Painting a room.
If you’ve done it yourself before, you already know the pain. I think it should be
spelled pain-ting.
Add also, pain-ting the ceiling.
If you’ve done it yourself before, you already know the pain and the risks.
I’m too dang old to be several feet up a ladder (I’m afraid of heights), looking up
(which really hinders my sense of balance), reaching over my head with a paint
roller (I discovered sore muscles I didn’t know I had), while trying to keep paint
splatters out of my eyes (I guess it’s good that I wear glasses).
The motivation for this project is the New Year. I’ve hardly checked anything off of
last year’s resolutions, so I need to complete this soon.
In my youth, I would have finished this project in a few hours, with the help of some
friends and the promise of pizza and beer to follow.
But nowadays pizza would keep me up half the night with heartburn. Beer would
only keep me up the other half of the night having to go to the bathroom.
As I painted, alone. I turned on some classical music and within minutes into the
tediousness of the project my thoughts wandered - and in a good way.
Memories of childhood Christmas past, anticipation of turkey and stuffing, the pride
and joy of our home-made holiday baskets with canned goodies from the garden
that reminded me of Summer.
We’re using Fall leaves that have been pressing in the big dictionary for the name
tags on gifts. And the pine cones we’ve collected during evening walks for
centerpieces will make the table festive.
Odd, how a boring pain-ting project supplied my
brain with a cornucopia of holidays past, and
future - and the beauty of it all. Hopefully just like
my newly painted office.
God bless and Merry Christmas!

ABOUT our cover PHOTO
It was a chilly Saturday this year as
we attended an adult, flash back to the
1960’s Halloween party. There was tie
dye and hippie costumes everywhere.
Standing next to the
fire pit to warm myself,
I spotted a jolly fellow.
As I only knew
a few people at the party,
and not wanting to be the
dork who sat alone
in the corner,
I often start a
conversation with
whoever is standing
next to me.
My conversation with the psychedelic
outfit wearing, and long white bearded
man began with “Hi, I’m Laure. You look
like Santa Claus.”
To my surprise he responded “I am.”
I wanted to sit on his lap and tell him
what I wanted for Christmas, but as I’m

As his wife, Sherri

“Joe became

while wearing it.
He was Santa to all of the children who
saw him in all of those parades.”
The Holidazzle parade no longer exists,
but Santa continues in his traditional
costume, a kind heart and jolly laugh.
He also worked at JB Hudson Jewelry
for several years. He shared “I met my

Even as we get older, I think there is still
a lot we can learn from Santa.
I hope to be a ‘good girl’ and Santa and

And no presents are required, as their

I learned that Joe was the favorite
Santa Claus for the Holidazzle parade

His previous careers were varied and
included: joining the Navy, entering
the seminary, working on the Alaskan

degree. He was also a professional

joined the Masons, and is involved in the

Joe also performs in his traditional
German lederhosen attire.

The POWER of LIGHTING
The lighting of a room can be very powerful and can enhance
the room’s size, the decore and the focal points.
be a nice touch to show off your family
treasures, and your china.
There are two main rules: 1) Mix your light sources at different
wattage levels to create a flattering ambiance, and 2) allow for
task lighting for whatever you do in that space (reading, sewing
or getting dressed).
In the kitchen, focus on overhead lighting
on a dimmer that you can crank up
when cooking.
In your living room, light three of the four corners focusing on
art, a plant or your favorite piece of furniture.
Use a combination of table lamps and floor lamps, some with
a downward glow and some that shine upward.
Allow for reading in as many seats as possible with downglowing lamps with three-way switches.
In your dining room, to draw people in, make the table the
brightest spot in the room.
Elsewhere in the room, indirect lighting is best as it’s relaxing
and flattering. Give the space a subtle glow with a pair of small
table lamps or matching sconces on the wall above.

Add lower lights to brighten work surfaces. Use pendants and
under-cabinet lights so you can see everything.
In the bedroom, aim for a cozy atmosphere by placing reading
lamps or sconces by the bed, but not pointed directly at the
bed. If you have recessed or track fixtures, angle them away
from the bed, toward the dressing area.
In the bathroom, the best choice for applying makeup or shaving is sidelights, such as a pair of sconces flanking the mirror.
An overhead light helps fill in any shadows on your face and
also fully illuminates the room (important when cleaning).
If you have a large bathroom, you might also want a light
directly over the shower.
Even better, install a heat light to keep the bathroom toasty
during our frigid winter months.

