“International Leader Training Program for
Sustainable Use of Water and Resources”
Environmental Education Activity - Mizushirube On September 25th 2013, three SUW
students joined the environmental
education activity along with 4 th-grade
students of Katsuki Elementary School at
“Sasaogawa Mizubeno Gakkou (Sasao
River Edge School)” (located in
Yahata-nishi ward of Kitakyushu city).
This was the 2 n d -time joint activity since
last year between Katsuki Elementary
School, Council for Sasao River Edge
School, Ongagawa Office of River and
SUW program of the University of Kitakyushu.
The objective of the activity was to make
elementary students interested in the aquatic
environment by examining the “Mizushirube”
-survey developed by Ministry of the
Environment (http://www.env.go.jp/water/wsi/).
The “Mizushirube” -survey offers 5 indicators
to evaluate the aquatic environment, (i)
natural shape of river (water volume and
man-made structures such as a dam), (ii)
variety of creatures (abundance of aquatic
creatures and their living spaces), (iii) purity
of water (water quality), (iv) pleasance as
water edge (cleanness and calmness felt by
the five senses), and (v) connection with
local community (history and involvement
with local human society).
SUW students, as assistant instructors,
showed how to measure “purity of water” with
transparency, smell and chemical oxygen
demand (COD), and “pleasance as water
edge” with feeling the scenery, finding
trashes, touching water, smelling the river
and listening to the river sound.
Through this activity, SUW students
themselves learnt the new river evaluating
method, and they were impressed with the
elementary school students and local
citizens working together. All participating
SUW students felt meaningfulness of the
environmental education activity connected
with the local community, and expressed their
gratitude to be able to contribute on the
activity. SUW wishes to continue to dispatch
students on these activities.

環境教育活動 ‒みずしるべ‒
2013年9月25日、
「笹尾川水辺の楽校」(北九州市八幡西区)に
て、
香月小学校４年生に対する環境教育活動にSUW学生３名が参
加した。本活動は、香月小学校、笹尾川水辺の楽校推進協議会、遠
賀川河川事務所と北九州市立大学SUWプログラムが共同で実施
したもので、
昨年度に続き2回目である。
本活動の目的は、環境省作成の
「水辺のすこやかさ指標(みずし
るべ)」(http://www.env.go.jp/water/wsi/)に準じた調査を通じ
て、小学生に水環境に関心を持ってもらうことである。
「みずし
るべ」では、川の自然なすがた(水量や堰など人口構造物の有無)、
ゆたかな生きもの(生きものの豊かさや棲み場)、
水のきれいさ(水
質)、快適な水辺(見る、聞く、触れるなど五感に感じるきれいさと
静かさ)、地域とのつながり(川にまつわる歴史や人の暮らしとの
かかわり)という5つの指標(ものさし)で、
水環境を評価する。
SUW学生は、指導補助員として、
「水のきれいさ」評価項目で
ある透視度や水のにおい、COD(化学的酸素要求量)の測定指導、
および
「快適な水辺」
評価項目の景色(感じる)、ごみ(見る)、水との
ふれあい(触る)、川のかおり(かぐ)、川の音(聞く)の評価指導を
行った。
本活動を通じて、指導対象となる小学生のみならず、SUW学生
自身も、新しい河川の評価方法を理解し、子供たちや地域の人た
ちとの触れ合いに感銘を受けたようである。彼ら全員が、この地
域に根ざした環境教育活動に意義を感じており、これに貢献で
きて良かったと述べている。今後も同様の活動に継続して学生
を派遣したい。

SUW Regional Contribution through Practical Trainings
Since its establishment in 2009, SUW has implemented a variety of
practical trainings, including on-campus trainings such as the
Environmental Water Chemistry Training to master water quality
analysis and the presentation skill trainings at the University Open
Campus and at the Sangaku-renkei Exhibition. Also SUW has
contributed to the local community through the off-campus trainings
such as the environmental education to elementary school students
and the lectures to Kitakyushu citizens.
In the environmental education to elementary school students, a
total of 30 SUW students made contributions totaling 180 hours of
education activities. The activities were for elementary school in
Kitakyushu region, and implemented with the cooperation of local
organizations such as the Kitakyushu City Environmental
Preservation Association, NPO Onga River Basin Residents
Association and the Council for Sasao River Edge School. The
educational activities included the Murasakigai-shellfish seawater
purification and composting, the Dokai Bay survey on bottom
sediment and water quality, the river creature survey, and the
Mizushirube river environment survey. The participating SUW
students improved their educational skills and environmental survey
techniques by contributing to the local environmental education
activities.
In the lectures to Kitakyushu citizens, a total of 24 SUW students
made contributions totaling 76 hours of lecturing activities. In
the lectures held at the Kitagata Campus of the University of
Kitakyushu, SUW
international students
(China, Mongolia, Vietnam,
Bangladesh, the
Philippines, Uzbekistan,
Samoa, Peru, Bolivia
and Barbados), with the
instruction of their research
supervisors explained the
environmental problems

