Why do we need standard emergency codes?
Patient safety is at the center of creating standard emergency codes. With more of our staff and
physicians traveling among Inova hospitals, they need to know what code is being called. One
standard emergency code system reduces confusion and improves response time.
Can hospitals customize these codes?
No. These codes, as published in the policy, are the only approved codes to use.
How will new codes be added?
Any additional codes will be reviewed and approved by the Inova Disaster Strategy Committee
and Executive Leadership.

Why does the internal emergency phone extension need to be the same throughout Inova
hospitals and emergency care centers?
A consistent internal emergency phone extension reduces confusion and improves response time.
As one Inova, we have more employees traveling among the hospitals and we need to be
consistent.
When do I use the 5555 number?
At each Inova hospital, the internal 5555 number is answered by the hospital operator who will
announce the proper emergency code. For the ECC and HealthPlex, the number is being
answered by a designated person within the facility.
I have a plastic card I carry with my employee badge that provides emergency phone
numbers. Will I get a new one?
Yes. Each hospital’s Emergency Management Coordinator is managing the ordering and
distribution of cards at each facility.
Why does IFH have two different numbers listed on the above chart?
Due to heavy call volumes, IFH has two separate emergency telephone numbers – one for
clinical emergencies (5555) and the other for general security emergencies (4911).
What if the old number at any of the locations is used?
If any of the old emergency extensions are used, the phone will roll over to the 5555 extension.
Please begin using the 5555 number, however, so it can become the standard.
What if a clinical emergency is called into the security line at IFH?
Safety & Security as well as the hospital operator will forward to the proper line.
What phone number do System Office locations use?
Any facility other than a hospital or ECC should follow the current internal procedure that is
established for that location.