NECK warmers
YIKES, November 10th
brought a fast and furious
winter to us again in the
North Metro area. 10” of
snow and daytime temperatures only in the 20’s
for almost two weeks.
While stopping by to shop, you may want to also consider
scheduling a hair appointment.
I’m still recovering from
the Polar Vortex from last
winter. I need to warm up.
I saw Deb last week and she didn’t scold me for the hack job
I had done on my hair by cutting it myself for the last three
months. Even though I know I had made a real mess of it.
Fortunately, I have the best hair stylist, who, while managing
two businesses still finds some ‘spare time’ to create these
wonderful “neck warmers” as she calls them.
They’re sort of like a scarf, but with much more fashion appeal
as they are available in a multitude of colors, and are accessorised with lovely and fun, big buttons.
I got one for myself, in red, to wear over the holidays. And I will
be purchasing more for the ladies of my extended family.
Deb also has lots of home made scarves, jewelery and even
purse holders. Unique and beautiful gift ideas.
I had an extremely busy summer with the joy of birthday
parties, weddings, and class reunions, but also a few funerals.
Such is life. But I couldn’t get my act together to schedule a
proper hair cut and/or color. So, I did both myself.
She even kindly said I had done “a nice job” on coloring my
own hair. Yes, she is a kind and forgiving person.
Deb is an advertiser of my magazine and helps me pay the
bills of publishing, as you can see by her ad below. But, that is
not why I’m writing about her. I think she is older than me, but
younger at heart. She works very hard, but if you love what you
do, you never really work a day in your life.
At our last recent visit, we both still talked about our gardens,
now 10” under snow. And we discussed neck warmers, and
the approaching joy of the holidays. Give Deb a call for mental
therapy, and hair and wardrobe beautification.

Getting READY
Every year around this
time that small creeping
sense of panic begins to
creep over me.
Some small thing will happen and I’ll
think, ‘Oh MY GOSH! It’s going to be
Christmas and I’m not ready!’
It usually happens when I write a check
and the date starts with November, This
year there was a prequel. One of the
kids playing with their iPod asked Seri,
‘How many days until Christmas?’ Seri
replied, ‘It is 78 days until Christmas.’ I
almost dropped my fork.
November 2nd, not only was it the end
of daylight savings but the first ‘red
cup’ from Starbucks. I guess they think
I’ll be in such a festive mood from that
red piece of post consumer recycled
cardboard that I won’t notice that I am
going to work and coming home in the
darkest dark, or maybe the plan is I’ll get
a grande with extra shots instead of my
usual short.
I’m sure there is a complicated marketing strategy that my caffeine-starved
brain will never figure out or at least
that’s what they are counting on.
Not to mention the sugar infusion from
the iced ginger bread, the cranberry
bliss bars and the peppermint brownie
cake pops.
fills up and I have a continuous dialogue
in my head – “When am I going to have
time to do that?”
Oh MY GOSH!, I forgot to get those!
What are we going to do for that thing?
How am I going to get the tree up? The
bathrooms need to be cleaned. I think
the dog needs to be groomed. Were
we supposed to sell wreaths for that
fundraiser? And on and on and on, it is a
never-ending loop.
Again this year Thanksgiving fell late in
the month, with December the very next
week. How will I get the tree up? – here
we go again. I suppose some of you are
thinking, ‘Can’t her family help her with
this holiday OCD?’
Did I forget to mention
that I have control issues?
So yes, I am part of the
problem here.
Maybe there is something to these seasonal menu changes, all these yummy
bites and color pallets, green, red and
shiny with glitter, meant to take me back
to a time when all I had to do was make
some paper Christmas tree out of a
paper plate with glued on Fruit Loops
for ornaments, and every piece of paper
was a potential snowflake, the windows
covered with them just in case no real
ones fell.
®
I think I am having
a diabetic reaction just
thinking about it.
I may also be drooling…
Some how all these things will drop
kick my coping skills into place so I can
deliver whatever it is I have decided
Christmas needs to be. This is still not
entirely clear to me because every year
it changes.
But, back to my seasonal anxiety disorder. The realization that the weeks are
crazily flying by in a blur of holiday get
togethers, school programs, projects,
and canned food drives. The calendar
What I know for sure is the tree will be

will be family. Whatever family is available, usually myself, my husband, our
kids, my parents and the dog, oh and
some presents, not too many though.
A lazy day with a yummy meal, homemade treats, cards, dominos, board
games and White Christmas on the TV.
I guess that is what it is
supposed to be.

