From the Senior Pastor
Welcome to 2015
by Stefan Potuznik
Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. (Romans 15;7)
As a new American Citizen, I feel welcome to call America my new home. It is the people, it is my family, and you
who make me feel welcome. I spoke my Pledge of Allegiance on December 11th in the auditorium of the Department of
Homeland Security building in Chicago. Along with a 109 people from 39 countries, I was not the only one who felt
welcomed. Each person felt welcomed and made a conscious choice to call America their new home. We feel welcomed
to pursue our dreams, hopes, and aspirations for our lives. It is a big deal to leave a home country, a place of birth, behind
and begin new in a place first unfamiliar. America is a place that started out accepting people from many different places
of the world. America was - and is - a country of welcome for people from different countries of origin and it gives people
the freedom to express their beliefs. Wherever genuine welcome takes place, life develops and people feel they can pursue
their dreams.
Each New Year is a chance to begin anew. We are encouraged to try
something new or to resolve issues we bring from the old year into the
New Year. In an environment of welcome, we are able to be creative and
to take risks in trying something new. You are welcome to work on
relationships, on personal issues, to grow in your faith.
The biblical watch word of the year 2015 is “Welcome one another,
therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.”
Welcome is essential for our life together in this world. When a
person feels welcomed, he or she feels safe to learn, grow, and to strive.
We live in a world where people are not always welcoming of one
another because of various reasons. God’s message of welcome is quite
radical and very inclusive. Think about God who came through his son
into our world to welcome us who are sinners and who live by our own drumbeat. Because of God’s unconditional
acceptance, we are able to welcome others as well. My hope and prayer for this New Year of 2015 is that we all practice
and grow in our acceptance as a congregation and as individuals. Our Mission Appeal theme is Sharing His Love with all
people. We are planning to grow our youth and high school ministry and add days to our Caring Place Ministry. In addition
we will identify more outreach opportunities. Thank you for your support of our Mission Appeal. Every gift and

commitment is a blessing. May you all experience, in each day of this New Year, God’s welcoming in your life and the joy
of making others feel welcome, too. All this we do for the glory of God.
God bless you richly in the Year 2015!
Deacons’ Bench
Holiday Letters
by Parish Deacon Hank Kwiatkowski
Another in the series of encouraging you to write a letter to some distant friend or family member!
Christmas was an opportune time to contact your past friends and family. If you let that slip by, you have another great
chance to make contact…it is the New Year!!
Wow!! Another year has slipped by. They seem to go quicker and quicker as we get a little bit older! Some of our
friends and family have also gone to heaven and we missed sending them that letter. Well, you have that chance now with
a card that is seldom seen but very effective: the “New Year” card can be that ice-breaker that is very effective and not
often seen. Why not send a New Year’s card?!? Wouldn’t that be a wonderful way to reconnect with that old friend or
distant relative?
I am constantly looking for ways that we can make our lives a little more
friendly – a little more Christian! You might like the New Year card idea since
it is a unique way of saying “hello,” “miss you,” “God bless you.” They do
have New Year’s cards – go get a few and make that contact before you lose
another chance.
May you have a Happy New Year with God’s Blessing!
Now all things are of God, who has
reconciled us to Himself through Jesus
Christ, and has given us the ministry of
reconciliation

Evelyn’s 2¢
A New Chapter
by Evelyn Sikma
A New Year! A fresh beginning. A clean
slate. Hope. Unlimited possibilities.
If you think about it, though, the same can be
said for so many events in our lives. A wedding.
Birth of a baby. Graduation. A new job. A
promotion. Moving to a new house. Sometimes
the reason for a New Chapter may not be a happy
event. When a loved one dies after a lengthy,
debilitating illness, for the surviving spouse and
children, it can be a New Chapter. Getting the
news that you have stage 4 liver cancer when you
haven’t been sick and rarely needed a doctor. So
I started my New Chapter on November 17th,
when I received the diagnosis.
I have always been proud of my sons. I’ve
told them several times in their life that even if
they weren’t my sons, I would want to know them because they are great people! Jim (Lauren & Eric’s daddy) and Tom
are 37 and 34, respectively. Both are married to wonderful women (I couldn’t have picked any better spouses for them!).
Both have purchased their first single-family home, are gainfully employed, and get along with each other. What more
could I ask for?
Telling my sons about the cancer was extremely hard. I just didn’t know how it would affect them. They have been
terrific! Both have offered a place to stay, whether it is 1-2 nights after chemo (depending on how the drugs affect me) or
longer (if I don’t care to live alone anymore).
I had two stays in the hospital in November. Tom took me the first time and stayed with me until I sent him home at
11:00pm so he could go to work the next day. (At that point, I only had appendicitis.) The next trip was after the cancer
diagnosis and I was having trouble breathing. Jim was at my home (around 9:00am) when the paramedics arrived. He
followed us to the hospital and stayed until late afternoon when his brother took over the watch.
I had a port put into me and had my first chemo
treatment all in the same day. Tom picked me up at
5:15am and stayed until 9:00am when Jim took over
the watch. (Tom needed to be with his wife that day.)
Jim stayed for the whole chemo treatment – five
hours! No eye rolls, heavy sighs, or attitude. Just
quiet conversation and getting food and drink.
I am so blessed. My sons, daughters-in-law, and
grandchildren. My family at Christus Victor. A God
who has been with me my whole life. A God in
whom I trust my life – no matter what chapter I’m in.
Only God knows how many chapters we each
have. I’m hoping I’ve got a few more ahead of me.
But some day, there will be a last chapter for each of
us. As a Christian, our last chapter starts with death
and goes on for eternity as we go home to our Maker,
Creator, and Redeemer.

