The Sunshine team have been working hard to have the new dojo up and running and there is a lot of excitement with the new premises being ready for classes to begin Monday the 18th August. The new dojo is located in the rear training room of World Gym - 130 Harvester Rd, Sunshine. You will find the dojo by taking the first corridor to the right after passing the main reception desk. Follow the signs and turn left as you enter the gym weight room and proceed down to the back left hallway. I would like to thank all the students and parents for their help through out the setup and move. It showed that we have a great family club which is an extension of our promotion of the Samurai family status that we have within the training environment. We have sent out a set of rules that we would like everyone to sign. There is a section in there for parents not staying at the dojo as we will potentially block that hall way. We are trailing allowing parents to stay, so if we want this option to continue please assist in following these parameters. 1 If you are staying please stay in the rear left hallway space & don't hang around the area where the equipment is. 2 No food to be brought down into the gym and all rubbish to be taken away with you, small rubbish can be put in any available bins. 3 All children must be controlled at all times and not left to run freely (safety risk) 4 Students to mainly stay in the dojo to free up space for the parents. So students not to take up seating if parents are standing. 5 Use common sense and help police these issues so we can maintain the freedom of the area. The female toilets are located in the rear corridor near the dojo entrance. The disabled toilets are also located in this area and male students under 15 years are to use this toilet. All male students 15 years and over are to use the male toilets/change rooms located near the front entrance of the building near the treadmill room. All suggestions will be evaluated and taken up if it is in best interest of Gym, the business & our members. Thanks again looking forward to the next 20 years There was plenty of enthusiasm last Saturday afternoon at the Laverton dojo during a beginners class held for the Family Active Program for the Karen community refugees. Sensei Ian Barlow has moved from the UK to set up the newest Samurai dojo in Merriwa, Western Australia. Sensei Ian joined the Victorian team at the AFK Nationals & was quite excited by the standard of competition. We wish Sensei Ian all the best! Victoria University PhD researcher and program co-ordinator Tea O’Driscoll has organised 8 weeks of various activities for the local Karen community. The families participating had led very active lifestyles in their Burmese (Myanmar) homeland, but many stopped playing sports since migrating to Australia. Tea’s research suggests a major reason for this is that structured exercise here looks very different to the casual and incidental nature of community sports back home. The Laverton dojo was invited to participate in the program for two weeks and the first session was held last Saturday with great success. The adult and children participants were very enthusiastic and had a great time learning basic stances, punching & blocking. The last session will be this Saturday at the Laverton Community Hub from .
