We now have just over four months till the Summer exams begin. The Year 11s now have the opportunity to make sure that they put in the hard work and commitment to achieve the best results possible. They are a fantastic group of young people and I wish them all the best in the run up to this Summer’s exams. Mr Smith Headteacher Next week is week 2 Name: Form: GENERAL NEWS Cashless Catering and ParentPay I would like to take this opportunity to remind all parents and carers that when crediting your son/daughter’s food and drink allowance, you must allow 24hrs if doing so online and 48hrs if doing so at a PayPoint for the money to appear in the child’s account ready for use. Please be aware that if you credit the account the night before a school day, the transaction may not have completed in time for your child to spend the next day. To avoid the accumulation of debt, we will not be able to provide any students without a sufficient balance on their account to purchase any items. If you have concerns that your child’s account may not have been credited in time for the school day, could you please supply them with a packed lunch. In extreme circumstances where this is not possible, please contact the school to inform us of the situation. Your co-operation in this matter is much appreciated. Mr Smith Assistant Headteacher Year 11 Parents’ Evening Thursday 23rd January 2014 Our Year 11 Parents’ Evening will be held from 4.00pm – 7:00pm on the Thursday 23rd January. Please ensure your son or daughter has arranged appointments for you to meet with their subject teachers. Strong partnerships with parent/carers are a key factor in student success and achievement at JRCS. This is an ideal opportunity for you to discuss academic progress and ways that, as parent/carers, you can support your child’s learning. Please be aware Year 11 reports will be coming home with students today, please bring them with you to Parents’ Evening If you are unable to attend you should contact Ms Duncan, Head of Year 11. Year 11s to visit consortium schools On Monday 27th January parents and Year 11 students are invited to visit the other schools in the Southern Consortium. Students who have applied for courses which are taught at these schools have been invited, and other students are also welcome to attend. Year 11 tutors have given out letters to students. We look forward to meeting with you. We hope that students and parents will take the opportunity to meet the Sixth Form staff and teachers at the other school sites. Ms Keane Deputy Headteacher KS4 Please contact [email protected] if you would like to know more. Sixth Form News Many Year 13s are now receiving offers from their university applications. Congratulations to them! We have some financial help available for students who need it in order to attend auditions or interviews. Students should contact me in the first instance. We are also supporting students who are looking for work or who are not certain about their next steps. Mrs Wren Vice-Principal of the Southern Consortium Later in the term we will be running sessions for parents and students about the student finance system and how to apply for loans and grants for the university and college years. There will be both a morning and an evening session to choose from and we will send a letter home with all the details. Next week AS and A level students will be taking mock exams. Students need to attend as usual, except there will be no tutor time from Monday 20th – Wednesday 22nd January. VIMA III will show the results of these exams as well as BTEC grades showing current progress. Subject teachers will be at the Parents’ Evening on February 13th and will be pleased to discuss results with you. We will be using tutor time and assemblies to talk to the Year 12s about their choices after Sixth Form. As well as information and inspiration from us, I would like to encourage Year 12 students to visit university open days, apply for summer schools and take up other opportunities. There is plenty of help for students to do this; they need to take note of the information and get support from the Sixth Form tutor team and me. Year 11 Saturday Maths Conference Every student doing GCSE Maths has been invited to a Saturday Maths conference on 25th January running from 9:00am until 1:00pm. They have been given a letter with a reply slip that needs returning to Miss Purser if they want to come. The sessions will be covering topics identified as weak areas in the mock exam before Christmas and therefore it is important they attend if they wish to make progress on these. They have been invited to the appropriate session focusing on topics at the right grade for them. If you have any questions, please get your son/daughter to come and see me or email me directly [email protected]. Thanks for your support with this. Miss Purser Maths KS4 Leader JRCS students try out for Panathlon Challenge Letters have gone out to all those eligible to attend, as well as those who are close to completing their awards; their parents/carers will also be receiving a letter. To assist students with completing their awards, I am holding eDofE