THEOPHANY
Theophany: A theological term used to refer to either a visible or auditory
manifestation of God. Visible manifestations include an angel appearance in human form
(Judges 13); a flame in the burning bush (Exodus 3: 2-6); or fire, smoke, and thunder on
Mount Sinai (Exodus 19:18-20). Auditory manifestations include the voice of God in the
garden (Genesis 3:8), the still small voice to Elijah (1 Kings 19:12ff.), or the voice from
heaven at the baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3: 17). (Evangelical Dictionary of Theology, Walter A. Elwell, Editor.
Baker book house, Grand Rapids, Michigan. 1984)
A new year will soon be upon us and with it a closing of the books on Christmas,
2014 (at least is seems to go that way). Kitchens don’t have that cookie smell and
Christmas stuff has been boxed up and stored away for another year. It seems so long ago
that we heard, “Behold I bring you good tidings of great joy that will be for all people. For
unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior who is Christ the Lord”. Those words
constitute a theophany and except for Epiphany, January seems to be strangely absent of
“God Speak”. Why is that?
Are we too quick to resume our routines? Do we wash off Christmas Eve and
Christmas day with a shower? I will grant you that schedules and responsibilities make it
difficult to hold on to the candle light of silent night, holy night. But manifestations of God
should not be relegated to the reading of particular biblical texts when they come up in the
church calendar year. After Christmas we are not listening to the voice of God as we should,
nor are we looking for a divine intrusion; we are looking and thinking much too horizontally.
That’s what happens when our needs take center stage.
The Bible tells us that the voice of God was “rarely heard” when the people chose a
myopic path apart from God. Though I am neither a social scientist nor cultural historian, I
see us moving into that same kind of dangerous place. I pray that in this New Year we first
look up and then look around. When I look at thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the
moon and the stars which thou hast established; what is man that thou art mindful of him,
and the son of man that thou does care for him? (Psalm 8) If we can begin our day with
those words, we may be able to greet a theophany which will guide and help us along the
New Year. Something to think about and perhaps strive for.
Shalom
Pastor Tim

** We are in the process of getting a quote
December was busy with Christmas Program practice and the performance.
Rebekah Loew was our director and she adapted a play called “To You is Born” to fit
our youth program. The confirmation students also had acting parts, as did Rebekah.
On the 14th the program was successfully shared with the congregation. Thanks to
everyone for diligently memorizing their lines and participating in the play. You did a
great job! Special thanks to Cindy Hawkinson for directing the music and to Jay
Pounds for being our last minute narrator.
On the 17th, Y.E.S. will have had their Christmas party with our special guests- the
Y.E.S. buddies. Our next “Buddy Night” will be on January 14th. We will be
creating gingerbread houses that represent each month of the year. These houses will
be on display during that night’s “Birthday Potluck”. A special lesson during Y.E.S.
will have the theme of birthdays, as well.
If you are planning on attending January’s “Birthday Potluck”, there will be a signup sheet in Fellowship Hall starting Jan. 4th. The sign-up sheet is to let us know which
birthday months will be represented by our participants, and will help us in planning
some special potluck activities. Curious? Be sure to join us at 5:30 pm on
Wednesday, January 14th.
When Y.E.S. resumes on January 7th, we will be continuing our Bible lessons on the
life of Moses as he leads the Israelites through the Wilderness. In addition, we will
need new treat providers for the New Year. There is a sign-up sheet, if you are
interested. The treats can be dropped off any time before your chosen Wednesday;
you do not need to serve the treats.
