AWB Environmental Practices Award
Sustainable
Manufacturing
AWB, the Association of Washington Business, is
an advocate for the business community, and is
recognized as the state’s chamber of commerce,
manufacturing and technology association.
Canyon Creek has been incorporating green technology into our
manufacturing since 1991. Our
long-standing commitment to
the environment encompasses
everything from energy use,
resource conservation and
recycling, to low-VOC finishes
and sustainable products. As a
result of our focus, we were the
first cabinet company awarded
the KCMA’s Environmental
Stewardship Program Certificate.
Canyon Creek was recently awarded the 2014 Leading
Environmental Practices award from AWB, which
recognizes companies for their initiative, innovation and
achievements in environmental issues.
With a long history of environmental stewardship, we
work to find creative ways to reduce energy and materials
consumption–even converting our material waste into
products other companies can use. Our wood wastes,
such as sawdust and shavings, are collected and recycled/
repurposed by other companies, as are the solvents and
acetones used in our finishing process.
Canyon Creek’s products are also in compliance with both the California Air Resources
Board (CARB) and the 4-Star certification system used in Japan, which place strict limits
on formaldehyde emissions in building products. Our entire fleet of trucks is Clean Idle
Certified, meaning they use clean diesel technology that reduces vehicle emissions.
On the recycling front, we have programs in place to
manage paper, plastic, cardboard, metals, soda cans
and water bottles. The metal banding used for incoming
product packaging is chopped up and recycled, as is
any metal and wire scrap generated by the maintenance
department. Assembly areas are “swept” with magnetic rods
each day to collect metal fall-off and retrieve screws, all of
which are recycled.
In the finish department, waste is managed on multiple levels:
• A fluid delivery system in the spray booths re-circulates
stains and clear coat from a central paint kitchen “as needed.”
• Color changers at the stain lines allow just 2 spray guns per
booth to spray all 40 standard colors.
• Flush boxes allow one gun to be used for spraying while the
other gun sits in the box and is flushed and loaded with the
next color, reducing in-line waste.
• A solvent recovery system reclaims and reuses the waste
acetone used during finish department cleaning procedures. This has reduced our
annual purchase of virgin acetone for line flushing by over 90%. The waste acetone is
re-distilled and sold to other companies for cleaning metal products.

New Options In Stain, Wood Species, Doors And More!
We constantly monitor the homebuilding industry and
evaluate our product range to make sure we’re offering
you the most useful, interesting and decorative items
available. You can always visit the “What’s New” section
of our website to see what we’ve added!
Graphite Stain. Our newest stain color comes right out of
our Special Product Request (SPR) program–this proved to
be such a popular color that we added it to our standard
offering. Graphite is a warm grey-brown color, and is a bit
of a chameleon; on some species it reads more brown,
while on Maple it appears almost entirely grey. Graphite is
offered in all of our product lines–just make sure you order
a door sample so you can see how your chosen species
looks before you order cabinets!
Drawer Guides w/6-Way Adjustment. We’ve simplified
our drawer guide selection for Cornerstone and Millennia,
and made the Under Mount Full Extension Guide with
inMotion (UMFEG-IM) standard (no more upcharges for
soft-close drawers!) The new guides come with a nifty clip
that lets you move drawers side-to-side, front-to-back and
up-down for a perfect fit. Download the adjustment PDF
New Doors for Katana. With a unique beveled inner
profile, Edgewater (wood) and Kincaid (painted) are a
welcome addition to our mitered styles. Amherst (wood)
and Essex (painted) have an applied moulding “frame”
around the recessed center panel. All four doors are
exclusive to Katana, our value frameless line.
Carbonized Bamboo. When used as a building material,
natural bamboo is a light yellow color, similar to straw.
When carbonized, or pressure heated, the sugars in
bamboo turn a rich, dark amber or caramel shade. Long
used for flooring, carbonized bamboo has become a
popular choice for cabinets and furniture. We offer it with a
clear finish in our Millennia frameless line.
And don’t forget “Pick Your Paint”–from
the paint chip right to your cabinets!