Monday Bible Study
Holiday Outing
by Laura Vitols
In continuing with the tradition from last year, the Monday Bible Study Group enjoyed a delightful evening of dinner
and fellowship at Panera, followed by attending the performance of Irving Berlin's, "White Christmas" by Overshadowed
Theatrical Productions. It was a night filled with enchanting, nostalgic, good old-fashioned entertainment. The cast ended
the performance by singing the Christmas favorite, "White Christmas," and invited the entire audience to sing along with
them. The Christmas Spirit came upon us all as we look forward to celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ on Christmas Day. It was a fabulous night out for all of us to enjoy!

Social Ministry / Greeting Cards
by Nancy Pfannkuche
The Card Ministry is making sure that each member of our congregation
receives Birthday Greetings from our church. This Ministry was originally
started by Jean Fleck. We continue this ministry in her memory. We also
send Get Well and Sympathy cards. During stressful times such as an illness
or death of a loved one, Christus Victor wants you to know that we care –
this is done by Dorothy Bruce.
We are in need of people to help send the birthday cards out! We provide
the list of names and dates, cards, and other helps. You don’t have to bear
the burden of buying stamps. We can either stamp the envelopes for you or
reimburse you for your expense. Contact Nancy for more details.

Worship & Music / Variety Show Time
Coming in February
by Kathleen Gentes
The third annual "CV's Got Talent" is Saturday, February 14, at 7:00pm.
Dust off the old clarinet case
Practice your magic trick
Review your jokes
or…think up something unique to share with the CV audience!
Remember, “talent” has a very broad definition: an innate (God-given) mental or artistic aptitude. You don’t have to be
an award-winning musician, actor, or poet! We’re a friendly audience that loves to see people doing what they love the
most. It will be a fun night! More information to come. (Yes, we know that is Valentine’s Day – but it’s the last Saturday before
Lent.)

We have 35 million laws trying to enforce Ten Commandments.
If you prove your dependability, the Lord will increase your capability.
God, grant me patience, but hurry!
God gave you a gift of twenty-four hours today. Will you use one minute to thank Him?
Merry Mas! (It’s not the same without Christ, is it?)
God will dance with you in the sunlight and walk with you in the shadows.
IMPORTANT
Change in the management of the Prayer List.
You may have noticed that the number of names on our Prayer List
has grown quite a bit – that’s the good news…people are
understanding and employing the power of prayer! The opportunity
for our family of God is to determine how to manage the list. Starting
September 1st, ALL people who are added to the List will remain on
the List for five weeks and then be automatically removed. This also
applies to those with life-threatening illnesses or situations. If, after
5 weeks, the need remains for special prayers, you can resubmit a
name. Prayer Request forms are in the pew racks. You are
responsible for getting permission to put another person’s name on
the List.

Remember in Prayer
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know
how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with
sighs too deep for words.

Special Individuals that Need Your Prayers
Any of these Americans could be any place in the world, possibly facing danger, in service to our country.
st
Sgt. 1 Class Nathan Bontrager, Colonel Rob Carlson, Staff Sergeant Steven Dlugosz, Captain Andre Hernandez, Chief
Petty Officer Patrick Medema, Private Doug Noss, Logan Ripplinger, Lance Corporal Joseph Rodriguez, Captain
Kristin Santroch, Captain Eric Santroch, Major John M Schmitt, Richard St. Clair, Major Greg Wyant, and Colton
Zumach.
-
We ask, Father, that you will comfort and strengthen our military and their families. We ask that they will be
reunited soon.
-
Please guide our Call Committee as they search for a new Associate Pastor and grant us patience during this process.
We pray, Lord, for your comfort and love to surround the family and friends of
o Deacon Briggs’ friend, Rick Springer, as they mourn his death.
o Mary Louise Schmehl as they mourn her death.
Do you have a prayer request? In order for Christus Victor to publicly pray for individuals, we need to have
their permission to speak their name out loud. This is necessary to protect their privacy.
If you are requesting prayers for a specific individual, you will need to sign your name to the Request. We will
consider your signature as confirmation that the person listed knows about and agrees to a public reading of their name.
Prayer Requests that list specific names without an authorizing signature will NOT be printed in the bulletin and
will NOT be spoken in public. Everyone is still able to fill out a Prayer Request for a specific person and post it
themselves on the Prayer Wall without providing an authorizing signature.

When things go wrong, don’t go wrong with them.

The best way to get even is to forget.
Luke 6:35
It takes more to plow a field than merely turning it over in your mind.
1 Thessalonians 4:11, 12
Men are like fish. Neither would get into trouble if they kept their mouths shut.
Proverbs 21:23
You can easily determine the caliber of a person by the amount of opposition it takes to discourage him. Prov 24:10

Christian Education / Mission Appeal - Kids’ Style
Spare Change
by Melanie Tomaso
After the holidays, we are going to give our youth a chance to be a part of a larger mission at
Christus Victor. Each week, we will ask our kids, Pre-K through college, to contribute spare
change to a "Mission Bottle." After a year of contributions, the money will be donated to one
of our outreach global missions. We hope that by doing this, they will feel the joy of giving
and see how pennies can help others throughout the world. Watch for more details after the
first of the year. Questions? Contact Melanie Tomaso or Deacon Patrick Briggs.
