SCHOOL DISTRICT
What is Transitional
Kindergarten?
The California Kindergarten Readiness Act was
signed into law in 2010. Under the new law,
children must turn 5 years old on or before a
specific date to enroll in kindergarten. For the
2014-2015 school year, children must turn 5
years old on or before September 1¸ 2014.
In order to support families with young kinderaged children with fall birthdays who no longer
can enter kindergarten, districts will now offer
them a transitional kindergarten program (TK).
Transitional kindergarten gives young learners a
head start and provides them with an
opportunity to learn and grow in an
environment that is tailored to meet their
academic and social needs.
In transitional kindergarten, teachers help
children develop skills through activities that
build confidence and communication. They also
expose children to reading and math in exciting,
interactive ways by using educational games to
teach children about words and sentences and
help them understand mathematical concepts
like counting and patterns.

Who Attends Transitional
Kindergarten?
Why is Transitional Kindergarten
Good for Our Kids?
“Research shows that children who attend
kindergarten readiness programs like
transitional kindergarten are more likely
to do well in school and attend college.
Transitional kindergarten will help all our
kids get the best possible start, with
curriculum that is designed just for them.”
- Anne Campbell, San Mateo County
Superintendent of Schools
TK is part of the public school system and is
free.
Classes will be taught by credentialed
teachers at a local elementary school.
It is a new two-year program: transitional
kindergarten is year one and traditional
kindergarten is year two.
The TK curriculum directly connects and
supports the traditional kindergarten
curriculum.
TK teachers help students develop social and
communication skills.
Students benefit from academic and
enrichment activities like art and drama.
When parents enroll their children,
eligibility for TK or Kindergarten will be
determined by their birth date.
Generally, older students will be placed
in traditional kindergarten and
younger students will be placed
in transitional kindergarten.
Once students are placed in a transitional
program, parents will not need to give
permission for their student to continue to
kindergarten the following year. TK is not a
repeat or retentive program. It is a modified
kindergarten preparation program. It will
introduce many of the skills needed for success
to our younger students who will enter
kindergarten the following year.
2014-2015
School Year
This year, children will be
eligible for TK if they turn 5
between September 2 and
December 2, 2014, inclusive.
Registration for both transitional kindergarten
and traditional kindergarten will begin on
February 3, 2014 at district elementary schools.
