Armacell Spiralflex Duct Liner Installation Instructions

Armacell Spiralflex Duct Liner
Installation Instructions
The temperature of the air and of the insulation should be between 40 degrees F and 100 degrees F at the time of the
installation. Surface to be insulated must be clean and free of any loose particles, dirt, dust or other debris such as rust.
Prepare the inner surface (Figure 1a) by thoroughly cleaning the entire inner surface with denatured alcohol. This must be
done even for new sheet metal to remove all the oil residue or debris off the surface.
Always use a sharp, non serrated edge knife and a straightedge when making cuts. This will allow for even edge cuts on all
seams, preventing possible gaps. Rough cuts may create gaps in butt edges.
1. Start by measuring the inner circumference of the spiral duct using a thin, narrow strip of the same thickness Armacell
Spiralflex Duct Liner being used. (Figure 1b) Wrap around the inside of the duct. Do not stretch the strip. Be certain that the
strip is making complete contact with the entire metal surface of the duct and no gaps are present between the insulation
and the wall of the duct. This measurement should be documented, and transferred onto the Armacell Spiralflex Duct Liner
roll for each precut piece. It is recommended to only cut the Spiralflex as wide as the roll is, to follow the natural curvature of
the Spiralflex and insuring a nice tight fit against the inner wall.

2. Keep the Armacell Spiralflex Duct Liner in Figure 2a as clean as possible when laying out to measure, and cut for
installation into the duct. After the measurement has been transferred to each side of the roll, use a straightedge and
a sharp, non serrated edge knife to cut the piece out. This measurement can now be used for all additional straight
pieces. Apply 520 Adhesive or 520 BLV to each side of the longitudinal seam prior to the installation into the duct. Be
sure to allow the 520 Adhesive, or 520 BLV to completely reach tackiness. 520 BLV requires longer tack time than
standard 520 Adhesive. 520 BLV must be dry to the touch (4 mins) before adhering adjoining seams (Contact Armacell
Customer Service for any questions on 520 BLV). Start at one end of the pre-cut section, making sure to evenly align
the outside edge when joining together, and apply 100% pressure to the entire joint in Figure 2b to finish the adhesion
step.

3. Measure 2 inches on each side of the longitudinal seam that has just
been adhered together, and transfer a mark. This is to be used to
evenly apply a 4” piece of tape along the entire seam on the poly side
(Figure 3) prior to installing into the duct. It is recommended to use
Armaflex® Shield 4” Tape, item code # AST10240150, or an equivalent
for this application.

Installation Instructions
4. Each piece of Armacell Spiralflex Duct Liner should be slightly bent inward (Figure 4) opposite of the longitudinal
seam that was adhered together to allow the entire piece to be fit inside the duct.

5. Once the piece is inside the duct, be certain to apply slight pressure onto the surface of the liner to allow it to
completely push against the wall of the duct providing a nice, tight fit against the wall of the duct. (Figure 5) When
the installation is complete, all adjoining edges must be installed with a tight fit against the wall of the duct with no
visible signs of gaps or voids present. After each section has been installed into the duct properly, attach sheet metal
screws to the leading edge of each section from the outside of the duct into the liner. Use a length of screw that does
not protrude through the entire thickness of the liner product. Install approximately 4 screws at opposite sides of the
leading edge section of duct.
Apply slight pressure onto the surface of the liner.
Attach sheet metal screws to the leading edge of
each section.

To insure a proper Armacell Spiralflex Duct Liner installation, do not deviate from above instructions in order. Critical
points to highlight; use only a non serrated edge knife and sharpen as needed to insure clean edges. Clean entire surface
area prior to installing insulation. All adjoining edges and seams must be installed under compression fit method in order
to prevent any gaps. Be certain to apply firm, even pressure to entire surface to attain full adhesion. Do not allow the
sheet metal screws to be thicker than the duct liner thickness being used.
Fittings and Bends:
When insulating odd shapes, fittings, transitions, etc., outline the outside of the shape and fabricate templates from
cardboard or other material. Use this to properly lay out and cut the appropriate pattern from standard Armaflex Duct
Liner product. Insure all edges are completely sealed.