Days of DECEMBER
Ding-a-Ling Day • December 12
A day to “Ring your Bell”. No reference
to the Salvation Army Bell Ringers.
On Ding-a-Ling Day, brace yourself for
bizarre and crazy behavior from people
you encounter today - or create your
own. Even normally conservative people
have been known to go a little crazy.
Some say this is a day for wackos,
lunatics, and others who are off their
rocker. It is simply a day to cut loose
and act a little weird.
Ding-a-Lings and Dingbats are not quite
the same thing.
Chocolate Covered Anything Day •
December 16
A day to indulge, binge, pig out, and
otherwise consume chocolate. The
timing of this day, during the holiday
season, couldn’t be better.
Ding-a-Ling Day, and the other to eat on
Chocolate Covered Anything Day.
Winter Solstice • December 21
Winter Solstice marks the beginning
of winter and is the shortest day of the
year. On this day, it seems as if the
nighttime darkness lasts all day.
At the North Pole, the sun never rises on
this day. However, it is not the coldest
day of winter, as the northern hemisphere continues to lose more heat.
Make a cup of hot chocolate and put
another log on the fire! Winter will be
here for a while.
Not to make you feel worse, but, while
we in the northern hemisphere are experiencing our shortest days, the southern
hemisphere is basking in sunshine and
enjoying the first day of summer.
New Years Eve • December 31
Spread or drizzle chocolate over cupcakes, waffles, nuts, raisins or bananas.
The traditional night to party, followed by
the next day’s new year resolutions.
In the giving spirit of the holiday season,
you may want to share some of your
favorite chocolate covered treats today.
I don’t recall if my partner and I have

The Christmas Story
by James Miller, Mounds View, MN
It was cold that starry night
When tales of old
would come to light.
The Virgin’s time was very near
Under a sky so silent and clear.
Shepherds heard angels singing
And celestial bells joyfully ringing.
They went at once to gaze in awe
At God’s son on a bed of straw.
Let us marvel again at the sight
Of Him who accepted our plight.

Moving DAZE
As we are all getting older,
We’re all making changes
in our life.
One of the BIG ones is
considering selling
the house.
Shirley has kept a journal
of the selling
process thus far, and is
sharing it with us.
The closets were next. Shuffling through
my clothes, I noticed some threadbare
sweatshirts and jeans. They had to go
even if they were part of my history.
There were items I had not worn in
a year. Those went. Believe it or not,
Chapter 4, Closets, Garage and Shed
some other items didn’t fit. Gone. The
nicer clothes were donated to the local
school district’s Path Ways store. Having
culled the closet so well, I ended up with
56 empty hangers. Next I entered the garage. You do
realize garages are used for more than
parking spaces for a car or two. I found
hanging from the ceiling, an old ironing
board, a couple of doors and six used
tires. Don’t ask me why I saved those
tires.
Carefully shelved out of reach, I found
three sets of dishes, two old suitcases,
a SmithCorona typewriter which put me
through college, a box of tupperware,
and more boxes of Mom and Grandma’s
treasures. I found three bags of fertilizer.
And believe it or not, I found two cars.
Last it was time to tackle the little
storage shed. In doing so I frightened
the wits out of thousands of spiders in
hiding. They were evicted immediately.
Among the webs were flower pots, a
rolled up fence, four lawn chairs, one
table, and lawn tools left by the previous
owner some 40 years earlier. There
were three water hoses, signs “Let It
Snow” and “Happy Halloween”, and
dirt. Lots of dirt. Once everything was
removed or rearranged, I was covered
with dirt and cobwebs from hair to foot.
Next came the most difficult part.

