Educational Opportunity Programs - Transitional Programs Summer Component Residential Bridge (RB) Job Announcements for: Academic Mentors, Resident Mentors & Office Assistant/Mentors DESCRIPTION: EOP Transitional Programs is seeking highly motivated and responsible individuals willing to commit to a challenging opportunity. The 2014 EOP Transitional Programs at California State University, Northridge is intended to help students build on their academic skills and assist with their acclimation to the university environment. The design and implementation of the intensive transitional program incorporates university-wide coordination and cooperation. Bridge is designed to provide the students with a comprehensive introduction to the university, basic skills development in the areas of reading and writing, study techniques, a student support network, an increased pride in their ethnic identity and greater understanding of the diversity of their fellow students. This year’s program will begin with intensive introductory workshops and activities necessary to complete the Bridge curriculum of course work (6 units), tutorial assistance, and related skills development. EOP Transitional Programs 2014 - Bridge Mentor Job Descriptions - Residential 1 RB Academic Mentor in any of the following disciplines: Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, in particular: Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies, Pan African Studies; Strong background in Reading/Writing Skills; Computer Literacy is highly desirable. Academic Mentors are required to continue their employment as an Academic Mentor with the class cohort in the Fall 2014 & Spring 2015 semesters. Academic Mentors work under the direct supervision of the EOP Transitional Programs Director and Program Assistants. COMPENSATION: $1,700.00 plus training. Position requires minimum 6 hours per day - some evening hours Will be required to work opening weekend. QUALIFICATIONS: • Minimum of two years as matriculated student at CSUN • Applicants must be in a good academic standing (i.e., not on probation), and must have a cumulative 2.75 GPA and in subject area(s) • Completion of 60+ units of undergraduate work is preferred • Completion of training required for final selection • Applicants must have demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, positively, and clearly • Applicants must have demonstrated to be sensitive to the social and educational conditions affecting a diverse student population • Applicants must have demonstrated ability to interrelate well with others. Ability to be flexible and adapt to work as a team member • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain trusting, productive relationship with student participants, program staff and faculty • Demonstrated experience with Mentoring • Ability to work as a team member • Demonstrated maturity, responsibility and reliability • Undergraduates preferred • Experience with EOP summer transitional programs is preferred • EOP/Bridge alumni preferred DUTIES: • Serve as a mentor to assigned students by providing guidance, support and accurate information • Consider all information regarding students as confidential and share information only with appropriate Bridge staff • The Academic Mentor is expected to provide assistance to the Bridge Program students on an individual and group basis as assigned, emphasizing the basic skills necessary to master the subject and complete the course requirements • Provide follow-up on class assignments and special assistance to students in consultation with program faculty • Facilitate Study Sessions two hours a day from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. – four days a week • Conduct study sessions with skill and sensitivity at all times • Develop success plans throughout the six weeks to assist students achieve the necessary requirements as determined by faculty and Program EOP Transitional Programs 2014 - Bridge Mentor Job Descriptions - Residential 2 • Develop an effective academic mentoring relationship with each student • Required to attend and help support and facilitate opening weekend activities, e.g. registration, book distribution, ice breakers, film discussion, etc. • Provide support for Closing Day Activities • Required to attend evening films • Assist in facilitation of film discussions • Encourage attendance of all extra-curriculum activities • Maintain a student file to include services provided and progress of students • Facilitate study sessions in the evening hours as needed • Be thoroughly familiar with the courses material including knowledge of the syllabus assignments, exam schedules, and competency in all materials covered in the courses • Become proficient at and practice the skills presented in training activities • Consult with appropriate Bridge staff and faculty regarding any needs to ensure continued effectiveness • Professional demeanor is required at all times • Work cooperatively with the Residential component of Transitional Programs to ensure students receive maximum level of consistent academic assistance • Perform other duties as appropriate or assigned RESIDENT MENTOR - Resident Mentors are full-time, live-in positions in which staff will be responsible for the student’s total residential experience. COMPENSATION: $1,850.00 including room and board plus training. Will be required to move in 2 days before start of Program Resident Mentors work under the direct supervision of the EOP Transitional Programs Director and Program Assistants QUALIFICATIONS: • Minimum of two years as a student at CSUN • Must have demonstrated experience of effectively working with diverse economically disadvantaged students • Applicants must be in a good academic standing (i.e., not on probation) • Demonstrated ability to problem solve in a fair and equitable fashion • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively • Ability to be flexible and adapt to a variety of situations • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain trusting, productive relationships with student participants, program staff and faculty • Demonstrated experience with Mentoring • Ability to work as a team member • Demonstrated maturity, responsibility and reliability EOP Transitional Programs 2014 - Bridge Mentor Job Descriptions - Residential 3 • Experience in residential life highly desirable • Completion of training required for final selection • Applicants must be sensitive to the social and educational conditions affecting a diverse student population • Undergraduates preferred • EOP/Bridge Alumni preferred • 60 units of undergraduate work preferred DUTIES: • Serve as a mentor to assigned students by providing guidance, support and accurate information • Consider all information regarding students as confidential and share information only with appropriate Bridge Staff • Assist in maintaining a learning environment ensuring the safety and discipline of student participants • Assist and support in the facilitation of the opening and closing day activities • Direct supervision and responsibility of- but not limited to- assigned group of students • Assist other resident mentors and/or Transitional Program’s staff in supervision of all participants • Assist in developing, organizing and implementing special activities • Accompany student participants on any extra-curricular activity; i.e., meeting, film nights, field trip and/or any other Bridge activity • Accompany students to and from classes the first week.
