The American Pathology Foundation (APF) is a non-profit professional society devoted to the
business of pathology. Founded in 1959, the Foundation provides quality educational programs,
practice management resources and networking opportunities for its members. Each educational
topic within the Foundation’s programs is carefully selected and developed to meet pathologists’
and practice managers’ most current needs and provide them with practical information for implementation within their practices.
THE FOUNDATION’S PRIMARY OBJECTIVES ARE:
• To promote the practice of pathology in all of its
branches, through scientific, cultural, educational and
charitable means.
• To cooperate with other professional organizations to
develop the professional practice, art and science of
medicine in general and pathology in particular.
• To enhance the ability of pathologists and practice managers to
effectively manage their practice, time and resources.
• To be a resource for pathologists and practice managers who
wish to expand their knowledge of scientific, legislative, political
and marketplace developments which affect the practice of
pathology.
CME Mission statEMEnt
The American Pathology Foundation provides modern medical management
information (PURPOSE) focused on the practice of anatomic and clinical
pathology, as well as a forum for information exchange (CONTENT) through
continuing medical education for practicing pathologists and pathology
managers in North America, our target audience. The Foundation cosponsors live seminars in pathology, and disseminates medical management
information through our educational programs and other member
communications (ACTIVITIES and SERVICES). The APF anticipates that
this activity will enhance the ability of board-certified pathologists to more
effectively manage their medical practice, valuable time, financial and
laboratory resources (EXPECTED RESULTS).

Medicare & CPt Changes for 2014:
regain your sanity!
CMS delivered several strikes against pathologists and
laboratories in December with its physician fee schedule
and hospital outpatient final rules for 2014. Several key
pathology organizations have made efforts since then to
petition CMS to provide relief to the harshest of these
policy changes. This session will examine where we stand
on immunohistochemistry, prostate biopsy, molecular
test, clinical lab fee schedule revaluation, payment
bundling, and related Medicare issues. Work-around tips
for pathology coding will be provided and discussed.

iCd-10-CM transition: deep in the Weeds
Brenda Cox, Pathology Resource Consultants,
Wimberley, TX
Transitioning to ICD-10-CM requires much more than
simply getting used to dealing with five times the number
of codes in the ICD-9-CM codebook. Many of the
ground-rules, protocols, and lookup techniques you’re
accustomed to will change. During this session we’ll dig
deep into the practical matters you need to know to
successfully navigate the ICD 10-CM codebook.