We are fast approaching the end of another year. As I look back at the recipes I have shared I
realized that I have not included a recipe for the family members known as our pet. A year and a half
ago we adopted a small rescue dog. He has become the center of attention on many occasions and
has become a large part of our home. When arriving home from work I can always look forward to my

treats I came up with a combination of ingredients that our dog just loves.

girl scout sash with
staples and a glue gun.
I had to write this letter with my
Grandson’s red crayon, on the back
of a receipt in the laundry room
between cycles, and who knows
when I’ll find any more free time.
Here are my wishes:
I’d like a pair of legs, (in any color
except black and blue) which I already
have) that don’t ache after a day of
chasing kids or the dog).
I’d like arms that don’t flap in the
breeze, but are strong enough to
carry a screaming child out of the
candy aisle in the grocery store.
I’d also like a waist, since I lost
mine years (or decades) ago, after
bearing children, or eating too much
hotdish in the winter months and too
much ice cream in the summer.
If you’re allowing big ticket items this
year I’d like a car with fingerprint
resistant windows and a radio that
only plays adult music.
On the practical side, I could use a
talking daughter doll that answers
the phone, rather than requesting
me to text her, or post on Facebook.
If you don’t mind I could also use a
few Christmas miracles. Would it be
too much trouble to declare ketchup
a vegetable? It would clear my guilty
conscience immensely.
Well, Santa, the buzzer on the dryer
is buzzing, and I think one of the
Grandkids saw my feet under the
laundry room door. I think he wants
his crayon back.
Have a safe trip and remember to
leave your wet boots by the chimney
and dry off by the fire so you don’t
catch a cold.
One more thing...please
cancel all my requests if you
can keep my children and
Grandchildren young enough
to still believe in Santa.

Cameron’s Christmas Prayer
It was
Christmas
Eve of 1995
and this
Grandma
still
remembers
that night.
Fresh snow had fallen in just the right
amount and we definitely had a white
Christmas. After church service, which
had blessed us, we went to our daughter’s home for a delicious meal, visiting,
and time of opening gifts.
Included in our family gathering was our
new friend, Richard who was in his forties and single. I learned that he had no
place to go at Christmas so Darren, our
son-in-law wanted him to be with us.
Just before we were to eat Darren announced that Cameron would pray first.
Cameron, who was just three years old,
had talked early and well for his age.
Darren also added that
Cameron was
a rambling pray-er.
Cameron began, “Dear Jesus, thank you
that Christmas is your birthday, and that
Grandma and Grandpa and Richard can
be with us.” He continued to pray and
then ended with “And thank you for the
bats. My dad likes bats. Amen.”
We adults chuckled quietly and then we
all enjoyed our meal together. Richard
spent every Christmas with us after that
and loved being included in our family
gatherings. We loved having him, too.
Although many years have passed since
the Christmas of 1995, I still remember
the warmth of being together and
Camerson’s Christmas prayer.

HELP a furried FRIEND
I saw a story on the TV
news, and it was personal
to me, because it was from
Morrison County, where I
was born and raised.
I learned that rural animal rescue shelters are the hardest hit by lack of funding, also hard hit in these cold weather
months, which will only get more severe.
Morrison County Animal Humane
Society in LIttle Falls, MN is located two
hours north of the Twin Cities. They are
a small, not for profit shelter, that has
had almost 500 animals come through
their door already this year.
Mickie Gocken, with the MCAHS shared
that “Most come in as strays, but we
also get animals dumped on our door-
step overnight, out in the cold. It is not
uncommon to find a box or two of kittens
or dogs outside our door at least once a
week.“
“We take them in and
make sure that they are
healthy, vet the animal if
needed, feed them, and of
course play with them
so that they learn that
humans are not bad.”
Providing care can cost $50-$100 a day
depending on the needs of the animal.
This time of year, they are low on funds
for vaccines, and veterinary costs.
“When most of our funds are spent on
food for the animals, we are not able to
provide other services such as spaying
or neutering the animal before adoption.” continues Mickie.
Donations are needed. You may contact
the shelter at 320-632-0703 or mail a
donation to MCAHS, 200 7th Ave. NE.
Little Falls, MN 56345.
If you are
unable to
donate cash,
this is their
‘begging list’:
blankets, kitty
litter, dog or
cat food, pet
toys, brushes, baking soda,
or your time to walk, and
care for them and love them.

