A Training for School Nurses

Purpose: The Managing Students with Seizures is a continuing education training program designed to
provide the school nurse with information, strategies and resources that will enable him/her to better manage the
student with seizures by supporting positive treatment outcomes, maximizing educational and developmental
opportunities, and ensuring a safe and supportive environment.
Course Objectives: When the school nurse has completed the three modules in this training, he/she will be
able to:
1. Describe classifications of seizures and epilepsy, potential triggers, and risk factors for seizures and
emergencies.
2. Describe common treatments for epilepsy, potential side effects, and when referral to epilepsy specialist
is necessary.
3. Provide appropriate first aid for a student during and after a seizure.
4. Implement a Seizure Action Plan in a school environment utilizing safe practices for medication
administration.
5. Implement strategies to alleviate psychosocial aspects of epilepsy for students, parent and teachers.
6. Utilize resources to train school personnel on safe care and assistance in students with seizures.

Cost/CEU Information: The workshop is FREE for school nurses thanks to the generous support of the
Epilepsy Foundation. ISNO Provider #68, is offering .46 CEUs and is a co-sponsor of this event. All
participants must register. No walk-ins. Please dress in layers to accommodate for temperature variations.