occurring in their home
countries. In the lectures held at Anogakusha (located in
Yahata-nishi ward of Kitakyushu city), the SUW international
students from Vietnam, Samoa and Bolivia presented
environmental and cultural information about their countries. The
activities were good opportunities for students to improve their
presentation and communication skills as well as to research on
their home countries, and for participants it was a good opportunity
to learn about foreign countries.
SUW students made contributions to on-campus activities as well.
For example, SUW students were favorably appointed as
attendants for visitors from foreign educational/research institutes.
When a group from Dalian University of Technology (China) visited
the University of Kitakyushu, SUW Chinese students assisted with
the tour. Upon the visits by Vietnamese delegates from Hanoi
University of Science and the Danang University, SUW Vietnamese
students made presentations. Upon the request from Kitakyushu
YMCA to hold an information session about undergraduate
admission, SUW international students from China, Mongolia and
Vietnam played a supportive role. In these activities, the
international students brought an absolute advantage of
communicating with the visitors/participants in their native
languages, and contributed on the successful outcomes. The
activities were, for the international students themselves, good
opportunities to improve their skills through preparation and
implementation as attendants and presenters.

SUW実習活動を通じての地域貢献
SUWは、2009年の発足以来、様々な技能実習を実施してきた。
その中には、水質分析手法を習得する水環境化学実習、大学オー
プンキャンパスや産学連携フェアにおける発表実習など、学内
で完結するものばかりでなく、小学生を対象とした環境教育や
市民を対象とした講座など、地域に貢献する活動も多く含まれ
ている。
小学生を対象とした環境教育実習では、SUW学生のべ30名が
180時間の実習活動を行った。実習は、(財)北九州市環境整備協
会、NPO法人遠賀川流域住民の会、笹尾川水辺の楽校運営協議会
などの地域団体と協同で実施し、北九州地域の小学校から対象
者を募集した。教育内容には、ムラサキガイによる海水浄化と堆
肥化、洞海湾の底泥および水質の調査、河川生物調査、河川環境
調査(みずしるべ)などが含まれ、SUW学生は教育および環境調査
手法を修練しつつ、地域の環境教育活動に貢献した。
一般市民を対象とした講座では、SUW学生のべ24名が76時間
の講義実習活動を行った。北九州市立大学北方キャンパスにお
ける講座では、SUW留学生が教員指導の下、自国(中国、モンゴ
ル、ベトナム、バングラデシュ、フィリピン、ウズベキスタン、サ
モア、ペルー、ボリビア、バルバドス)における環境問題の状況を
解説した。また、穴生学舎(北九州市八幡西区)における講座では、
ベトナム、サモア、ボリビアのSUW留学生が情報提供を行った。
実習を通じ、学生にとっては、発表技術、コミュニケーションス
キルを研鑽するとともに、自国の状況を詳細に調べなおす良い
機会となった。また、講座参加者にとっては新たな情報や発見に
触れる良い機会となった。
SUW学生は学内活動にも大いに貢献した。例えば、海外の教
育・研究機関からの訪問団のアテンドとして、SUW学生が積極的
に採用された。中国、大連理工大学一団の来学に際しては、SUW
在籍の中国人留学生が訪問団の視察に対応した。また、ベトナ
ム、ハノイ科学大学やダナン大学の来学に際しては、SUW在籍の
ベトナム人留学生が広報活動を行った。北九州YMCAから語学留
学生向けの学部入学に関する情報提供を求められた際にも、中
国、モンゴル、ベトナムのSUW留学生が補助的役割を果たした。
これらの活動において、彼らは、対象者と母国語で対話できると
いう絶対的な付加価値をもたらし、活動の成功に大きく貢献し
た。留学生らにとっても、アテンドや説明に際する準備と実践
が、能力向上に役立った。
このように、SUWにおける技能実習は、学生本人の技術向上に
加え、地域における環境教育や学内活動への貢献など、多くの付
加価値を生み出したと言える。

SUW Environmental Leader Newsletter
“SUW” is the University of Kitakyushu’s educational program to
nurture environmental leaders. Through the SUW program,
Japanese and international graduate students are trained to be
environmental leaders, who will take actions on water and
resource-related environmental problems with comprehensive
understanding of their causes, influences and preventative/remedial
measures.
SUWは環境リーダー育成を目的とした北九州市立大学の教育プロ
グラムです。SUWプログラムを通じ、国連ミレニアム開発目標でも
緊急性の高い水資源・水環境と資源循環の問題を、原因、影響、対策
の側面から俯瞰的に捉え、行動するリーダーを育てます。
The SUW project is funded by Funds for Integrated Promotion of
Social System Reform and Research and Development, Ministry
of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT),
Japan, and operated by the University of Kitakyushu.
