 CALL TO WORSHIP
Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
Ascribe to the LORD the glory of his name;
worship the LORD in holy splendor.
The voice of the LORD is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the LORD, over the mighty waters.
The voice of the LORD is powerful;
the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
The LORD sits enthroned over the flood;
the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.
May the LORD give strength to his people!
May the LORD bless his people with peace!

Now in the Name of God
The Overbrook Choir
Now in the name of God, who sent
salvation’s word and sacrament,
Through John’s baptizing waters’ way,
for grace and strength and light we pray.
Our names are writ in holy hand;
God leads us to the promised land.
We rise in wonder from the flood,
and love becomes out livelihood.
With Noah, through disaster borne,
with Moses, from the water drawn,
With Jonah, from the sea released,
we celebrate this rising feast.
The water is a seal and sign
of costly love that makes us clean.
This love we see in Christ portrayed,
who rose triumphant from the dead.
We sing our thanks that old and young
so to the church of Christ belong.
This is the covenant of grace:
we look salvation in the face.

January Hymn of the Month, No. 480 – Take Me to the Water.
An African-American spiritual, Glory to God suggests this hymn
“sums up the commitment of a candidate for baptism: the request
for the rite, an expression of motivation, and a succinct affirmation of faith. The widening melodic lines build anticipation and give
weight to the final phrase of each stanza.” Note the rhythmic
alteration appropriate to the hymn’s tune, TAKE ME TO THE WATER.
Next Sunday, January 18: The Second Sunday after the Epiphany.
Observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Scripture: I Samuel 3:120, John 1:43-51. Preaching: The Rev. Wallace W. Bubar, Pastor.
Lay Leader: Sarah Stephens. Acolyte: Audrey Sigler. Deacons
delivering flowers: Mick Stanley and Denariel Benn.

A Note of Thanks
Dear Friends in Christ,
My heart is filled with gratitude for your generosity and
loving kindness! Your gracious gifts will allow me to ship supplies
to support mission outreach in Papua New Guinea. As I leave on
January 19, I will do so embracing each of you as partners in
mission and ministry. May God richly bless you as you have
blessed the faith community of Lae, Papua New Guinea.
With loving appreciation,
Sharon Parker

Heeding God’s Call “Memorial to the Lost”
Beginning next weekend, Overbrook Presbyterian Church will
host Heeding God’s Call’s moving exhibit on our lawn. Heeding
God’s Call is an organization that works with faith-based
communities to prevent gun violence, especially the tragic
number of deaths that occur each year. The t-shirt memorial is a
simple but compelling demonstration of the scope of the carnage
wrought by gun violence. During the year the memorial is
installed at sites throughout the Philadelphia area. Overbrook’s
busy crossroads location will launch the 2015 updated memorial
for Philadelphians lost to gun violence in 2014.
