MINUTES
Wednesday, November 19, 2014
Fairview Park City Hall, 20777 Lorain Road
1. CALL TO ORDER & ATTENDANCE
The meeting was called to order at 7:10 PM.
Members present included Matt Hrubey, Angie DeRosa, and Joyce O’Malley. Mary Alice
Mastrovito was also in attendance.
2. REVIEW & APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Angie motioned to approve the minutes of the September 17, 2014 Green Team meeting without
revision. Joyce seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
3. REPORTS
•
Rocky River Watershed Council Quarterly Meeting – October 22, 2014: The meeting
at Bain Park Cabin was well received by those Green Team members in attendance. The
Green Team is now officially recognized as the “Coe Creek Stream Team.”
•
Coe Creek Tree Planting – November 1, 2014: The tree planting was slow going due to
rain. Approximately 75 of 200 trees were planted. The remaining trees are being housed
at Morton Park’s splash pad. The weather has made the planting of the remaining trees
difficult. At this time, a final decision about whether to plant, store, or return the
remaining trees has yet to be made.
4. BUSINESS TO DISCUSS
•
Winterfest 2014 – November 28, 2014: Present members worked to prep empty milk
jugs to use as luminaries at Winterfest. The zero waste component of Winterfest is not
happening due to time constraints. That undertaking would need to be started several
months before an event. Matt reported that Colleen Sliwinski’s environmental science
students will be manning a booth at Winterfest. They will prepare some sort of craft using
recycled materials. The booth will be co-branded and include a sign that the Green Team
is responsible for the luminaries. The Recreation Department will be providing the sand
for the luminaries. Candles are the only remaining item needed.

•
Ohio Environmental Education Fund: This topic was tabled due to low attendance.
There will not be enough time to prepare a grant application for the January 15, 2015
deadline.
•
Branding Efforts: A decision was made to simplify the process of branding ourselves
with t-shirts and other merchandise. Matt will get an apples-to-apples cost comparison of
Hometown Threads and EmbroidMe in North Olmsted. Whichever vendor is less
expensive will get our account. Matt will contact Sam for an update on the new Green
Team logo.
•
Simple Recycling: Bridget Schmitz volunteered to lead the fact finding as we consider
whether to suggest bringing Simple Recycling to Fairview Park. This topic was tabled
due to Bridget’s absence.
•
Bicycle Policy: This topic was tabled due to low attendance.
•
Green Recognition Programs: This topic was tabled due to low attendance.
•
Coe Creek Walkabout – Water Quality Inventory: In the spring, the Green Team will
perform a walkabout of Coe Creek to determine any issues impeding its health. In the
interim, Matt is working with various organizations including the Cuyahoga Soil &
Water Conservation District, West Creek Conservancy, and Rocky River Watershed
Council to assemble a proposal and financing to remove a culvert located in Coe Creek
behind the West Valley Medical Building on Lorain Road. The culvert was installed in
the 1960’s for a road that would have connected Lorain to the Valley Forge
neighborhood. The road was never built and now the culvert is starting to deteriorate.
5. ROUNDTABLE ANNOUNCEMENTS
•
Matt reported that he has been named to the Board of Trustees of the Rocky River
Watershed Council.
6. ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 7:42 PM.
