bsw admissions frequently asked questions

BSW ADMISSIONS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’S)
(UPDATED NOVEMBER 2014)
1. Question: Is the BSW program offered online?
Response: No, the BSW program is not offered online.
2. Question: If I am currently enrolled into an undergraduate degree, or have completed
an undergraduate degree, how many years will it take to complete the BSW program?
Will I receive credit for any university courses that I have completed?
Response: Those who hold a previous undergraduate degree, or who are half-way
through an undergraduate degree, normally receive transfer credits (after they have
been admitted into the BSW program), towards the electives requirement of the BSW
degree.
The number of transfer credits granted, depends on the type of degree, and the
number of credits completed, in the previous degree. **(This is something that we
cannot give a specific response to in advance and will be determined upon admission
to the program).**
Candidates who have completed a three or four year undergraduate degree typically
are admitted into third year of the BSW program (depending on the number of
transfer credits granted on admission). Typically, theses students are required to
complete third, and fourth year core courses.
This generally translates into 1 ½ - 2 years, of full-time studies, in order to complete
the BSW degree.
**Please note: The year of standing (the year that you come into the BSW program 1st, 2nd, or 3rd) is dependent upon the number of transfer credits granted, on
admission.
1
The transfer credits assessment, is completed AFTER an applicant is admitted into the
BSW program. So, the School of Social Work cannot provide applicants information
about advanced standing prior to that.**
For additional information regarding transfer credits/ advanced standing, please see

3. Question: Is the BSW program offered on a part-time basis?
Response: Yes, but please be aware that when you are a part-time student that you
will need to arrange your schedule, so that your courses are sequenced according to
our program regulations (that is, some courses are pre-requisites for other courses
and you will need to follow these regulations in your program of study).
4. Question: Are the admissions requirements the same for full-time and part-time
applicants?
Response: Yes.
5. Question: What if I am a college diploma holder, or am currently enrolled in a college
program? How many transfer credits will I receive on admission? How long will it take
to complete the BSW degree?
Response: Depends on the type of college diploma an applicant holds. Generally,
college diploma holders will be admitted into second year of an undergraduate
degree, and will therefore need to complete three years’ worth of full-time studies, in
order to graduate with a BSW degree.
Please consult the below link, for information regarding transfer credits, for college
students/ graduates.

9. Question: If I am not able to secure an academic letter of reference for my application
to the BSW program, what do I do?
Response: We do like to receive academic references because we are an academic
program, but in some cases students have problems securing them.
In such cases, we advise applicants to provide two letters of recommendations, from
someone who can comment on their human service/ social change experience.
In such cases, it is important to include an explanation for why you are not including
an academic reference. This could be in the form of a simple note attached to your
supplementary application (it will be helpful for the applicant reviewers to know that
you could not secure an academic reference and the reasons why).
10. Question: How do I determine the type of applicant that I am (i.e. highschool, college,
or university transfer; domestic vs. international applicant etc.)?
Response: Please consult the below link.

the School of Social Work?
Response: No. We do not/ cannot review applications, in advance of submission, to
the school.
14. Question: With regards to the human service/ social change experience (Part III of the
supplementary application), what is considered relevant experience?
Response: The closer the experience is, to the field of Social Work (quality), the better.
We ask applicants to use their judgment, for this section of the application.
15. Question: How competitive is the BSW program?
Response: The BSW program is quite competitive. It is a limited enrollment program.
The number of applications we receive each year exceeds the number of spaces
available, in the program.
16. Question: Does everyone who applies to your program and who meet the criteria, get
in?
Response: Unfortunately not. We have a very competitive program and several
applicants will not get in. If you are not accepted, please review your application
against the guidelines we provide in the application requirements and see if there is
room for improvement (i.e. more volunteer work experience etc.) and then reapply.
Several applicants reapply. Also, there are several points of entry – first, second and
third year.

17. Question: If my application was not successful, can I appeal the decision?
Is it possible to obtain feedback from the school on how I can improve my application
in the future, the next time I apply?
Response: There is no appeal process. Please be assured that our admissions process
is taken very seriously by faculty and staff in the school. Your file will get a thorough
read and will be discussed by the committee before the committee makes its
decisions.
All decisions are final. Re-review of applications is not possible, due to the sheer
volume of applications we receive.
With regards to obtaining feedback on how to improve your application (should you
decide to re-apply in the future) – we do not and cannot do this due to the volume of
applications we receive.
