Bioproducts and Bioenergy Research Laboratory (BBRL)
BBRL NEWS:
SOP for anaerobic digestion study is being developed by BBRL
members (Fuqing Xu, Liangheng Yang, Xumeng Ge, Long Lin)
Three new instruments had been acquired to improve the laboratory
equipment: a High Pressure Ion Chromatograph (IC-5000), an
Automatic Solvent Extractor (ASE350) and a Rocket Evaporator.
The three instruments are from DionexTM. The IC-5000 is a high
sensitive equipment with columns to detect cations, anions and sugars.
The ASE350 is a system that allows the extraction of samples in 2040 min instead of 24 hours of the traditional Soxhlet system. The
Rocket Evaporator can evaporate solvents automatically in up to 18
samples at a time and it is adapted to hold the tubes from the ASE350.
JOURNAL CLUB UPDATE
The BBRL Journal Club was established in December 2013. The
mission of this club is to provide an environment to discuss journal
publications and to share research ideas. Dr. Liangcheng Yang
(postdoc) organized this club and led the first club discussion on
December 4th. Siam Racharaks led the discussion on December 18th.
In January 2014, Fuqing Xu and Long Lin were the two leaders, and
led discussion of “Dynamic effect of total solid content, low
substrate/inoculum ratio and particle size on solid-state anaerobic
digestion” and “Revealing Nature's Cellulase Diversity: The
Digestion Mechanism of Caldicellulosiruptor bescii CelA” on Jan 8th
and 15th, respectively.
BBRL MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Lo Niee Liew – Ms. Lo Niee Liew is the Lab
Manager for quasar energy group since 2011.
She is originally from Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
She has a BS. In Food Processing Engineering
from Purdue University and a MSc. from OSU,
where she studied Anaerobic Digestion with Dr.
Yebo Li from 2010 - 2011. Between her BS and
Masters, she went back to Malaysia and worked
for Cadbury and Nestle. Ms. Liew likes to
travelling and enjoying gastronomy, and many
of her colleagues consider her a great cook.
