Workshop on Tourism
and the Creative Economy
Through the joint initiative “creative
region”, the City of Linz & Upper Austria
support growth and success in and beyond the
creative economy and position Linz and Upper
Austria as a creative place. The creative
region initiative implements projects and
services tailored to creative smes and their
culture and industry partners. A new report by the oecd Tourism Committee
highlights the opportunities and benefits from
linking tourism and creativity and the need
for active and coherent policies to achieve
this potential and link the various actors and
resources.

TOURISM
Linz has developed in the recent years into an
important cultural and creative city. Interesting
buildings and institutions, such as the Ars
Electronica Center, LENTOS Kunstmuseum
Linz and Tabakfabrik, and significant
festivals, such as the Ars Electronica Festival,
nextcomic Festival, Crossing Europe Film
Festival and Klangwolke (Cloud of Sound),
create a lot of interaction between artists,
politics and society. Linz was European Capital
of Culture 2009 and is currently applying for
the title unesco Creative City of Media Arts,
to further strengthen its cultural identity and its
relevance in urban life, the local economy and in
social development.
Mature tourism destinations face increased
international competition from a growing
number of emerging destinations worldwide
and are challenged by more informed and
demanding tourists. Linking tourism with
the creative industries can give fresh impetus
to the design of tourism experiences and the
revitalisation of tourism products. It can add
atmosphere to destinations, improve place
image and enrich tourism communication and
marketing. The application of new technologies
plays a vital role.
In working more closely together, the
knowledge and experience of the different
creative sectors can bring valuable innovation
and creativity to tourism. At the same time the
tourism industry and the tourists are important
customers for creative goods and services, with
a high potential to open up new opportunities
e.g. for networking and export.
This event will bring together international
experts from tourism and the creative industries
and will give space for the presentation of trends
and the exchange of visions and new ideas. It
will enrich the international discussion and
contribute to the dissemination of the key policy
results of the oecd report Tourism and the
Creative Economy. The report will be launched
during the event.

Information on Ars Electronica
Ars Electronica made its debut on September 18,
1979. This festival of art, technology and society
spotlighted the emerging Digital Revolution.
Within a few years, Ars Electronica developed
into one of the world’s foremost media art
festivals. And its growing success was paralleled
by the expansion of its annual lineup of events.
For more than three decades now, this world
renowned event has provided an annual setting
for artistic and scientific encounters with social
and cultural phenomena that are the upshot of
technological change. Symposia, exhibitions,
performances and interventions carry these
inquiries beyond the confines of conventional
conference spaces and cultural venues and take
them out into the public sphere and throughout
the cityscape.
But the attractiveness of Ars Electronica isn’t
attributable solely to participation by renowned
scientists and artists from all over the world,
or to remarkable venues. Above all, it’s the
international audience that makes the biggest
contribution to the festival spirit: the colorful
mix of old friends and new faces who conjure up
extraordinary circumstances a “fruitful state of
emergency” every September in Linz.
