Pre-milking teat disinfection as part of the pre milking routine has increased in popularity due to the positive impact it has had on milk yield, milk let down, bactoscan results and new infection rates. Milk producers using proven pre-milking disinfection can expect to see lactation yields increase by 500kg per cow - typically adding around £120 per cow per year to the bottom line. POST-MILKING TEAT DISINFECTION Teat disinfection immediately after every milking is a vital part of any mastitis control plan. More than 50% of new udder infections can be prevented by proper teat disinfection practice using an effective product with efficacy against the major mastitis pathogens. However, it is important to appreciate that existing udder infections cannot be treated by teat disinfection. Existing infections are best eliminated by dry cow treatment and culling chronically infected cows. Pre-milking teat disinfection cleans soiled teats leaving them free from key mastitis causing pathogens such as Strep uberis and coliforms. In one recent study, the use of premilking disinfection reduced Strep uberis new infection rates by 66% and has also been shown to be more effective at reducing bacterial numbers on teats when compared to dry wiping! Effective application Research suggests this cleaning process also helps stimulate milk flow and increases the milk let-down reflex with an additional benefit seen when units are applied 60-90 seconds after the teats are first touched. Follow recommended usage and storage instructions and make sure disinfectant cups are emptied fully and cleaned as part of the routine wash-up after each milking. Never pour disinfectant back into the original container. Pre-milking teat disinfection can also help improve the keeping quality and flavour of the milk by reducing the number of bacteria resistant to the pasteurisation process. Post-milking teat disinfectants can be applied either by dipping or spraying. Both methods are acceptable provided the disinfectant being used entirely covers all four teats. This range of highly effective alkaline cleaning chemicals has been designed to offer ultimate performance to ensure the production of high quality milk when using all types of milking machines. Our formulations are effective in the removal of fat and protein deposits whilst leaving surfaces free from bacteria. The range consists of liquid and powder cleaners ensuring a choice of versatile products to the end user. An effective cleaning system will remove milk fats, proteins, sugar and minerals that combine with hard water deposits to form deposits on the internal and external surfaces of milking equipment. The internal deposits are removed by circulation cleaning of the milking equipment after each milking using either an alkali or acid-based cleaning chemical. These chemicals have very specific effects and are best used in hot water and then followed by a separate disinfectant process in the final rinse stage. After the end of milking, clean water is used to rinse away any milk residues that are left. This solution is then run to waste and is followed by a final rinse containing a disinfectant containing either sodium hypochlorite or peracetic acid. They often contain a combination of chemicals, a caustic cleaner to dissolve fat and protein and a chlorine component to help specifically control protein deposits and to disinfect. Acid products are effective against milkstone deposits (the combination of minerals in milk and water) and work by dissolving minerals and holding them in solution until the wash solution is discarded. They often contain either phosphoric, sulphuric or nitric acid, although phosphoric acid tends to be most commonly used due to its non-aggressive effect on stainless steel equipment and plastics. Application of disinfectant may be via automatic cluster flush equipment, hand held sprayers or manual disinfection methods. Solution strength should ideally be 0.5% (500ml to 100 litres water). Peracetic acid can also be used for final rinsing of milking equipment and bulk tanks especially when Thermoduric bacteria have been found in milk samples. These bacteria can lead to high bactoscan results, can cause milk spoilage and reduce the shelf life of milk leading to reduced hygiene payments from milk buyers. CLEANLINE CLUSTERFLUSH High performance peracetic acid based sanitiser for use in clusters and final rinse. • Broad spectrum disinfectant for cluster disinfection • Suitable for use in the final rinse • Can be used in automated equipment Sizes available: • 25 litre - Code 5839 • 200 litre - Code 5840 • 1,000 litre - Code 5841 Call us on 0808 178 1010 or visit www.progiene-dairy.com 17 HOOFCARE 18 THE BENEFITS OF FOOT BATHING Unhygienic underfoot conditions are a major cause of debilitating and costly hoof infections. However, daily foot bathing using an effective disinfectant alongside mobility scoring, foot trimming and sound record keeping will go a long way to reducing the impact of lameness problems. However, footbaths must be located correctly - ideally on the exit race of the parlour and situated to allow one full row of the parlour to queue. Footbaths need to be long enough to allow two cow strides (usually between 2.4 and 3m) and contain sufficient depth of foobath solution. They should also be emptied regularly to avoid cows walking through contaminated solutions that do more harm than good. Choice of disinfectant Use a disinfectant that is robust and effective in high organic loads. A 5% dilution of formalin is recommended and at least one litre of the solution should be made available for each cow. FORMALIN 38:10 Stabilised formalin solution for footbathing cattle and sheep. Sizes available: • 25kg (500 cows) - Code 5836 • 200kg (4,000 cows) - Code 5837 • 1,000kg (20,000 cows) - Code 5838 On average, more than half the cows in some herds could experience lameness problems in any single twelve-month period. Around one quarter of all dairy cows may be experiencing some degree of lameness at any one time. Lameness is likely to have a large impact on a cow’s performance in terms of yield, fertility and longevity. This can lead to significant financial losses. To help optimise the performance of your footbathing regime and help reduce infections related to lameness, the recommendation is to footbath at least three times a week and preferably daily with a 5% formalin solution.
