. Both Wingfield
families had coats of arms.
Two sisters of Queen Elizabeth Woodville, the wife of Edward IV,
married Wingfields. The Wingfield family included many knights, Knights of
the Garter and such as well as counselors, comptrollers, courtiers, ladies in
waiting and similar others at the courts of Kings Edward II, III, and IV, King
Henry VIII, the courts of Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth I and others.
Wingfield migration to America began significantly in
1621. Larger numbers then came in the following years.
The 1692 earthquake at Port Royal, Jamaica,
to which many
had migrated, took the lives of some Wingfields. From
about 1820, emigration to Australia led to an
outpouring of
Wingfields to other shores.
Presently the best known Wingfields are
Captain Edward Maria Wingfield (right), Major Walter Clopton
Wingfield (left) and Henry Colsell Wingfield.
’EMW’ was a Virginia founding father and the first president of
Jamestown in 1607-the first successful English-speaking
colony in the ‘New World’, 13 years before the arrival of the
Mayflower.
 Major Walter Clopton Wingfield was the inventor, patentee, and
marketer of international lawn tennis, with name connections currently
at Wimbledon, England, and as a member of the International Tennis
Hall of Fame.
 Henry Colsell Wingfield, a London attorney, was big on sculling boat
races on the River Thames. In 1830 he established the “Wingfield
Sculls” as a men’s annual championship race. Lately it progressed to
include the “Women’s Wingfields,” both now held every August with
provision for WFS observers.