The MAGIC skates
It was a slow day where Joe worked,
so he volunteered to take the afternoon
off. He knew the children, who would
soon be his family when he married
their mother, would be ice skating on the
pond near their apartment.
He thought of how this could be a
connection to their lives. As a champion
speed skater for Powderhorn Club, he
had found his place in society as a teen.
As he parked the car, he caught sight
of nine year old Bonnie joyfully skating
around the edge with both ankles almost
touching the ice.
He called to her and motioned for her to
come to him. Her wide smile melted his
heart. There had always been a special
bond between them. Her older sister,
Betty, was more independent and aloof.
It seemed to him that she demanded
more than her share, and Bonnie wore
hand-me-downs without complaining.
When Bonnie reached his side he asked
“Where did you get those skates?”
Unabashed she answered, “They were
Gene’s last year, but his feet got too big,
but Betty’s still fit her.”
He open the back door of the car and
lifted her to the seat. Almost laughing
he said, “Let’s see what we have here,”
and started unlacing her big brother’s
outgrown skates.
His amusement increased
with each pair of stockings
he removed. “Five pair of
socks. Do you think you’ll
be warm enough?”
She replied “I don’t wear
them for warmth. I had to
make the skates fit.”
His smile broadened. “How inventive
you are! But, I don’t think even five
more layers would do it. Where are your
shoes?”
As he neared Betty and Gene he called
out “Your sister is going with me to run
some errands.” He got her shoes.
When he returned to the car he asked
her to select a single pair of socks.
Bonnie selected a pair. As he put them
and her shoes and boots on she said,
“You are my Prince Charming and I am
Cinderella. But, instead of marrying
me, you will marry my mom. I love you,
Daddy.
Daddy! None of them had called him
that before even though he had begun
to embrace them in his heart as his
children. He had wondered if he would
be accepted. He hugged her.
“Want to come to the front seat?”
Affordable Bathroom Safety
“Oh yes! Where are we going?”
“You and I are going to have a secret.
Can you keep a secret?”
“Oh, yes! Grandma and I have secrets.”
“We’re going to get you some skates
that fit you. Then we are going the park
ring and see how much difference it will
make.”
“Skates that fit me so they don’t hurt?”
“They will fit you so well your ankles
won’t bend. Then I will teach you how to
figure skate. Can you keep a secret until
after Christmas?”
“I will keep the secret until you tell me I
can tell.”
“It will always be our secret, but you will
perform as a surprise.”
They went to a special store that sold
sport equipment. They walked past football, baseball and basketball things to a
whole section devoted to skates.
A man brought out several boxes containing boots. After measuring her feet
he tried them on her. She whispered to
Joe, “Those boots don’t have any blades
to skate on.”
Joe patted her on the shoulder, “He will
put them on after we make sure the boot
part fits. The blades he puts on will be

magic, and you will skate next to me like
Cinderella danced with the prince.”
When the skates were ready they went
to the park pond. He put on her and his
own figure skates.
She could hardly tell she was wearing
skates. Her ankles didn’t sag and the
blades felt secure under her feet.
He took her hands in his and skated
backward as she skated forward. It was
so easy! She giggled and looked at
him. His eyes told
her he was proud of
here. His smile and
softness of his face
made her feel he
loved her. After six
years without one,
she had a father.
The skates were kept in the trunk of his
car. He picked her up as often as he
could, and they practiced. They shared
the secret with Grandma so it kept Betty
and Gene from knowing why she wasn’t
with them.
After Christmas, they
drove to the park pond.
Joe had told them
he had a pair of used
skates for Bonnie.
He didn’t lie. They were
used skates.
She had used them.
where he took her hands as she skated
toward him.
Betty and Gene stopped skating to
watch and see if Bonnie fell down or
skated on her ankles. She and Joe skated side by side a few strokes, then they
each raised one leg behind them and he
skated around her as she spun in what
is called an axle - which was the latest
move he had taught her.
Betty and Gene went to the ice to show
mother how good they had gotten. They
skated hand in hand and switched places going backward and forward. Mother
clapped.
As Cinderella spun,
Prince Charming had tears
flowing down his face
and called to her mom
“It’s amazing what
children can do when they
have the right equipment.
Soon Joe had his and Bonnie’s skates
on. They walked to the edge of the pond
To this day, she never told the secret.
Joe and Grandma never told either.