4 Ways To Add Stone To Your Home
If you’re searching for a way to give your home a
natural boost, consider using stone. This versatile
material can be used in any room, whether you’re
looking for a rustic or modern style.
Create a beautiful accent wall in your bedroom or
living room with an entire wall made of stone. It’s the
perfect backdrop for any room and can be glammed
up with luxurious linens and a sparkling chandelier
or given a country farmhouse vibe with plenty of
reclaimed wood and subdued colors.
In your shower, add an earthy vibe by using stone
tiles on the walls. Surround your shower with glass
to maximize on space in your bathroom and draw
the eye in to the stone material.
Try veneer stone to surround your fireplace. The stone offers a cool, contemporary accent to the warmth of the fire.
Complement your stone wall with a chunky wood mantel to create an appealing focal point.
Enhance your kitchen design with an island constructed out of sleek and stylish stone. Contrast the material with
granite or warm wood and use under-counter lighting to highlight the stunning detailing on the stone.
Creative Ways To Use Flowers
Filling your home with fresh flowers is a simple and
inexpensive way to add color and personality to any
room. Typically, we place the blooms in vases, but this
isn’t the only vessel in which to put your flowers on
display. Here are a few unique ways to show off
colorful buds:
Sprinkle petals on a surface–place a few flower petals all over your table for a fresh pop of color in your
kitchen, or go for romance and sprinkle them in the
bathtub. Put a couple of intact blooms in a vintage
glass bottle on the vanity cabinet.
Take a large bowl or a few tall cylinders and fill them
with water. Tuck in a couple of floating candles, then
add blooms on top of the water for a restful way to
display your flowers. Choose styles that are large
enough to not get soaked by the water–peonies or
gerbera daisies are good options.
Having a garden party? Line up colorful garden boots
with vases of flowers inside, or put a row of Mason
jars full of flowers down the center of the table. Give
your outdoor kitchen some color by filling light bulbs
with some water and a few fresh-cut flowers. Hang
them from tree branches for a unique display.

Avoiding Common DIY Mistakes
Planning a renovation, whether it’s your kitchen cabinets or your whole
house, can be stressful. But if you are equipped with the right advice
(and the right tools!) the process will go smoothly and you’ll be thrilled
with the results.
Double-check measurements. “Measure twice, cut once” is a classic piece
of advice for a reason. Make sure you verify all measurements to avoid
getting the wrong-sized piece of furniture or window treatment. It will
save you time, frustration and money.
Take time to prep the space. An important step when you are painting,
replacing appliances or installing cabinetry is to prep the area. Lay down
drop cloths, tape edges and measure the space carefully. Nobody likes this
step, but it will ensure that the finished product will match your vision.
Choose quality materials. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay
for. If you skimp on materials, you may be left with a lackluster kitchen
design. It can helpful to consult with a designer about where to put the
highest quality items, and where you can use less expensive options.
Rethink Your Kitchen Drawers
Kitchen drawers can easily be cluttered with silverware and
other utensils. However, by re-thinking exactly how you’re
using these drawers, you can turn them into something
that’s organized and more functional for your kitchen.
Consider using the larger, deeper drawers for storing
dinnerware or pots and pans. All you have to do is pull out
the drawer for easy access. Use pegs or dividers to reduce
noise and keep every item neatly stacked in one place.
Your drawers are there to improve the function of your
kitchen design, so think about what’s in each drawer. Are
your oven mitts and trivets located in a drawer near your
oven? If not, you might want to think about rearranging the
contents of each drawer to make kitchen essentials more
readily available when you need them.
While you have the drawers emptied out, Install brightly
hued or patterned liners in each of your drawers for a pop
of color. Having that fun design at the bottom of your
drawers will inspire you to keep them clean and organized
on an ongoing basis.
