Ben Tonagel, Principal Greetings, Slicer Parents and Students. This message is from Principal Ben Tonagel and is intended to engage Slicer families in The Slicer Experience. First, P/T Conferences are coming up- Oct. 8 from 5:00-8:00 to be exact. This year we will be signing up for conferences online. Parents can access this tool through the LPCSC website by clicking "Parent Resources" on the far left side of the main page. Next, click "Parent Teacher Conference Registration" and select LPHS. Then, click "Step 2" and follow instructions for signing up for a slot. Registration for conferences will be Tuesday, Sept. 23 through Tuesday, Oct. 7. Parents may still sign up by sending in a note or emailing a teacher. Either way we hope you take the time to visit LPHS. Secondly, we are participating in College Go Week this week at LPHS. A variety of activities are happening to promote education beyond high school. Being College and Career Ready (CCR) is about emphasizing post-secondary training. This includes 2-year degrees, 4-year colleges, the military, apprenticeships, and more. At LPHS we are beginning to focus more on the fact that students need to graduate ready to enter a career or college. College Go Week is so much more than just a focus on universities. Students can and must begin their career plan prior to graduation. Next, LPHS will be giving the PSAT on Oct. 15th. Most sophomores are expected to take this test. The results are used to measure progress towards being College or Career Ready. A new expectation at LPHS is that students demonstrate being college or career ready in some way. Some possible ways to demonstrate CCR currently are: industry certification a special skill credential dual credit attainment qualifying results from the PSAT, ACT, or the SAT Starting next school year the State of Indiana will be giving a new College and Career Readiness test at the high school level and I expect that to be a CCR measure. Regardless of the measures, we are seeking a shared commitment to meeting the CCR outcome for our students. Taking the PSAT is an important step in preparing for life after high school. If a student scores well enough on the PSAT, they will be exempt from the state's Accuplacer test which was a new state required test last school year. It is usually given in the winter. We are strongly encouraging all sophomores to take the PSAT. It's free for sophomores. Juniors who plan to go to a 4year college will benefit from taking this test as well. Because the state does not pay for it for juniors, the cost is $14. Students will be able to sign up with the counselors during lunch throughout College Go Week. The sign up table will be in the cafeteria. Ben Tonagel, Principal Finally, I encourage you to read the “Slicer Manifesto” found on the school website under News from the Principal. I hope it shows you our vision for LPHS. Once a Slicer, Always a Slicer!
