Dear Patrons,
The federal education legislation, No Child Left Behind, mandates that all students must be
proficient on reading and math academic standards by 2014. Schools are expected to make Adequate
Yearly Progress (AYP) toward that goal. The State of Nebraska’s goals for the 2013-14 for Reading and
Math were 100% proficiency and will continue to be 100% until the law or regulations change.
Additional information about how our school district compared to other school districts in the
state is available on the State of the Schools Reports. Past and current reports are available now at the
web site: http://reportcard.education.ne.gov/Default_State.aspx
If a school does not meet the state goal two years in a row, in the same grade level and same
subject, they are identified as “In Need of Improvement.” A school can be released of “Needs
Improvement” status after all subgroups meet the AYP goals for two consecutive years. Platte Center
Elementary is in year 1 of Title I “Needs Improvement” status. Groups of students in reading did not
meet the performance goal for the previous two years. Examples of the data involved are included in the
chart below:

Because of the PLAS (Persistently Low Achieving Schools) status, the Platte Center Title I
School Improvement Compact Committee will develop and implement a multi-year plan to help the
subgroups meet the goals. We invite you to be apart of this committee to assist the school in improving
Reading scores. We want you to be involved with your child’s education. Feel free to contact your
child’s teacher to discuss ways you can assist your child in his/her education.
You may contact Mr. Schrunk if you are interested in more information on the committee or
improvement plan. Please call him at (402-246-3465) if you have any questions about the plan to
improve the academic achievement of all subgroups at Platte Center Elementary or if you would like to
participate on the committee that will develop and monitor the School Improvement Plan. Since Shell
Creek Elementary, our other Lakeview elementary school, is on the PLAS list as well, there is not another
District option for school choice.
Sincerely,
Daryl Schrunk, Platte Center Principal
