Gangtok, Jan 8: Sikkim boy
Chewang Lama has been selected by Buddh International Circuit (BIC) to undergo
training in car racing in New
Delhi.
If the training goes well
Chewang could be selected
for this year’s Polo R Cup
tournament. He is already in
touch with the organizers,
Volkswagen Motorsport.
What impressed BIC officials and trainers was the
manner in which Chewang
performed during his training session. Doing a lap timing of 2.44 flat at BIC is something unusual for a guy who
had no formal training. He
drove like a pro and this
stunned BIC officials.
Chewang is currently under training at BIC (Delhi),
the only Formula1 track in
India, under the guidance of
Anmol Rampal, who is a proracer and test driver for Honda, Mahindra etc to foreign
companies s like Mercedes,
BMW etc.
The BIC is an Indian motor racing circuit in Greater
Noida near Delhi.
The circuit is best known
as the venue for the annual
Formula One Indian Grand
Prix, which was first hosted
on October, 30, 2011.
Selection for Polo R Cup
2015 is likely to take place in
February-March this year
and going by his current performance Chewang’s chances are high. "This guy can
do wonders,” is what his
coach had to say when
asked for a feedback.
The organizers saw at
least 20,000 spectators turn
up for the event last year and
are hoping to increase that
number this year. The champion of the season this year

among the Bengali populace. The investment is
poised to boost local tourism in the coastline as well.
"There's so many," Banerjee said highlighting the
potential in the tourism
segment.
Banerjee said special emphasis was being given to
cultural tourism, heritage
tourism and homestay tourism to boost the eco-tourism sector.
She also said special focus will be laid on maintaining an inclusive transparent process throughout the

sustainability.
She said the Mayfair
Group has also committed
Rs.1,200 crore in the state
and another Rs.15,000 crore
commitment has been
placed for smart cities.
She said tourism was being developed under the
public-private partnership
(PPP) model in Gajoldoba,
Jharkhali, Sabujdwip.
New eco-tourism parks,
lodges adventure sports
and other projects were being undertaken. Tourism
parks were being created in
Saili, Kunjanagar and Jaldapara.
A tourist lodge was also
being constructed in Jhargram Rajbari under PPP
model. With the central
shipping ministry approving Rs.12,000 crore investment for the deep sea port
in the Sagar islands, the
area is poised to evolve as
a tourism hot-spot.
The state has approved
creation of three new beaches named Dheusagar, Rupsagar and Bhorsagar near
the proposed port.

“Car racing has been a passion, a dream since childhood,” says Chewang.
His turning point was
when he did the Chennai's
kart track in 20.50 sec without any prior experience. It
was his first race in a proper track. The record of the
track, set by a professional
race car driver, stands at 19
sec.
Chewang also recently
attended Raymond Banerjee's race session in Pune,
where he impressed the officials as well as the owner.

Kolkata, Jan 8: Bengal Governor K.N. Tripathi Thursday
said a section of Jadavpur
University students who began an indefinite fast three
days ago should end their
hunger strike.
"Who will stop them from
putting an end to their hunger strike? They should feel
proud of that university and
they should discontinue
their hunger strike," Tripathi
told the media here.
A section of the varsity's
students launched a fastunto-death late Monday
night to press for the removal of vice chancellor Abhijit
Chakrabarti. They rejected
the registrar's appeal to ini-
tiate a discussion Tuesday.
As many as 11 students
began the hunger strike at 10
p.m. Monday in front of the
administrative building.
They covered themselves
with blankets, camping out
in the wintry night.
Meanwhile, state Education Minister Partha Chatterjee has called a meeting Jan 9
with representatives from the
university's students community and authorities to resolve the ongoing impasse.
The students have been
clamouring for Chakrabarti's
removal since Sep 17 when
the university authorities ordered a police crackdown on
a sit-in by students who were
demanding an independent
investigation into the alleged
molestation of a female student inside a hostel.
The incident triggered
protest rallies in the city and
had a ripple effect across the
country, with college alumni
organising protest marches
in Delhi and Mumbai. Many
students also boycotted the
59th annual convocation of
the university in December
last year. The agitation
brought together the Kolkata diaspora and university
alumni in solidarity through
social networking websites.
Amid the clamour for his
removal, Chakrabarti, who
was the interim vice chancellor, was given full time responsibility by Governor Tripathi, who is the ex-officio
chancellor. The state government later instituted a fivemember probe panel headed
by University of Calcutta
vice chancellor Suranjan Das
