You made it through the holidays!! How do you feel? Physically? Emotionally? If you are like most people, you probably deviated from your normal
eating plan during the Christmas season. It is quite easy to do this time
year. A few more parties whether they be work or family related. A busier
schedule may have required a few more lunches or dinners out. Or maybe it
was the traditions we hold dear in our heart like baking goodies…then nibbling on them.
It is now January—time to get back on track!! Simple table sugar and highfructose corn syrup affect us from head to toe—here is why we want to get
back on track. According to the US Department of Agriculture, the average
American consumes roughly 47 pounds of cane sugar and 35 pounds of high
-fructose corn syrup per year. We underestimate the effect of sugar on our
bodies, thinking it is purely weight related. But managing our weight is only
one reason we want to decrease our sugar consumption. Let’s start from
the top (our brain):
1. Sugar impairs our memory. Researchers at UCLA have found that fructose may damage our memories and slow learning. Results of these
studies in rats have shown that connections in their brains are effected
when sugar was consumed.
2. Sugar interferes with the body’s satiety hormones; which means when
we consume sugary food, our appetite is actually increased. This was
discovered through a preliminary study done at Yale.

Sun 9am-8pm
3. Sugar increases bacteria, and ultimately, cavities in the mouth. We have
been told since we were little to brush our teeth, but now it is even more
important with increased sugar consumption. Sugar is a breeding
ground for bacteria in our mouths, thus leading to enamel decay, potential cavities, and periodontal disease.

4. Sugar has a huge impact on heart health. Studies indicate that at certain levels, sugar intake may double the risk of heart disease. Hypotheses for this increased risk include sugar’s effect on weight, blood pressure, triglycerides and the negative impact on insulin. So look out saturated fat!
5. Sugar causes inflammation in our bodies. This could cause pain and
stiffness in the joints.
6. Sugar increases the risk of diabetes. This is relatively new evidence, but
scientists have discovered a direct correlation between rising levels of
sugar in the food supply and rising rates of diabetes, independent of
obesity rates.
7. Sugar can affect our energy levels. Simple carbohydrates (sugar) are
processed quickly by the body which causes blood sugar to spike and
then crash. As blood sugar crashes, so does energy. Complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains, are processed slowly by our bodies which
result in a steadier, long-lasting energy supply.
So if your holiday season included a few more sugary indulgences, which
may explain why you are not feeling up to par. But the holiday season is
over…the New Year, 2015, is beginning, time to get back on track.
