Both the Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours) and the Graduate Diploma in Psychology* are recognised by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as accredited fourth year programs. BACHELOR OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SCIENCE (HONOURS) Commonwealth supported program. GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN PSYCHOLOGY* Admission Requirements As a minimum, applicants must have completed within the last 5 years, a Bachelor degree including all of the following: oo An accredited 3 year sequence in psychology; oo At least a credit average across all units of the pass degree; oo A minimum of four out of all the 2nd and/ or 3rd year psychology units on the applicant’s transcript must have at least a distinction mark for Honours applicants and a credit mark for Postgraduate Diploma applicants; Fee paying Note that the fees for both courses may be deferred (do not have to be paid up front) The programs provide students who have already completed an accredited 3-year undergraduate sequence in psychology with the opportunity for advanced level study in specialised topic areas in psychology. oo At least a pass in the prerequisites for units to be undertaken in the fourth year. Applicants meeting these minimal requirements are ranked on their results for second and third year psychology units. Places in the 4th year programs are then offered on a competitive basis, based on the quality of the applicants. COMMENCEMENT The programs commence at the beginning of the academic year. (www.acu.edu.au/apply_and_enrol/) GRADUATE OUTCOMES Students who complete the Honours or Graduate Diploma programs will be eligible for provisional registration as a psychologist in any Australian state or territory. COURSE STRUCTURE Students are required to complete a total of 6 units (80 cp) including: oo Research project or thesis units (40 cp) oo Research Methods (10 cp) oo Professional Issues and Ethics (10 cp) oo Assessment and Intervention (10 cp) oo One elective unit (10cp) (Note: cp = credit points) of academic and research expertise. The material in these units will be of an advanced nature, offering critical engagement with and immersion in cutting edge research and innovation. Thus, the units provide the unique opportunity for an in-depth examination of contemporary perspectives on and interpretation of recent trends in the field of applied psychology. PSYC410/421 HONOURS THESIS A & B (IN HONOURS) In the fourth year course, students will conduct original research independently and prepare a thesis based on the results of this work. Along with individualised supervision, the units above provide support for the completion of the thesis. PSYC425 ADVANCED TOPICS IN APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY PSYC424 RESEARCH METHODS This unit focuses on principles of research design and approaches in psychological research, including experimental methods, observational and survey methods and qualitative procedures. PSYC426 ADVANCED TOPICS IN COGNITION PSYC413 PROFESSIONAL ISSUES AND ETHICS This unit introduces students to important issues related to professional practice in psychology. Ethics of professional psychological practice and research will be studied including a detailed consideration of the Australian Psychological Society’s Code of Ethics and consideration of legislative and legal issues relevant to psychological practice. HEALTH SCIENCES This unit familiarises students with the theoretical and empirical bases underpinning (i) the construction, implementation, and interpretation of some of the more widely used cognitive, neuropsychology and personality assessment tools; and (ii) a range of evidence based approaches to psychological interventions. Topics may be drawn from one or more distinct aspects of developmental psychology including (but not limited to) biological, perceptual-motor, cognitive, social, emotional, personality and identity, and moral development at different stages of the lifespan. PSYC428 ADVANCED TOPICS IN SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY Students select one of two electives for the second semester of the course. PSYC427 ADVANCED TOPICS IN DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY PSYC423 ASSESSMENT AND INTERVENTION ELECTIVE (TWO OFFERED EACH YEAR) *This program is currently not AQF compliant (current course title - Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology). It is currently undergoing review and is expected to be fully AQF compliant for 2015. Topics may be drawn from one or more applied aspects of psychology and could include (but not limited to) to applied topics in clinical psychology; counselling psychology; health psychology; forensic psychology; cognitive psychology; sports psychology; and neuropsychology. Topics may be drawn from one or more distinct aspects of social psychology including (but not limited to) self-perception, social perception, social influence, social interaction and relationships and the applications of social psychology.
