NEMR Telecom Announces Winner in National College
Scholarship Program for Rural Youth
May 5, 2014 - NEMR Telecom is pleased to announce that
Whitney Oberman of rural Queen City and a student at Schuyler
County R1 is the recipient of a $2,500 college scholarship from
NEMR Telecom and the Foundation for Rural Service, (FRS) the
philanthropic arm of NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association.

The FRS scholarship program awarded over $98,000 in scholarships to rural youth across the United States. Out of over 1,500 applications received this year, thirty six scholarships were awarded.
The goal of the scholarship program is to help further higher education opportunities among rural high school students. NEMR
Telecom strongly supports the youth of the communities we serve
and is thrilled to sponsor this worthy program.
Scholarship recipients were selected by an independent team of reviewers from the education field. To be eligible, recipients must be sponsored by an NTCA member system, and
must indicate a desire to return to their rural communities once their collegiate studies have

playing field for rural students who often face financial obstacles
in their pursuit of higher education,” said Jim Sherburne, CEO of
NEMR Telecom. “The FRS scholarship 857-4421 program enables rural telecommunications providers to show their support of
the youth living in the communities they serve. It is a source of
tremendous pride for us and the entire cooperative.”
The scholarship program is open to all graduating high school seniors that receive local telecommunications service from NEMR
Telecom. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited two-year or
four-year college or university, or vocational technical school, and
have at least a C-grade point average.

Two Local High School Students Chosen

Cabbage Salad
with Bacon
Yield: Serves 6 to 8
Ingredients:
8 to 10 slices bacon, cooked, drained, diced
4 cups chopped or shredded cabbage, about 1/2 medium head
or a small head
4 to 6 green onions, thinly sliced
1/4 teaspoon celery seeds
1/3 cup mayonnaise
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 to 2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons apple cider or apple juice
1 to 2 tablespoons vinegar
salt and pepper, to taste
Preparation:
Toss the bacon, cabbage, green onion, and celery seeds
together in a bowl.
In a large cup or small bowl, whisk the mayonnaise, olive
oil, 1 tablespoon sugar, apple cider, and 1 tablespoon vinegar.
Add salt and pepper, to taste, along with more sugar and
vinegar, if desired. Add the dressing mixture to the cabbage
mixture; toss to combine. Cover and refrigerate until serving
time.
FCC Increases Federal Access Recovery Charge
The Federal Communications Commission oversees the operations of all local communications providers including NEMR
Telecom. The “Access Recovery Charge” (ARC) was recently
adopted by the FCC as part of their reforms to the intercarrier compensation regimes. This 766-2480 transitional recovery charge is intended to lessen the effect of reduced intercarrier revenues and facilitate continued investment in broadband.
According to the FCC, the scheduled increase for this year is
50 cents for all residential lines and $1.00 for all business lines.
The increase will take effect July 1, 2014.