catch up sessions to help with uploading evidence and getting the awards completed. However, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they have put in and logged the hours and obtained assessors’ reports for each section. On Monday I had the pleasure of accompanying nine of our students who were trying out for the borough team for the Panathlon Challenge. This is an interborough competition in various disability sports which takes place later this term. The students had an opportunity to have a go at various sports including boccia, new age kurling, poly bat, table top cricket, precision bean bag, indoor and wheelchair athletics. The students involved were very enthusiastic and tried hard in all the events that they participated in. We will hear in a few weeks whether or not any of our students have made it to the borough team again this year – fingers crossed – watch this space! The students who represented Jo Richardson so well were: Harry Ely 7A, Seidu Salifu 7A, Vaselina Pencheva 7B, Jon Gilbert 7H, Abigail Jacobs 8B, Georgina Hart 8A, Arnit Gashi 8D, Jadene Holmes 8D and Lucy Carter 10F. The session dates are: Thursdays 23rd and 30th January, 6th and 27th March 1:30pm – 2:05pm in IT5. I will also be available in IT5 on Tuesday 4th March (SPRD Day) 2:30pm – 4:30pm. Students do not have to attend all sessions and can drop in and out of the sessions to suit their needs. Alternatively they can also come to me and make a 1:1 appointment (remembering that I am not normally in school on Mondays). I must have all awards signed off on eDofE by Friday 7th March if students want to attend this celebration event. Ms Montague School Games Co-ordinator Year 8 Bowling Reward Trip I have had to amend the date of the Year 8 bowling reward trip for Gold and Silver ranked students. The trip will now take place on Monday 27th January. All other details within the original letter remain the same. Miss Savva Head of Year 8 Borough Duke of Edinburgh Award Celebration - Week beginning Monday 17th March Barking Town Hall A number of our Year 11, 12 and 13 students will be eligible to attend this ceremony this year to receive their Duke of Edinburgh Award, following a great deal of commitment and hard work during their own time. I would ask parents and carers of those completing their awards to encourage the students to complete their awards online as soon as possible so that we can enjoy celebrating their considerable achievements together later this term. A brand new year calls for some brand new challenges! Here comes the first of the year: Design a poster on “La Chandeleur”. Easy! Right? But here is the trick: your poster must be no more than an A4 sheet of paper. It also has to be well-presented, very colourful, and in French only. As usual, the first three students to bring in their work to the MFL office will be rewarded. Your challenge card (available from Miss Moody) can also be stamped if you can write a short paragraph in French on another piece of paper explaining what this event is about. Please bring your work to the MFL office with all the requirements above to get your prizes. Allez, c’est parti! Mademoiselle Hierso Homework club Homework club is now held in ICT, on the top floor, not in the library. Miss Osland School Librarian GCSE Dance We have received an invitation to access an outstanding resource available for revision in the GCSE Dance unit 1 written paper “Mark Up”. Traditionally the students are stronger in the practical elements of the course, which is excellent as GCSE Dance is 80% practical. However, the 20% of the written paper brings the students’ grade down by an average of two grades, meaning students who are a grade B practically are being awarded a D overall. This resource can support students in cracking that pattern and teaches them how to answer the written paper questions in a very clear and successful way. What is Mark Up?: ‘Mark Up’ is an online service for students to revise for the Unit 1 written paper. Log on to our website each day, view a new specimen exam-style question per day, type your answer online, hit 'submit' and we will mark it and send personal feedback. We will also send exemplar answers to give you a clearer idea of what is expected. When?: Mark Up launches on Wednesday 14 May 2014 and runs for the three weeks leading up to the exam on 4th June. Does it cost?: Yes. Students and parents can either choose their own pay-as-you-go option for £1 a day, or can opt for the whole 21 days in advance at £19. Please note this is an online service and as such advance online payment via PayPal is a requirement. The service is password protected and we will need students’ email addresses in advance in order to generate their individual login. Want to see an example?: We have a specimen example question up on the website Arts-Pool.co.uk to have a look. New Dance Club JRCS dance was thrilled to welcome so many to the new Ballet Club taught by the fabulous Miss Price from The Royal Academy of Dance. Our students once again represented the department and school with such energy and enthusiasm, we can’t wait till next week! Wednesday 3.20pm – 4.20pm DA1.
