I think he/she would like doing what you do. Where does he/she apply"? President……………..………………..Joy Beth Foster Vice-President………………………Charlie Bowman Secretary…………...…………………….… Jay Taylor Being a Licensed Dispensing Optician is one of the most misunderstood professions. How do you or how would you answer the person who thinks everything you do consists of picking pretty frames and putting some numbers in a computer? The person who has such thoughts could be in the same mindset as a legislator who has a request to sunset (do away with) Tennessee Licensed Dispensing Opticians. These bills go across the desks of legislators at a rapid pace. They usually sign and go on to the next bill unless they are informed and have reason to stop and not sign. That is our job and the mission of The TDOA and each professional who cares to keep our career a profession, not a frame styling job. That goal is to keep Tennessee a licensed state with professionals who participate in continuing education of various and pertinent subjects presented by various professionals in the industry. As professionals in The TDOA we can come together as an association to make a difference for Tennessee Licensed Opticians. As individuals we are one voice. As an association, we are a united voice. It is our responsibility to educate the public and the legislators. It is our responsibility to brand the Tennessee Licensed Optician. If you are not a TDOA member or know a LDO, apprentice or student who is not, we welcome you into this association. We have benefits and camaraderie that only our association can provide. It is hard to believe that this will be our last newsletter of 2014. We have two more continuing education opportunities this year. Please look inside this newsletter for details. 2015 will be a very exciting year for The TDOA. Go to our new website TDOA.org, call, email, or fax headquarters, or the officers and directors on our web page with any questions or suggestions about TDOA or continuing education. We are looking forward to embracing next year with you in The TDOA! Sincerely honored to be your TDOA President, Joy Beth Foster HEADQUARTERS INFORMATION TDOA P.O. T he T e n n e s s e e O p ti c i a n Legislative UPDATE On June 24, 2014 a special subcommittee of the joint House and Senate Government Operations Committee voted in favor to recommend passage to the full TN General Assembly a six year extension for the Tennessee Board of Dispensing Opticians. Senator Janice Bowling (R-Tullahoma) made the motion for the six year extension plan and paved the way fort the eventual passing of the motion. This is wonderful news but the work is not over. The recommendation made by the committee still has to pass the House and Senate Government Operations Committees, the House Calendar and Rules Committee and the full House and Senate in 2015. The TDOA will keep you up to date on what we need to do to help the extension get passed. Thank you to all our members and board members who took time to call and email our state representatives on the board’s behalf. Thank you also to our lobbyist, Theo Morrison, for bringing this to our attention. Facebook Friend of the Year 2014 This year the TDOA board decided to give an award for the Facebook friend of the year. T he T e n n e s s e e O p ti c i a n Page 5 Convention 2014 Full of Surprises This year the TDOA convention started off with a bang. The welcome reception sponsored by Steve Daniel of Cherry Optical was a wonderful start to the weekend. Steve ended up surprising everyone by drawing numbers and handing out 8 Visa gift cards! The prizes ranged from $25 to $50. On Saturday Jill Luebbert spoke to the group for the first time. She was an engaging speaker and really enjoyed her time with the opticians of Tennessee. B.W. Phillips wrapped up the session joking that he just had to keep everyone awake for 4 more hours. During the sessions a large silent auction was laid out in the hallway. Items ranged from jewelry and sunglasses to a weekend get away at the Wilderness at the Smokies. The auction money all goes toward the education fund. Also during the sessions the TDOA gave out door prizes. This year the prizes were all $25 gift cards to Target, Bass Pro Shops and Subway. The other big winners of the weekend were Terry Mink, Charlie Bowman and Andy Renfro who won their 2015 TDOA dues in drawings. Terry brought in a new member and won his membership. Charlie and Andy donated $100 or more to the Opticians PAC fun and won theirs. Right before lunch there was a business meet- A group gathers around the piano to hear Mark Foster play and Peggy DeCrow sing at the TDOA Welcome Reception sponsored by Steve Daniel. Andy and Jim Renfro of Knoxville Optical pose with Monty the Moose from the Wilderness at the Smokies. ing to elect new members to the TDOA board of directors. The new board members are Angela Lucy, director from Memphis and Darrell Lassiter director from Nashville. Jay Taylor the former Chattanooga director was moved into the Secretary position. During the voting these positions were reinstated Joy Beth Foster (President), Charlie Bowman (Vice President), Felda Stacey (Treasurer), Director Johnson City Mikki Daniel, Director Chattanooga Shane Partain and Director Knoxville Brenda Blackburn. It will be a new interesting environment that is fun for the whole family.
