Standards/Learning Targets: ● I can analyze the text and themes of Dr. King’s “I have a dream” speech delivered during the March on Washington, August 28th 1963 and other historic events from the time period. Grapple: ● Students will conduct a close reading of the text, identifying evidence that supports an understanding and analysis of Dr King’s speech. ● Teacher(s) will give students time and space to read closely and grapple with the text. Discussion: ● Students will engage in rich, evidence­based conversations about the text and its meaning. ● Teacher will circulate, check for understanding and support conversations with questions, prompts, and feedback. Civil Rights Events Information (online) Teacher Presentation Introducing the Purpose: National Dialogue Event on 1/15/15 ● Videotape of the Speech Djinga St. Louis Work Period: ● Students will develop textual evidence to support their inferences and discuss their findings with a peer. (Think/Pair/ Share) ● Teacher will circulate, monitor progress and check for understanding. ● Students will research examples of segregation and discrimination that Dr. King referenced in his speech. Either computer lab time or ½ class technology use, ½ class text analysis and discussion with notecatcher/graphic organizer sharing. Student Share­Out: ● Students will have opportunity to share with a peer and get feedback. ● Students will also have opportunity to share with the whole group and receive feedback from teacher and peers. Closure: ● Day 1 ­ Students and teacher will return to learning targets, reflect on and self­assess progress, as well as set goals for the next class which will include researching segregation and discrimination events that occurred, leading up to Dr. King’s Speech. ● Day 2 ­ Exit Ticket ­ Share out findings from the research associated with segregation and discrimination. ● Day 3 ­ Exit Ticket ­ Share out findings from the research and bring home a copy of the Speech to share knowledge gained with family members. Assessment: ● Teacher will review student responses (notecatcher/graphic organizer) in order to monitor progress towards learning targets and drive future instruction. ● Students will also have a more summative assessment on the text at the end of the event (Socratic Seminar). Djinga St. Louis Date: 1/12/15­1/15/15 Days 4 ­ 7 ­ Socratic Seminar and Presentation Preparation Standards/Learning Targets: ● I can use evidence from Dr. King’s “I have a dream” speech and other historical information to engage in a Socratic Seminar regarding the segregation and discrimination. Materials: ● Copies of Dr. Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream Speech. ● Copies of the notecatcher/graphic organizer. ● Presentation Introducing the Purpose: National Dialogue Event on 1/15/15 Grapple: ● Students will continue close reading of the speech, and focus on themes central to Dr. King’s message, identifying evidence that supports an understanding and analysis of the theme related to segregation and discrimination. ● Teacher(s) will provide students with an opportunity to critique each other with respect to the Socratic Seminar protocol. Discussion: ● Students will engage in rich, evidence­based conversations about the themes of segregation and discrimination referenced in Dr. King’s speech. ● Teacher will circulate, checking for understanding and supporting conversations with questions, prompts, and feedback. Focus: ● Teacher will share and discuss exemplar/model responses. ● Students will share out interpretations of Dr. King’s theme of segregation and discrimination and other ideas from their conversations. ● Teacher and peers will offer feedback and further the discussion. ● Students will review other themes that will be presented from the other participating schools. Work Period: ● Students will develop textual evidence to support their inferences and discuss their findings with a peer.
