Rocky Mountain Over The Hill Gang Hill Topics January 2015 JOIN YOUR RMOTHG FRIENDS IN “TRAVELING THE SILK ROAD” at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. This exhibition will immerse you in the most celebrated trade route in human history, which stretched 5700 miles from China through Central Asia to the Middle East and the Roman Empire. The exhibition includes artifacts and recreations of the goods that defined the route and depicts life in five cities on the route during the Silk Road’s golden age (A.D. 600 to 1200). ADDRESS: 2001 Colorado Boulevard, Denver (303-370-6000) COST: $22.95, $18.95 Seniors (65), $7.00 Members. These costs include general admission to the museum, which gives access to the concurrent exhibit “Whales: Giants of the Deep”. You may return to the museum after lunch if you hold onto your ticket for scanning. We are asking that you go on-line to order your tickets for the exhibition: Go to www.dmns.org and follow the links to tickets for Traveling The Silk Road. The steps are pretty easy to follow. However, it may not be obvious that you need to scroll down on the second page designated for daytime tickets to select the time and category of your tickets. Starting at 9:15 am, 75 visitors are admitted to the exhibition in 15 minute intervals. Please select 9:15. If that time is filled (not likely), please select 9:30. If you plan on attending, we encourage you to purchase tickets as soon as you can. OPTIONAL LUNCH: 12:30 at Avenue Grill, 630 East 17th Avenue, Denver. This restaurant is described as a “traditional San Francisco style neighborhood restaurant.” It has a very pleasant environment and delicious food at a fair price. The restaurant serves brunch on Saturday, but also offers salads, burgers and sandwiches ($10 to $13 range). For details: www.avenuegrill.com Avenue Grill is about 10 minutes from the Museum. Turn right (south) onto Colorado Blvd. Turn right at 17th Ave. 17th Ave. will turn into 18th Ave. From 18th, turn left onto Washington Street. Parking lot is before 17th on the right. I remember when it was pre-2000, and I thought how strange it would be to have dates ending with 2015. And here we are. Happy New Year! Another successful Holiday dinner with over 100 participants was held at the CMC Mountaineering Center. As an all-volunteer organization we couldn’t do it without everyone’s help. So many folks helped with setup and decorating tables, serving spirits, preparing food, cleaning up and delivering gifts to the children. Many thanks for all the help and participation to make it another fun Holiday party. Approximately 75 gifts were donated by members for Jefferson Action Center children’s holiday party. As Jane said, “It truly takes a village!” And speaking of Jane…She will be stepping down as our Social Committee Chairperson. Please thank Jane when you see her snowshoeing, hiking, and enjoying her new freedom. Many, many thanks Jane, for all your leadership, time and efforts over the past two years. Jane had great help from her committee and others, and we thank all of you for your ideas and assistance. I inadvertently missed two RMOTHG members who were recognized at the Denver Group dinner in October. Susan Gregory and Bill Markley were honored for over 40 years of membership in CMC. Congratulations to both of you, here’s to 40 more years! Please be extra careful when you participate in snowshoeing, skiing, and other winter outdoor activities. Often the sun makes it look like it is warmer than it is. Keep your 10 essentials with you, and be prepared as you have fun with family and friends. Winter is a beautiful and fun season! JANU JAN December holidays kept us busy, but some of us still found time for mountain snowshoeing, or close-in foothills hiking. Think SNOW as we head into January, looking for fluffy stuff! Some of us took a holiday hiking hiatus, so remember it’s harder when we’re getting back in shape, or recovering from injuries (Leaders, too!). Snow changes easier hikes to harder ones, but shoeing in deeper snow is both relaxing, and exhilarating! Even if you’re a newbie, you are welcome, because we accommodate differing needs & skill levels. (If you walk, you can snowshoe!). Each week we shoe or hike a different location for two hours, eat lunch in a pretty spot, return, and offer optional snack stops on way home for getting acquainted. We also focus on safety: OTHG members always carry Yak Trax or microspikes, ten essentials, winter gear, and snowshoes when we need them! If you want to receive our weekly emails with location and trip details for the following Wednesday snowshoe/winter hike, email Jeff at [email protected]. Hope to see you soon, enjoying exercise, camaraderie, beautiful Colorado Winter with our OTHG friends! U H T I W UBING On January 28 I have arranged for us to go to the Fraser Tubing Hill. It will be one hour of tubing with a pizza lunch afterward. You will need to sign a waiver that will be provided. Clothing for trip ~ dress according to the weather and as if you were going sledding or skiing (without the hard plastic boots ~ ski boots are not allowed on the tubing hill.) We suggest dressing in layers, with a water proof outer layer. The price of the trip & trip sign-up will in an email a week before we go, so please watch your e-mail. Hope to see everyone out there for some fun! COME T Questions? Give me a call or email: [email protected] Carole Adler 303-204-0105 CROSS-COUNTRY SKIERS! This year, the RMOTHG will be offering more cross-country ski trips as we have added more leaders to our ranks (Vern Bass, Jeff Flax, Jim Stelzig, Tom Waymire, and Roger J. Wendell). We will not necessarily offer a trip each week, and the days of the trips will vary depending on the leader’s schedule and snow and weather conditions. Our trips will be on established backcountry trails. These will be Easy II (3 to 6 miles round trip and up to 600 ft. elevation gain) and Easy III (6 to 8 miles round trip or 600 ft. to 800 ft. elevation gain) trips. The ability to ski down backcountry trails on cross-country skis is required. If you are interested in receiving e-mail announcements about RMOTHG cross-country ski trips, write to Jeff Flax ([email protected]) ! P I R T T HU On March 11 and 12th we are going to Jay’s and Walter’s Cabin which is on Vail Pass. It's very la-de-da as the cabins have running water, bathrooms and a sauna. We will snowshoe in 2.7 miles with an elevation gain of 650’, and we will stay for 2 nights. Watch for the e-mail with details of the trip ~ cost, itinerary, and how to sign up. We always have a blast at the cabins and hope you will join us this year.
