BOOK ENDS Page 2 of 4 From the President’s Desk Five years ago the residents of Demarest went to the polls and approved a referendum to create our municipal public library. As we mark our first 5 years we look back to our beginnings and look ahead to our future. The Demarest Library Association was created in 1965 by a few dedicated, enthusiastic residents. The property at 90 Hardenburgh Avenue, which was the site of the old Methodist Church and part of Camp Merritt in World War I, was purchased by the Association. Books and furnishings were donated and renovations to the building were completed by 1966. We were open for business. Over the years we have grown as municipal support has increased. We were able to join the Bergen County Cooperative Library System which gives us access to the collections of 75 libraries. Delivery of reserved materials between libraries is provided by funding from the New Jersey State Library. Computers were installed, digital catalogs replaced the old card catalogs and we were on our way to the future. But we needed to secure that future. So in 2009 the Borough decided to put the establishment of a municipal public library on the ballot as a referendum. The referendum won handily by a vote of 4 to 1. As we forge ahead, we are dedicated to offering the most we can to the residents of Demarest. We’ve been talking to residents and planning for the future. You will see increased hours and more programs for adults and children. We will continue to offer the latest in technology. We will be collaborating with our schools to let students and parents know how the library can help with homework and research. Our staff is professional, dedicated, and enthusiastic. We want to make the Demarest Free Public Library a community center for the benefit of all our residents. We’ve come a long way from donations and volunteers! Congratulations to the residents of Northvale on their successful initiative to create a municipal public library! "I always felt, in any town, if I can get to a library, I'll be okay." -- Maya Angelou FOOTNOTES The Library’s BOARD OF TRUSTEES meets on the third Monday of each month at 7:00pm.
