Jeannette Lynch - Supervisor: Dr Michael Moore
Title: Development of a brief questionnaire to measure patients’ beliefs and their relationship to treatment adherence and outcome.
Jeannette Lynch completed 2012 - Jeanette Lynch successfully completed her part time PhD in 2012. Jeanette developed and validated a brief
questionnaire (Beliefs about Depression Questionnaire (BDQ)) to explore patients beliefs about depression. Then using this instrument undertook a
longitudinal survey of patients presenting in primary care with recent onset of depression (n=292). Primary outcome was the change in depression
scores (HAD-D). There was good retention in the study with 227/292 (78%) participants completing questionnaires at 6 month follow up. Initial
severity of depression at baseline, and beliefs about cause, consequences and timeline of depression predicted poorer outcomes, whereas a belief in
using exercise or keeping busy to treat depression (self-efficacy behaviour) was predictive of lower depression scores at six months follow-up.
Medication did not appear to mediate these relationships. These findings will need to be replicated in further studies.
